Descendants of John Oathoudt

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN8 OATHOUDT (ISAAC7 OOTHOUDT, ALEXANDER6, JOHANNES5, JAN4, JOHANNES JANSE3, JAN JANSE2, JAN1)1 was born March 7, 1824 in Dearborn County, Indiana1,2, and died December 22, 1916 in Hamilton Township, Jackson County, Indiana3. He married HULDAH HOLCOMB November 30, 1845 in Baptist Church, Sparta, Dearborn County, Indiana4,5, daughter of RUFUS HOLCOMBE and NANCY GLOYD. She was born July 14, 1826 in Moore's Hill, Dearborn County, Indiana6, and died June 4, 1908 in Hayden, Indiana7,8.

Notes for JOHN OATHOUDT:

After his marriage to Hulda, they moved to Portage, Wisconsin. They returned to Indiana after a few years. They reportedly left Wisconsin because they were afraid of the Indians.

John Oathout once owned large tracts of land in Wisconsin and Indiana and at one time 3,000 acres in Jackson County, Indiana. He had a reputation for benevolence, however he did not belong to a church or secret order.

He placed about nine organs in different churches in Jackson and Jennings County. (Newspaper clipping from Doris Schafstall.) On June 30, 1895, the following was in the newspaper: "We who constitute the members of the Pleasant Grove Sunday school do hereby extend our hearty thanks to Mr. and Mrs. John Oathout for the new organ they have purchased, delivered and presented to this Sabbath-school and church. For this generous act and donation we will ever have cause to remember them as true friends of Christianity."

On Thanksgiving day, 1905, John and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at their home in Surprise, Indiana.

Notes for JOHN OATHOUDT:

John was born in Dearborn Co., South Sparta community, Indiana and married Hulda in the Baptist Church. In 1851, he took his family and father Isaac's family back to Leeds, Wisconsin, near Portage, driving in wagons in a group. One day while Lydia and Lovinia were playing in the yard, the Indians came along on their yearly trip to Madison for rations from the government. They saw the two girls and thought "Vina" very pretty and wanted Mr. Oathoudt to trade papooses with them. This frightened them very much for they feared the Indians might come back and steal their baby. Thinking the climate did not agree with them, John moved back to Ripley-Dearborn Co. (county line) in 1859.

In 1860, they moved to Jennings Co., Indiana at Hardinburg (now Hayden). He went into the stave business in 1869. He bought and sold several acres of land. In May 1872 he purchased 2320 acres in Jackson Co. for $19,000.00 known as swamp land. This land was all timberland except the sand knoll back of where John built his home. (Evert now lives here). He had this land cleared and he traveled back and forth from his home in Jennings Co. every week to pay the men who were working for him. He came to Shieldstown on the train, then walked or rode horseback. It is this soil that was named "Oathout soil" in February, 1981. John also dropped the "d" in his name and is now pronounced Oath-out.

John's first three children were born in Dearborn Co., IN, four in Wisconsin, and three in Jennings Co. Hulda died June 4, 1908 as she went to feed chickens and gather eggs about 4:00 p. m., she suffered a severe stroke. When John died in December 1916 at age 92, the water was out and his coffin was placed on a horse drawn wagon, pulled through water to Acme Cemetery.

Six of John and Hulda's children died in infancy. From History of Dearborn Co. medical epidemics are as follows: 1833--cholera; 1838--Malarial fever; 1842-43---Erysipelas or black tongue; 1843--influenza; 1843-56--Scarlet fever; 1849-73--Cholera; 1836-56--milk sickness; 1832--Ohio River flood.

(Jennie Allman, Oathout Genealogy, 3/4/1982)

Notes for HULDAH HOLCOMB:

Hulda died in the morning at her home. She went out to feed the chickens at approximately. 4 A.M. According to the newspaper clipping: "after she did not return for several minutes someone went to look for her and found her lying unconscious from a severe stroke of paralysis. She never regained consciousness afterwards."

Notes for ANDREW MORTON OATHOUT:
Newspaper clipping:

"At the residence of Mr. Garner Paul, of Spencer Township, on Tuesday, October 10th, 1882, Mr. Morton Oathout to Miss Flora D. Allison.

The wedding was reported to be a very pleasant affair, with the exception of the serious sickness of the bride's brother, Mr. Frank Allison, who, with his new wife, had come from his home in Kansas to be present at his sister's wedding.

The bride is well known in Vernon, and no doubt there are many friends here who join with us in offering their congratulations and wishing Mr. and Mrs. Oathout a Long and prosperous wedded life.

Newspaper clipping:

"A purse containing bankable papers valued at more than $5,200 together with $10.30 in change, which Mrs. Leann Oathout missed while attending the Jackson county farmers fair here Thursday has been found. The purse, which evidently had been stolen and returned, was found in the tool box of the Oathout automobile which is located under the rear seat of the car.

Mrs. Oathout, with her husband, A. M. Oathout, and a Mrs. George who makes her home with them, were here attending the fair. Mrs. Oathout went to a fish stand in Shields park to get some sandwiches, and it is her belief that she left her purse laying on the counter. She discovered the loss a short time afterwards and returned to the stand by the purse was not there.

The matter was taken up with S. __ Vaughn, manager of the Chamber of Commerce who in turn called the police to investigate the case.

An investigation was started by T. Abell, chief of police and Officer Charles Wallace, and one person who was alleged to have been standing around the fish stand when Mrs. Oathout was there was called and questioned. However, the officers were unable to get much evidence that would throw a light on the case.

A thorough search was made of the Oathout automobile but the missing purse could not be located. Late Thursday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Oathout left for their home in Surprise neighborhood. Mr. and Mrs. Oathout did not mention the loss of the purse to the members of the family. But while eating supper a son stated that he was coming here today to attend the fair. Mrs. Oathout in return replied that she hoped he would not have the bad luck that she had here AND it was then that the son was informed of the missing pocketbook.

While repairing the automobile just before supper the son noticed a pocketbook in the tool box and he told his parents of seeing the purse. Mr. Oathout made an investigation and found the purse with all of the valuable papers in it and the $10.30.

Neither Mr. and Mrs. Oathout is able to explain how the purse came to be in the auto tool box. Mrs. Oathout is positive that she had pocketbook when she purchased the sandwiches and both are positive that it was not placed in the tool box of their car by one of them. The only explanation that is offered is that the pocketbook was stolen and returned by the thief who evidently feared..."

When Andrew moved to Jackson County, Indiana, they lived in a log house. They built a barn in 1888.

Notes for ANDREW MORTON OATHOUDT:

Andrew Morton was born in Jennings Co.; married Flora in Jennings Co. and lived on Six Mile Creek, where Walter & Ralph were born. In 1887 they moved to Jackson Co., built a log cabin and Laura was born there; built a barn in 1888 and by 1890 a house was built. Hazel, Frank, Roland, Dessie, and Everett were born there. Ralph's family grew up in this house and a daughter, Gertrude Melvin owns the house now. He was a Republican and belonged to the Surprise E. U. B. Methodist Church. He was called Mort.

The Acme Cemetery was started in 1901 on land owned by A. Morton Oathout as a family burial plot, first one to be buried was Nancy Holcomb (9/14/1830- 3/17/1901) a sister of Huldah, and Walter S. Allison's grave was moved from Hayden, IN. After Mort's death in 1928, EUB Methodist Church took over the cemetery. Later the township assumed responsibility.   (Jennie Allman)
