Research in response to requests for genealogical assistance is done by volunteers on a first-come, first-served basis and as quickly as possible. Persons making requests are asked to be patient. They may inquire about progress and are asked to include a self-addressed stamped envelope with the progress inquiry. Inquiries about progress also may be made by electronic mail. Progress reports usually are not available by phone.
The Research Committee of the Jackson County Genealogical Society Incorporated has established the following policy for research requests: A minimum fee of $10 for up to one hour of research on one surname must accompany each request from persons unable to travel to the JCGS library. A copy of this policy statement will be sent in response to queries received without the appropriate fee or received by electronic mail. Requests must be accompanied by checks or money orders payable to: Jackson County Genealogical Society. The JCGS cannot be responsible for cash included in correspondence and asks that correspondents NOT send cash.
Each request must indicate specific information being sought. Otherwise, the fee will be assumed to cover material selected at discretion of the volunteer researcher.
The request should be accompanied by pedigree and ancestral charts that organize the known information and indicate the needed information. The client is expected to keep a copy of the document requesting JCGS research.
The charts and requesting document become property of the Jackson County Genealogical Society Incorporated and will be placed in the JCGS library?s family file to allow other researchers to view the information and to contact submitters about relevant information.
The initial $10 fee will cover up to one hour of research, up to 10 photocopies of appropriate material of the researcher?s choice, and postage and materials to deliver the copies to the client via the U.S. Postal Service.
JCGS volunteer researchers may, at their discretion, conduct research in other appropriate local depositories such as government offices or libraries and in cemeteries and other localities. However, if the cost of such activity is expected to exceed the hourly fee, the client will be contacted in advance and given the opportunity to approve such fees. Additional fees are required for certified copies of documents (paid to the certifying agency) and for travel expenses within the county at the current rate established by the Internal Revenue Service. The costs will be documented by the researcher.
If additional materials are available in regard to a particular search, the library will be glad to provide a quote for supplying the additional materials. Costs will vary not only with the amount of material available but with the format, the required assembly, the complexity of duplication, and the materials and costs of shipping.
Those requesting photocopies of materials hereby are notified that copyright restrictions may apply to the materials and they are responsible for respecting copyright rules in any use they make of the material. The source of the material, if known, will be included with the material.
The library and its researchers reserve the right to refuse a copying request that in their judgment would violate copyright restrictions. If the library cannot supply copies of materials because of copyright restrictions, the client will be notified in a timely manner. Research and materials fee for that portion of the request may be waived at the discretion of the researcher.
The Jackson County Genealogical Society Incorporated makes no representations or warranties, express or implied, with respect to these documents, or any part thereof, including any warranties of title, non-infringement of copyright or patent rights of others, merchantability, or fitness or suitability for any purpose.
