County Gunner On Air Bomber Dies Overseas

Edwin W. Chastain, Formerly of Seymour, flying Fort Gunner, Killed in Europe

Edwin W. Chastain, formerly of Seymour, an aerial gunner on a Flying Fortress in the U.S. Army Air Corps who has been overseas for several months as a member of a bomber crew, was killed in action on the European war front in the Italian area on November 25, according to a message from the war department received late Friday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Chastain, and his wife, Mrs. Mildred Chastain, northeast of Crothersville on Crothersville R2.

Inducted Here In 1942.

Sgt Chastain, who was inducted into the armed forces here on May 14, 1942, was the thrid Jackson county young man to be listed as killed in action on the European front.

The only child of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Chastain, Sgt. Chastain was reared north of Seymour at Woodstock and spent his early life there and in this city. He was employed here for several years and was married to Miss Mildred Cline, daughter of G.C. Cline, now in the U.S. Navy Seabees, and the late Mrs. Cline. They lived for several months in California where Mr. Chastain was employed and following his induction, his wife and two sons, now age six and three years, returned to Jackson county for residence. His parents moved to Vernon township for residence from Woodstock several years ago.

News of Sgt. Chastain's death is a shock to his many friends and relatives in this vicinity.
