Pfc. A. Lewis Is Drowned at Daytona Beach

Son of Mr. and Mrs. David Lewis, Brothersville, Victim-No Details Learned

Word that their son, Pfc. Albert M. Lewis, age twenty-three, who was serving in Florida with the U.S. Army, was drowned last Saturday, October 2, was the tragic news received Thursday afternoon by Mr. and Mrs. David W. Lewis, well known Crothersville residents.

The message, which contained no details other than the fact that their son had drowned at Daytona Beach, Florida, was contained in a telegram received from army officers by the parents. They are wonderin whether the drowning occurred in the ocean and whether he was off duty or on maneuvers when the tragedy occurred. No explanation was given as to the delay in the notification of his death.

Funeral Not Set.

No funeral arrangements have been made pending further word from army authorities at Daytona where he was stationed under Capt. Maurice H. Mathews. The body was ordered by the parents to be shipped to Crothersville.

Pfc. Lewis was a member of Battery 224, AAA S.T. Bn. at Daytona. A graduate of the Crothersville High School with the class of 1941, Pfc. Lewis worked with his father in his lumber yard in Crothersville until he entered the armed forces on November 28, 1942.

The young man was born in Louisville on October 30, 1920, the son of David W. and Annice Benham Lewis, and moved with his parents to Crothersville when he was four years of age. He was a member of the Crothersville Methodist Church and was well known and highly respected in that community.

Besides the parents, he is survived by two brothers, John Lewis and Joseph Lewis, both at home.

Pfc. A.M. Lewis Rites Monday

Funeral services for Pfc. Albert M. Lewis, age twenty-three, who was serving in Florida with the U.S. Army when he was drowned on October 2, are tentatively set for 2 o'clock Monday afternoon from the Crothersville Methodist Church, of which he was a member. Burial in the Crothersville Cemetery.

The body is scheduled to arrive at Crothersville sometime Sunday or Sunday night.

Pfc. Lewis was on battery convoy in the ocean near Daytona Beach when he becare lost in the waves and washed overboard, according to information obtained by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David W. Lewis, of Crothersville, from army officials late Friday.
