Charles Baird Killed Staff Sergeant Charles Baird, age thirty-four, a former resident of Jackson county who had served in the U.S. Army for about fourteen years, was killed in action in France on September 30, according to a telegram from the war department received by his sister, Mrs. Balem Allman, of Columbus. His mother, Mrs. Mila Taylor, lives with another daughter, Mrs. Nolan Greathouse, Columbus R7. Was In Regular Army S/Sgt. Baird was serving with a tank battalion in France. He served in the regular army prior to the war and after Pearl Harbor, he reenlisted. He had been a test driver of tanks in Detroit in the Chrysler plant for a number of years for the army. While serving in France, he was attached to a tank battalion. S/Sgt. Baird was born in Boone county, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Baird, but moved to Jackson county with his parents in 1913. They resided in the Pleasant Grove community. A brother, Capt. Earl F. Baird, is serving with the army in the South Pacific area. A brother, Joseph Baird, lives in Seymour and a brother, William Baird, lives at Acme in Jackson county. Two other brothers, Arthur Baird of Indianapolis, and Roy Baird and three sisters, Mrs. Allman, Mrs. Loal Thompson, of Williamsport and Mrs. Blanche Spicher, Warsaw R1, survive.
