Mildred Pauline Albert Coates, 89, of Brownstown and formerly of Madison, died at 4:09 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown.
Mrs. Coates joined the Madison Art Club in 1970, which promoted art and supported artists in the community. She created more than 200 paintings and her last major painting was in 1999 of Clifty Falls. She entered it into an exhibit of 59 paintings where she received an honorable mention; she thought that was pretty good for an old lady. She exhibited her work in a number of art shows, winning several awards. She has sold her paintings to private collectors in Canada, England, Virginia, Indiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin. In the 1970s she joined Internationally Yours, a women's club that was started in World War II to promote peace and international relationships in all nations. It was a very interesting and rewarding experience and at one time 21 countries were represented. Her religious preference was God's Word's.
Born June 22, 1917, in Montgomery County, Ohio, she was a daughter of Elkanah Albert and Virginia Ethel Mt. Castle Albert, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Kenneth William Coates, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include four daughters, Esther Bryan, Indianapolis, Judith Lewis, Seymour, Nancy Yheulon, North Vernon, and Cecilia Mellencamp, Brownstown; a son, Floyd Coates, Lexington; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilmer Albert, Lebanon; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
The Rev. Mark Wooten will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. today at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison. Burial will take place at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Madison.
