Don Dixon

Don Dixon, 70, Madison, formerly of Vevay, died at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2006, at Jewish Hospital, Louisville, Ky.
Mr. Dixon was raised in Switzerland County near Lamb, and was a 1954 graduate of Vevay High School. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of corporal and was honorably discharged after three years of service. He retired after 15 years of service as a reserve deputy for the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department and the Vevay Town Police for 23 years.
Don was an avid hunter, fisherman and supporter of the NRA. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, especially driver Jeff Gordon, and IU basketball. He had been very active in his community and had served as treasurer of the Democrat Party and as precinct committeeman and had served on the advisory board. He also had served on the Switzerland County Senior Housing Board (Switzer Square) and was an avid member of the National Rifle Association. He was a member and very active in the CAM Car Club in Madison and was a member of the former Moorefield Church of Christ and attended First Christian Church, Hanover.
Born May 4, 1936, in Switzerland County, he was a son of Kirby Van and Lauren Bell Osborne Dixon, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Barbara King Walters Dixon, who survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Cindy (Bob) Quick, Madison, Chris (Tony) Bilz, Madison; one son, Tim (Blanch) Dixon, Madison; one step-daughter, Catherine (Barry) Walsh, Colorado Springs, Colo.; one step-son, Robert Dale Walters, Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight sisters, Madeline Walters, Danville, Ky., Army Luish, Louisville, Ky., Lettie Wilson, Madison, Etta Royce and Vonna Haines, both of North Vernon, Joyce Meredith, Mammoth Cave, Ky., Carolyn Altpeter, Seymour, Evelyn Rose, Vevay; three brothers, Harold Dixon, Madison, Gerald Dixon, Milton, Ky., Dale Dixon, Vevay and Keith Dixon, Kent; five grandchildren, Tracy Quick, Terrina, Logan and Callum Dixon, Claire Bilz, and Kyle Brandon Graham; one great-granddaughter, Paige Morris; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Johnson Dixon, on Jan. 8, 1998; three sisters, Betty Sue Sturtzel, Clara Marie Dixon, Laura Marie Dixon and infant sister; four brothers, Gail William Dixon, Mickey Wayne Dixon, Hubert Dixon and Kirby Wayne Dixon.
Brother Roy Duckworth and Brother James Sparks will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, Vevay. Burial will take place at Brooksburg Cemetery.
Full military honors will be conducted at the graveside by Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Vevay VFW Post 5396, Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department and Vevay Town Police will conduct an honor guard service at the funeral home Tuesday evening.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to Switzerland County Emergency Unit Endowment or Switzerland County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
