Seymour Daily Tribune Jim Griffin October 20, 2006 April 8, 1944 - Oct. 18, 2006 Jim Griffin, 62, Columbus, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at Veterans Administration Hospital, Indianapolis. Mr. Griffin was the Bartholomew County Veterans Service Officer and owned Jim Griffin Inc. as an exclusive agent for Allstate. He was a member of 40 et 8 Voyager 1274 where he was the correspondante, VFW Post 1987, American Legion Post 24 where he had been the Commander, AMVETS, Sons of American Legion Squadron 24, District Vice Commander for the American Legion. He was involved with the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard, volunteer for the Celebration 95 weekend in 1995, a major fund raiser for the Bartholomew County Memorial for Veterans, a key volunteer for the Welcome Home parade, co-chairman for the annual Honoring Veterans Banquet where he had won the Patriot award. He was involved with the annual Veterans Day ceremony, served on the planning committee for the annual Veterans Day parade this year and the annual Salute Concert where he donated flags to the attendees with funds from his own pocket, was the spearhead for the establishment of the Dennis Chomel headstone placement on the POW-MIA plaza and assisted with installation and as a speaker for the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall Experience in 2002. He graduated from Freetown High School in 1962. He served in the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Born April 8, 1944, in Lincoln County, Ky., he was a son of Lawrence and Christine McKain Griffin, both of whom preceded him in death. On May 15, 1987, he married Kathy Ira Griffin, who survives. Other survivors include step daughters, Jill (Jeff) Drury, Columbus, Brian (LeAnn) Sweeney, and Bradley Sweeney, Brownstown; three grandchildren, Afton Axsiom, Columbus, Brittany Sweeney and Levi Sweeney, Brownstown; one brother, Jack (Sharon) Griffin, Kurtz; sisters, Connie (Joel) Updike, Kendallville, Andrea (Hal) Dickson, Muncie and Carolyn (Wayne) Bryant, Medora and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerrie Griffin. The Rev. Richard Yeaton will conduct a graveside memorial service at noon Monday with military honors by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Cremation with Inurnment will be at Freetown Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Myers~Reed Dignity Memorial Chapel, 3729 25th St., Columbus. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hoosier Boys State or the 40 et 8 Nurses Training Program.
