Seymour Daily Tribune Eugene F. Helmerich November 8, 2006 Oct. 20, 1928 - Nov. 6, 2006 Eugene F. "Gene" Helmerich, 78, North Vernon, died at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at Silver Oaks Health Campus, Columbus. Mr. Helmerich was a 1947 graduate of Huntingburg High School and a 1957 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, and received a master's degree from Indiana State University. He had been a teacher at Jennings County High School, retiring in 1988 after 23 years, and prior to that taught at Scott County Schools for nine years. He was a self-employed general contractor with Helmerich & Salyers Contracting. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with the military police in Italy during the Korean War, and was a corporal at the time of his discharge. He was a member of the National American Legion and a former member of the Jennings County School Board and Jennings County Area Planning Commission. He enjoyed fishing, tinkering, woodworking and spending time with his grandsons. Born Oct. 20, 1928, in Pike County, he was a son of Ed and Lillie Collins Helmerich, both of whom preceded him in death. On July 25, 1953, in Huntingburg, he married Wanda June McGillem, who survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Sandra Hunt, North Vernon, and Sharon Blackerby, Columbus; a sister, Helen Lehmkuhler, Huntingburg; and four grandsons, Corbin Blackerby, Bloomington, Caleb Blackerby, Columbus, and Sam and Brad Hunt, both of North Vernon. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert Studer and Charles, Gerald, Dale and Wayne Helmerich, and two sisters, Fern Blemker and Mary Hoffhaus. The Rev. Richard L. Burcham will conduct funeral services at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home, North Vernon. Burial will take place at Vernon Cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by North Vernon Veterans of Foreign Wars Matt Hester Post 2021. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Helmerich Grandchildren Education Fund.
