Horning, 80, retired timber buyer and a life-long resident of Jackson County, died at his home on Seymour R4 this morning. He had been ill for the past three years. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Voss Mortuary with the Rev. C.D. Patterson, pastor of the Trinity Methodist Church, in charge. Interment in mausoleum in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call at the Voss Mortuary after noon Thursday. Mr. Horning was born September 28, 1868, at Rockford, the son of the late John and Florence Smith Horning. He was married August 14, 1887, in Seymour to Minnie Weathers, who preceded him in death. For 44 years Mr. Horning was a timber buyer throughout this section of the state and became widely known and well liked. In 1894 he became a timber buyer for the D'Huer-Swain Lumber Company, which later became the Swain-Roach Lumber Company, and continued in that capacity until he retired nearly 45 years later, in 1938. He was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church. A host of friends throughout this vicinity mourn his death. He is survived by seven children, Mrs. Mattie Doane, of Cincinnati; Charles W. Horning, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Lula Breitfield, of Indianapolis; Harry K. Horning, of Seymour; L.W. Horning, of New York City; Robert D. Horning, of Indianapolis and Mrs. Marie Bodine, of Huntington, West Va. Several half-brothers also survive. One brother preceded him in death. Twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.
