Seymour Daily Tribune March 25, 2002 Hershel Samuel Houk Sr. Hershel Samuel Houk Sr., 79, North Vernon, died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital, North Vernon. Mr. Houk was employed at Lau Blower in Lebanon, retiring as office manager in 1985. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in China. He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He enjoyed painting, fishing, bowling and watching sports. Born June 16, 1922, at Vincennes, he was a son of Jesse James Houk and Maudie May Elkins Houk. On Nov. 19, 1939, in Vincennes, he married Elsie Merle Grider, who preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Hershel Samuel Houk Jr., North Vernon; two grandsons, Todd S. Houk, Greensburg, and Craig A. Houk, Brownsburg; four granddaughters, Michelle K. Adams, Greensburg, Becky Ann Rouze, Phoenix, Ariz., Tracy Ann Martin, Hanna City, Ill., and Krissy Ann Swanson, Plantation, Fla.; a half brother, William Gene Hood, Rockford, Ill.; a half sister, Mildred Virginia Ellis, Cleveland, Tenn.; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joy Crowe; a great-grandchild, Joshua Martin; two brothers, James Edward Houk and Howard Gerald Houk; and two sisters, Rachel Gretchen Boyer and Lucy Erma Nash. Visitation and services were conducted Thursday at Dove-Sharp and Rudicel Funeral Home, North Vernon.
