Seymour Tribune - August 25, 2009 Melvin Lester Kauffman Melvin Lester Kauffman, 91, Rye, Texas, formerly of Seymour, died at 8:52 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, in the comfort of his home. At the time of his death, he was in the caring hands of his second cousin, Kathy Ardoin, and her friend, Kenneth Parker. Mr. Kauffman was a professional boxer for 10 years and was known as "The Seymour Kid" at Carnegie Hall. In his 10th year he was defeated by an opponent who knocked out a front tooth at which time he decided to end his boxing career. The tooth was replaced by a gold one that matched his sparkling personality and genuine heart. That same year, 1951, he moved to Houston, Texas, and began working for Brown and Root Construction, where he remained for 46 years. He was married to Elsie Lee Collins on Jan. 6, 1960. Survivors include his brother, Ray Alfred Kauffman; his sister, Ruth Ann Weinhorst;?and nieces, Elsie Marie Kennedy and Marcella Ann Kennedy. He is survived by others, including Ann Marsh, Livingston, Texas, Nancy Carolyn Brumsfield, Janice Goldsmith and Kathryn Ardoin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, and an adopted son, Michael Wayne Sizemore. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blue Water Cemetery, Livingston, Texas. Family visitation will be held at 5 p.m. today. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston.
