Seymour Daily Tribune Dr. Marvin F. Klaes 1October 14, 2006 April 4, 1923 - October 13, 2006 Dr. Marvin F. Klaes, 83, Seymour, died at 5:14 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was born April 4, 1923 in Clinton, Iowa, to the Charles L. and Julia Rutledge Klaes. He married Mary E. Vance on Aug. 16, 1946, and she died March 4, 2001. He married Lena Couch-Hawn on Nov. 6, 2004, in Seymour. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Seymour. He was a past Grand Knight, past District Deputy, and past Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus. He was an elected delegate to a K of C Supreme Council National Convention and a member of the Seymour Elks Lodge and the American Legion. He served in the Army during World War II in England and Japan. Dr. Klaes was a 1948 graduate of the Palmer College of Chiropractic and practiced in Seymour until his retirement in 1989. Dr. Klaes was past president of the Indiana Bureau of Chiropractic, past president of the Indiana Chiropractic Association and was named Chiropractor of the Year in 1973. Dr. Klaes also was a past president of the International Chiropractic Association of Indiana. He served as the Indiana representative to the International Chiropractic Association, was elected two terms as chairman of the assembly and elected to two terms as a member of I.C.A.'s Board of Control. A Fellow of I.C.A., he was a recipient of I.C.A.'s Meritorious Award. A Fellow of the Palmer Academy of Chiropractic, he was the recipient of the D.D. Palmer Scientific Award and Palmer College's most prestigious award, Doctor of Humanities. He was an original member of the teaching staff of the Gonstead Clinic of Mount Horeb, Wis. Dr. Klaes opened practice in Seymour in 1957 and built the current Klaes Chiropractic Clinic in 1974. The practice continues under the direction of Dr. Chris Klaes and Dr. Marian Klaes-Lanham. Dr. Klaes was elected and sworn in as an Indiana state senator in 1972, only to lose the Senate seat in a heavily disputed recount procedure. A multi-engine instrument rated private pilot, Dr. Klaes was also a 40-year licensed Extra Class Amateur Radio Operator. He was a past president of the Amateur Radio Chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association and was elected a national director for FMCA. He had visited all contiguous U.S. states in a motor home and also had toured Alaska, Hawaii and Mexico. He is survived by his wife, Lena; four daughters: Kathy [Ned] Clark of Dayton, Ohio, Julie [Joe] Bradley, Brownstown, Dr. Marian [George] Klaes-Lanham, Seymour, and Patricia [Phil] Hurley, Indianapolis; three sons: Dr. Chris [Dianne] Klaes, Brownstown, Bill [Julie] Klaes, Seymour, and Don Klaes, Seymour; 12 grandchildren: Andy [Mandy] Clark, Jennifer Clark, Matt Bradley, Ben Bradley, Barrett [Julie] Spray, Suzanne [Ron] Spray-Kuntz, Katie Klaes, Carly Klaes, Mackenzie Klaes, Mia Klaes, Brianna Hurley, Logan Hurley; five great-grandchildren: Taylor Spray, A.J. Spray, Gabriel Spray, Conrad Kuntz, Stella Kuntz and Jacob Collier; two stepgrandchildren: Rae Winters and Ali Winters; and a stepsister: Berniece Witt. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Mary, one daughter, Stella Klaes-Spray, and a brother, Charles Klaes. A funeral mass will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Father Todd Goodson officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Voss Chapel. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Memorial checks may be given to the Klaes St. Ambrose Educational Fund.
