Seymour Daily Tribune Laura I. Ray Kovener Nov. 4, 1912 – June 4, 2006 Laura I. Ray Kovener, 93, died at 9:40 a.m., Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Covered Bridge Health Campus, Seymour, after several years of declining health. Mrs. Kovener was a retired teacher, having taught four years in the old Uniontown School. She also taught at Vernon Township Jackson County, and Scottsburg Hyland Street School, retiring from teaching at Finley School in Scott County. She loved teaching phonics and second-graders. Her other great loves were her family, her church, playing the piano and her flowers. She was a member of Scottsburg Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than 50 years and served for several years as the church pianist and Sabbath school teacher. After graduating as valedictorian of her class at Crothersville High School, she attended Central Normal Teachers College in Danville. Later she attended Indiana University Southeast and Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich. Born Nov. 4, 1912, in Vernon Township, she was the daughter of Edward Right Ray and Mollie Gillespie Ray. She was their fourth and last child. Edward died in 1930, Mollie in 1952. Her eldest brother, Crafton, died from Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 17, May 3, 1915. An infant brother, James, died Sept. 11, 1902, and Harley died June 6, 1992. On May 26, 1935, she married Ray Frederick Kovener, who died Sept. 11, 1985. Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Russell, Madison, Wis., and Brenda (Earl) Voss, Seymour; 18 grandchildren, Raymond (Jan) Russell, Minneapolis, James (Marion) Russell, Albany, Calif., Matthew (Svetlana) Russell, Madison, Wis., Laura (Kenton) Ross, Poplarville, Miss., Stephen Voss, Louisville, Andrew (Lynn) Voss, Denver, Sarah Voss, Indianapolis, Rachael Voss, Minneapolis, Mollie Voss, Columbus, and Caleb, Joshua, Jonathan, Benjamin, Margaret, Elizabeth, Samuel, Jacob and Abigail Voss, all of Seymour; and eight great-grandchildren, Corinne and Peter Russell, California, David Wagner Russell, Minn., John Paul Russell, Madison, Wis., and Gwynneth, Ethan, Gareth and Seth Ross, of Mississippi. David Wright, pastor, will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Adams Funeral Home, Crothersville, with burial to follow at Crothersville Cemetery.
