Seymour Tribune - May 30, 2007 Elijah K. Manookian Jan. 16, 1923 – May 29, 2007 Elijah K. “Pete” Manookian, 84, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Scott Memorial Hospital, Scottsburg. He had been a resident of Hickory Creek Nursing Home for two and a half years and before living there he had moved from Orlando, Fla., where he had lived until moving to Crothersville in 1999 to be close to his daughter. Mr. Manookian retired from the United States Postal Service in 1982 as a letter carrier after 26 years of service and served as a chaplain of his union, which was the National Association of Letter Carriers. He helped build a church in Orlando, where he served as the Sunday school superintendent, and after retiring he drove the bus for the senior citizens group. Serving in the United States Navy, enlisting Aug. 31, 1942, he attended aviation mechanic’s school. During his service he was blown off an aircraft carrier and was able to rescue a fellow seaman who didn’t know how to swim and was honorably discharged Dec. 15, 1945, with the rank of seaman first class, V-2 USNR. He was a member of Cornerstone Community Church in Seymour. Born Jan. 16, 1923, in Orlando, Fla., he was the son of Krikor E. and Rosa Mae Coker Manookian, both of whom preceded him in death. On March 17, 1946, he married Lorena B. Bradshaw, who survives in Scottsburg. Other survivors include a daughter, Nancy (Tony) Rypma, Crothersville, and two grandsons, Nathaniel D. and Daniel A. Rypma, both of Crothersville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Manookian., Seymour. Burial will take place at Crothersville Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home in Crothersville and from 10 a.m. until time of service Friday at the church.
