Seymour Daily Tribune April 8, 2002 Lucy M. Matern Lucy M. Matern, 80, North Vernon, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Matern graduated from Vernon High School in 1939 and was retired from Muscatatuck State Developmental Center. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, North Vernon, Daughters of Isabella and St. Mary’s Rosary Society. She resided in North Vernon for 80 years. Born Sept. 9, 1921 in Lovett Township, she was a daughter of William Hupp and Luvinne Shepherd, who both preceded her in death. In October 1939, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, she married George Matern and he preceded her in death Jan. 17, 1991. She is survived by six daughters, Theresa Lane, Betty Lane, and Barbara Biehle, all of North Vernon, Leona Schoettmer, Greensburg, Louise Schlatterer, Seymour, and Carol Collins, Adams; three sons, Jerry Matern, Jim Matern and Tom Matern, all of North Vernon; 32 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Pauline Greer; two brothers and two sisters. The Rev. Herman Lutz will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Vernon. Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Vance-Fisher-Sawyer Funeral Chapel, North Vernon. There will be a rosary service at 8 p.m. today, also at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent DePaul, St. Mary’s Project Share or Hospice of Jennings County.
