Seymour Tribune - August 29, 2007 Dr. Loren W. Noblitt Dr. Loren W. Noblitt, 85, retired educator, scholar and local historian, died Aug. 27, 2007, in Stamford, Conn. Dr. Noblitt was a long-time member of St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brownstown. He was active in congregational affairs. He completed more than 50 years in the Bible class ministry. He was the author of a score of textbooks, dozens of educational articles and hundreds of public school laws and policies. He was the recipient of national, state and local honors. His biography was included in the California “Who’s Who” in 1962. He was an active member of the Jackson County Historical Society and the Sons of the American Revolution and author of many local history books. Dr. Noblitt was a classroom teacher of the elementary, secondary and college levels. He retired as Superintendent of the Visalia, California School District. Ill health prompted his retirement in 1982 and he and his wife moved to Brownstown for their golden years. Dr. Noblitt received his elementary instruction in Indianapolis, entered Shortridge High School but transferred to Western Military Academy and later to Morgan Prep School. He returned home to graduate from Columbus High School in 1940. He enlisted in the Army Airborne Command and survived nine campaigns in Africa, the Middle East and the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Fifty-eight years after the fact, he was awarded a plaque honoring him for his participation in D-Day. He was an active member of the American Legion and VFW. Upon his discharge in 1945, he received degrees from Indiana Central College, Butler University and the University of Southern California. Born May 8, 1922, he was the oldest son of the Rev. Loren S. and Minnie Walls Noblitt, of Columbus, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Kathryn C. Kamman, on Jan. 22, 1949, who survives, and they became parents of three children, Carolyn, Sandy (Robert) McKinney, both of California, and Kathy (Tom) Collins, Connecticut. Survivors include daughters, Sandy and Kathy, and by his children from an earlier marriage, Kay (Charles) Richards, Larry Noblitt and Elaine (John) McIntyre, Columbus; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Noblitt. The Rev. Ross O’Dell will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Monday at Zabel Funeral Home, Brownstown. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown, with graveside military rites. Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
