Seymour Daily Tribune John N. Owens July 25, 2006 Former Adjutant General of Indiana, John N. Owens, Major General, AUS (retired) died Saturday, July 22, 2006, at his residence. Mr. Owens attended school in Salem. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and graduated from OCS in July 1944 as a Second Lieutenant. He served with the U.S. Seventh Army in Europe during World War II. In 1949, he joined the Indiana National Guard's 38th Infantry Division as a captain. Attending various service schools, he advanced in rank and commanded many units within the 38th Infantry Division. Governor Edgar Whitcomb appointed him Adjutant General in 1969. In 1972, he re-entered active duty with the U.S. Army, being attached to the National Guard Bureau and detailed to Indiana as the United States Property and Fiscal Officer for Indiana, with offices at Stout Field. He retired in May 1980 with the rank of Major General. His many decorations included the U.S. Army Legion of Merit Medal and the U.S. Army Commendation Medal. General Owens was a member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, The Association of the U.S. Army, Retired Officers Association, National Guard Associations of the U.S. and Indiana, Rotary Club and many others. Born April 18, 1920, in Louisville, Ky., he was a son of Arthur Robert Owens and Elva Estella (Tatlock) Owens. He married Betty M. Cook, Dec. 31, 1940. She preceded him in death. They had been married 65 years. Survivors include three daughters, Dana Jo (Thomas) Bollinger, Seymour, Donna Lee Wyatt, Bloomington and Cindy Lu Owens, Sarasota, Fla.; five grandchildren, Amy L. (Danny) Bollinger Rupp, R. Todd (Kandi) Bollinger, Lindsey Bollinger (Matt) O'Haver, Emilee A. Wyatt, and Lukas W. Wyatt; five great-grandchildren with one on the way, and one sister, Martha Jean Owens (Edmond) Morris, Anderson. He was also preceded in death by one son-in-law, Thomas Wyatt. Dr. Eugene Gladney and Chaplain Hult will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday at Voss & Sons Funeral Service, Seymour. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour with full military honors by the Indiana National Guard Ceremonial Unit. Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Schneck Medical Cancer Center, Seymour, or the Indiana National Guard Family Support Program.
