Seymour Daily Tribune november 24, 2006 Norma Jean Vorwald Schuette May 27, 1922 - Nov. 25, 2006 Norma Jean Vorwald Schuette, 84, Columbus, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at her residence. Mrs. Schuette was the last remaining descendent with the Vorwald name in Columbus, a pioneer family in Bartholomew County. In 1872 her grandparents started the Vorwald Grocery, which was located at the northeast corner of Third and Jackson streets and was torn down to make room for The Commons Mall. In April of 1946, she and her husband started a self-service laundry in Columbus, which was the first self-service laundry east of the Mississippi River. She was a graduate of St. Peter's Lutheran School and a graduate of Columbus High School in 1940. Mrs. Schuette was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha and St. Peter's Couples Club. She worked as secretary of St. Peter's Lutheran Church for more than 22 years. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed working with her flowers, as well as cooking, swimming, boating and all water activities at their home on Lutheran Lake. Born May 27, 1922, she was the daughter of Carl and Ida Meyer Vorwald, both of whom preceded her in death. On Dec. 27, 1942, she married Louis Schuette, who survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Schuette, Milwaukee; two sons, Donald (Marcia) Schuette, Green Pond, S.C.; and Roger (Julie) Schuette, Columbus; a daughter, Dianne Shepherd, Columbus; eight grandchildren, Shannon Schuette, Tim Schuette, Tony Schuette, Rodney Schuette, Damian Shepherd, Chad Schuette, Joshua Shepherd and Scott Schuette; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Paul Vorwald, and a great-granddaughter, Anna Mae Schuette. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Columbus. Burial will take place at Garland Brook Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, Columbus, and from 9 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Peter's Lutheran Church "Together We Grow" fund or Camp Lakeview Foundation.
