Seymour Daily Tribune January 18, 2002 James Shafer Jr. James Shafer Jr., 76, Reddington, died at 5:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at his home. Mr. Shafer was the former owner/operator of James Shafer Trucking. He also had owned James Shafer Construction since 1969, building spec homes. He was a World War II United States Navy veteran and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1987, both of Columbus. He also was a member of Brown County Methodist Church. Born June 28, 1925, in Brown County, he was a son of James F. and Alice Hendershot Shafer. On May 20, 1948, in Nashville, Ind., he married Mary Jane Barker, who died Nov. 10, 1980. On Sept. 5, 1987, in Reddington, he married Wanda Ashcraft Davers, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Kenny Paul and Mike Shafer, both of Columbus; a daughter, Jennifer Shafer, Columbus; a stepson, Glenn Davers, Washington, Ind.; five sisters, Mary Perry and Hilda Lee, both of Columbus, June Carver and Hesper Louise Shafer, both of Ogden, Utah, and Alice “Libby” Neaman, Houston, Texas; a brother, Robert Shafer, Reddington; and five grandchildren, Gary and Matt Shafer, both of Columbus, Stacy Carmichael, Spencer, Kimberly Moffatt, Denver, and Janea’ Davers, Washington, Ind. Two brothers, Floyd and Ira Shafer, preceded him in death. The Rev. Hurschell Joslin will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Myers Funeral Service, Reed and Jewell Chapel, Columbus. Burial will be in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Jennings County.
