Seymour Tribune Arthur N. Shirley 1928 - 2008 Arthur N. Shirley, 79, Indianapolis, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008. Mr. Shirley was an alumnus of School 66 and 84, Shortridge High School Class of 1946 and had attended Indiana University, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a graduate of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard. He worked as a funeral director for Shirley Brothers Mortuaries and Crematory for over 45 years, retiring as president in 1995. He was involved in the Jaycees, Sahara Grotto, Masonic Lodge 500, and the Optimist Club of Indianapolis. He loved reminiscing about old times and cherished his friends and family. He was an avid bird watcher, talented artist and woodworker, loved to fish and couldn't pass up an opportunity to play a practical joke. Born in Indianapolis on Dec. 3, 1928, he was the son of Gladys L. Sudbrock and Walter L. Shirley, both of whom preceded him in death. He was married to Marilyn L. Mansil Shirley for 33 years and she preceded him in death in 1989. Survivors include children, Frederick N. Shirley, Mary L. Wiethoff, Sarah J. (Michael) Chasnoff, Ann L. (Chris) Helft, Janet L. (Dr. Paul Flaspohler) Shirley, and James A. (Cami) Shirley; grandchildren, Trevor and Claire Shirley, Ross, Parker and Cameron Wiethoff, Jack, Sam and Sophie Chasnoff, Camille, Quinn and Milo Flaspohler, and Bela and Iris Shirley, and a brother, David A. (Janet) Shirley. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Sheridan and brothers, Walter L. Jr. and Philip Shirley. A memorial service was held Sept. 22 at Shirley Brothers Castleton Chapel, Fishers.
