Seymour Daily Tribune January 12, 2002 Ray Spurgeon Ray Spurgeon, 81, of Madison and formerly of Jackson County, died at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at his home. Mr. Spurgeon was reared in Jackson County and attended school here. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, entering service Jan. 12, 1942. He served in the 124th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gunnery Battalion and fought in the battles and campaigns of Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Rhineland, Southern France and Central Europe. He received the EAME (European-African-Middle Eastern) Theater Ribbon with eight Bronze Stars with Bronze Arrowheads and the Good Conduct Ribbon. After being honorably discharged Sept. 13, 1945, he returned home and moved to Jefferson County. He was employed for several years at Jefferson Proving Ground and the Charlestown Ammunition Plant. He was a farmer all his life and enjoyed being a grandparent and visiting with friends. He was a member of Caledonia Presbyterian Church near Moorefield. Born April 27, 1920, at Freetown, he was a son of King Spurgeon and Emma Spurgeon. On June 23, 1947, at the Caledonia Parsonage in Moorefield, he married Leola M. Hall, who died Dec. 31, 2001. Survivors include a son, Tom Spurgeon and his wife, Wanda, Lexington; two granddaughters, Traci Harsin and her husband, Jon, and Carrie Leach and her husband, Jeremy, all of Hanover; two great-grandchildren, Kyla and Caleb Harsin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Earl Spurgeon; a great-granddaughter, Kelsie Nicole Harsin; seven brothers, Russell, Max, Ralph, Roy, Oagle, Quentin and Chester Spurgeon; and three sisters, Flossie, Josephine and Maud. The Rev. Bill Huber will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Sunday at Caledonia Presbyterian Church, Moorefield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Full military graveside rites will be conducted by the Vevay American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
