Seymour Tribune Harry E. "Gene" Winklepleck 1927 - 2008 Harry E. "Gene" Winklepleck, 81, Brownstown, passed away at 1:59 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Schneck Medical Center, Seymour, with his family at his side. Mr. Winklepleck retired as a lieutenant colonel after 33 years from the Army National Guard on May 18, 1980. He was a member of Brownstown United Methodist Church, Washington Lodge 13 Free and Accepted Masons, Murat Shrine, Scottish Rite Valley in Indianapolis, Jackson County Scottish Rite Club, Indiana Freemasons, Military Officer Association of America, National Guard Association of America and the National Association for Uniform Services. He was a lifelong resident of Jackson County. He attended Earlham College and went on to graduate from Canterbury College with a degree in education. He was a self-proclaimed "history buff," who enjoyed learning and talking about the history of the United States and more specifically, Jackson County. When he retired in 1980, he spent time as a substitute teacher for the Brownstown Central School Corporation. Harry was very involved with his family, his community and his church, and will be missed by all. Born in Freetown on Oct. 24, 1927, he was the son of Harry V. and Vernal Burroughs Winklepleck, both of whom preceded him in death. On Oct. 7, 1962, he married Mary Russell, who survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Joni (Kevin) Stringer, Austin; a son, Bruce Winklepleck, New Albany; six grandchildren, Lauren Winklepleck, Meghan, Brittany and Cassie Henderson, Abigail Franks and Braeden Winklepleck; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Joyce Eskew, Margaret Gauthey and Martha Richter, and one brother, Donald. The Rev. Michaelene Haysler will conduct funeral services at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brownstown United Methodist Church. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Winklepleck-Weesner Funeral Home, Brownstown, and from noon until time of service Saturday at the church. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
