Seymour Daily Tribune January 1, 2002 Vivian R. Winks Vivian Ruth Winks, 98, of Columbus and formerly of Brownstown, died at 3:14 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital. Mrs. Winks attended Indiana Business College, then attended Indianapolis Teacher College, known as Madam Blakers. The school became a part of Butler University, where she received her bachelor of science degree. She began her elementary teaching career at Mullen School near Freetown. She also taught at Griffith and Coatsville before returning to teaching at Brownstown. She retired from teaching in 1968. She was a lifetime member of Brownstown United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was an active member of the Methodist Women. She belonged to Jackson County Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the Study Club and Delta Kappa Gamma and had served on the Brownstown Library Board. In 1976, the Brownstown Business and Professional Women named her Woman of the Year. She enjoyed playing bridge. Born May 30, 1903, in Brownstown, she was the daughter of Thornton P. and Ethel Perry Heller. On April 12, 1937, she married Elwin T. Winks, who died July 28, 1950. Survivors include two sons, John Winks, Mooresville, and David Winks, St. Cloud, Fla.; two stepsons, E.T. Winks, Franklin, and Wendell Winks, Plainfield; a stepdaughter, Margaret Cotrim, Sao Paolo, Brazil; two sisters, Lena Heller and Bernice Kenny, both of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Olga Heller, Ravena, N.Y.; six grandchildren; 17 stepgrandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a nephew; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by two brothers, George Heller and John T. Heller; a stepdaughter, Nadine McGauey; and a grandson. The Rev. Jack Shake will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Thursday at Winklepleck-Weesner Funeral Home, Brownstown. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 1 p.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Brownstown United Methodist Church or donor’s choice of charities.
