Hearn Cemetery

The current listing is taken from the information on the
previous Jay Co Burials page, obituaries, tombstone photos,
and the Jay County Sesquicentennial Souvenir Booklet, 1836-1986.

Lena Morrical provided the following brief history of the cemetery in her article for the Souvenir Booklet:
The Hearn Cemetery is located about two miles west of Portland at the intersection of Highways 67 and 26 [in Wayne Township]. It was laid out on the John Hearn farm in 1839 soon after he was granted a land patent for the farm by the United States government. John and Nancy Elisebeth Morris Hearn had thirteen children. The first grave was opened in April, 1840 for Sallie Hearn Mason, their oldest daughter. Most of those buried in the cemetery are John and Nancy's descendants along with families with whom they intermarried.
Most birth dates are calculated from age at death.
