Funeral Rites Held For Harold Smilack

Funeral services for Harold Smilack, 52, of Portland, a brother of Mrs. Mary Brooks Gutowitz of Decatur, were held at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the Baird Funeral Home in Portland, Rabbi Fredric Doppelt officiating. Smilack died at the Jay County Hospital at 12:24 a.m. Saturday following a four-month illness.

Brooks Store here was closed this afternoon for the funeral services. He was a former employee of the store.

The son of Fred and Rosa Smilack, Harold Smilack was born May 21, 1909, in Dunkirk. He was married to Madge Mills, who survives. He had been associated with Abromsons, Inc., in Portland since 1951.

Other survivors include his father and sister, two brothers, Simon, Muncie, and Jay, of Dayton, O., and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Halfway Lodge No. 298 of Redkey, the Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne, American Legion Post of Portland, Portland Elks Lodge, PS and 4 Coin Club, and the Chef de Gare of 40 and 8. He was a veteran of World War II.

Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery at Redkey, with Masonic graveside services.
