CIVIL WAR
EIGHTY-SECOND REGIMENT INDIANA VOLUNTEERS
From the
Report of the Adjutant General
of the
State of Indiana, Volume III  1861 - 1865
by
W. H. H. Terrell, Printed in 1866

What I am doing here is taking information from this report and noting which counties in Indiana the men who served said they were from. The names of their towns were listed I am including the county like this - Town/County. Hopefully this will help some folks in locating places their ancestors lived or at least where they said they were from when they joined the Army. Also if the town name has changed and I know it, I am putting the other name like this Hardensburg (Hayden)/Jennings. With Jennings County names where I am familiar with the individual (from research) I will show spelling corrections on names in this color purple and in ( ). Some men in Company "G" just listed their residence as "Home" there was never an actual town or Post Office in Jefferson County by that name but in Milton Township the area around the Home Chapel Methodist Church was called "Home" by locals so I have listed them as Milton Twp. Jefferson Co.
Also keep in mind, when enlisting if they lived out in the country they could have given the nearest Post Office, or Town, which might not be in the County where they actually lived. An example is on this list Court Hawley who was a private in Co. B. he is listed on here as being from Elizabeth that one had me for a while, so I looked him up on the census he is listed in Spencer Township, Jennings County, the closest town that was anything like Elizabeth is Elizabethtown in Bartholomew County which borders Jennings County to the north & west.
All the usual warnings apply, this is a transcription of an original report, but spelling is always in question, and typo's are possible.  (Sheila).

The Eighty-Second Regiment was organized at Madison, and mustered into the service on the 30th of August 1862, with Morton C. Hunter as Colonel. On the 1st of September it left for Louisville, Kentucky, and upon its arrival there was employed in preparations to meet the expected invasion of Bragg's army, untill the 1st of October, when it was assigned to a brigade in Buell's army, and marched with the army through Kentucky in persuit of Bragg. Returning from that unsuccessful pursuit, it formed a portion of Rosecran's command, and was engaged in the battle of Stone River, on the 21st of December, 1862, and 1st and 2nd of January, 1863. It entered Murfreesboro with the victorious army of Rosecrans, and remained in camp there until the general forward movement of that army; when, on the 26th of June, it participated in the battle of Hoover's Gap, and the campaign that followed through Tennessee and Northern Georgia, and was engaged in the battle of Chicamauga on the 19th and 20th of September. During that terrible battle the Fourteenth Corps, to which the regiment was attached, withstood every assault of the enemy and at the close of the two days' fight, retired deliberately to Mission Ridge and Chattanooga, The Eighty-Second lost in this battle twenty-one killed, seventy-two wounded, and twenty-nine missing, being a total loss of one hundred and twenty-two. The regiment was next engaged in skirmishing in front of Chattanooga, during the siege of that place, and also in a spirited affair at Brown's Ferry. It took part in the storming of Mission Ridge, on the 25th of November, losing twenty-six men killed and wounded.
The Eighty-Second moved with the main army, early in May, 1864, upon the Atlanta campaign. On the 8th it took part in the assault at Buzzard's Roost, driving the enemy from that almost impregnable position, after a severe battle. Here the brave Lieutenant Colonel Slocum fell, mortally wounded. The regiment lost twenty-five killed and wounded at this battle. On the 13th, in the sanguinary struggle among the wild hills of Resacea, the Eighty-Second lost twenty-five in killed and wounded.  Then followed, in quick sucession, the battles of Dallas, Kingston, and Kenesaw Mountain, in all of which the regiment took part. In fact, the Eighty-Second was constantly engaged in skirmishing or battle from Resacea to the crossing of the Chattahoochie river, covering a period of nearly two months. On the 20th of July it took part in the battle of Peach Tree Creek, and on the 22 it was present at the terrible battle in front of Atlanta. The regiment was almost constantly on the front line during the siege of Atlanta.
On the 7th of August, while upon the skirmish line, the regiment became engaged in a sharp fight, and suffering a loss of twenty-six men in killed and wounded, out of one hundred and twenty five men engaged. On the 25th it moved with Sherman's army upon the southern communications of Atlanta, struck the West Point Railroad near Fairburn, aided in destroying that road, then moved to the Macon Railroad, near Jonesboro, and was engaged in the battle of Jonesboro, on the 1st of September, the Eighty-Second accompanied Sherman's triumphant army in its march back to Atlanta, where it remained in camp until the 2rd of October.
The rebel Gen. Hood having swung his army in Sherman's rear, and struck and destroyed his line of communications, upon the 3rd of October, Sherman, leaving the Twentieth Corps to hold Atlanta, moved in persuit. Hood's design was to destroy, and avoid a fight. And Sherman whose object was subsequently developed, slowly pursuing, drove the enemy as far north as necessary, and having followed Hood to near Gaylesville, Alabama, suddenly ceased pursuit, concentrated his corps, detatched the Fourth and Twenty-Third Corps to the command of General Thomas, left Hood, the obstinate, to the tender mercies of Thomas, the good; and gathering his veterans well in hand, Sherman, the indomitable, marched for the blue and sparkling waters of the sea.
The Eighty-Second accomplished these movements, and entered Savannah December 21st, 1864, in time to partake of a Christmas dinner. From thence, after a brief hault, it accompanied the army on its march through the Carolinas, was present at the battle of Bentonville, North Carolina, after which it passed on to Goldsboro. The regiment remained at that place for a brief period, and then moved to the Capital of North Carolina. While there, the intelligence of the surrender of General Lee's army was received, and soon after General Johnson made propositions for the surrender of the armies under his command. An armistice followed. Pending this armistice, the Eighty-Second remained in camp, and upon the final surrender of the rebel army under Johnson, it broke camp, and on the 30th of April, started on the homeward march. Leaving Raleigh, at that date, by rapid marches it reached Alexandria, on the Potomac, on the 19th of May, and was part of the column in the grand review at Washington, the Capital, on the 25th of May. The regiment was mustered out at Washington, on the 9th of June, 1865, and at once proceeded to Indiana.
The Eighty-Second left for the field with an aggregate of nine hundred and forty-seven. It returned with two hundred and eighty-nine men. Upon its arrival at Indianapolis it was, on the 15th of June, greeted with honors due to the returning braves, at a cheerful meeting in the State-House Grove, welcomed with addresses from Governor Morton, General Hovey and others, and its members soon left for their respective homes.

In the records below you will see V.R.C. here is what it stands for.

The Veteran Reserve Corps (originally the Invalid Corps) was a military reserve organization created within the Union Army during the American Civil War to allow partially disabled or otherwised infirmed soldiers (or former soldiers) to perform light duty, freeing able-bodied soldiers to serve on the front lines

The title "Veteran Reserve Corps" was substituted for that of "Invalid Corps" by General Order No. 111, dated March 18, 1864. The men serving in the Veteran Reserve Corps were organized into two battalions; the First Battalion including those whose disabilities were comparatively slight and who were still able to handle a musket and do some marching, also to perform guard or provost duty. The Second Battalion was made up of men whose disabilities were more serious, who had perhaps lost limbs or suffered some other grave injury. These latter were commonly employed as cooks, orderlies, nurses, or guards in public buildings.
