Application Pioneer Families, Kosciusko County Indiana
Basic Rules of Evidence

     Applicants must prove that ancestor(s) lived within Kosciusko County in
1850 or before and that they are a direct descendant of said person(s).
     All proof documents must, by themselves or in combinations with other
documents, actually state the fact to be proven. Implied evidence is not
acceptable as proof. The Kosciusko County Genealogical Society shall be the
final authority as to proofs. 

PROOF OF DESCENT:
1. If your ancestral name is the same as yours, you need only to prove descent.
2. If ancestral name is not the same as yours, marriage records can be used to
show relationship.
3. If you wish to join and someone has already proven part of your ancestral
line, for the common ancestor refer to P.F.K.C. No. ____ or P.F.K.C. II No. ___
and generation No. ___, and then prove the rest of your descent.
4. It is permissible to prove descent from more than one ancestor within the
same application. In such instance, and ancestral chart should be included to
show the inter-connections. Maiden name of maternal ancestor should be proven to
be included: however, to honor the women who bore more than their share to toil
and privations (i.e., the Civil War period), proof that she was of the area may
be based on proving a child was born there. (A father is not proved as being in
the area just because a child was born there.)

ACCEPTABLE PROOFS:  (COLLATERAL AND /OR UNACCEPTABLE PROOFS)
1. Primary or collateral, from courthouse or other Government records (Land
deeds, assessment or taxes), Church and school records, are considered beyond
doubt and are excellent proof. 
2. Secondary evidence, i.e. Census, newspaper clipping, Bible or family records
(submitted with copy of Title page and publication date). Old letters or records
can be accepted as proof for only the facts the writer would logically know, of
his own knowledge, and cannot be accepted as proof of facts the writer could
only have obtained by hearsay from older generations or other sources.
3. Copies of 1850 Census showing ancestor(s) should include proper I.D. No.
4. Obituaries are acceptable only as collateral evidence. Early county histories
(include source, publication date and page number) may be accepted as collateral
evidence along with primary records.
5. Oral, written or published family traditions are often wrong, and are not
considered acceptable proof. Printed or manuscript genealogies, genealogical
compilations or family group sheets are not considered acceptable proof unless
they are documented and proved in themselves.
6. Material authored by the applicant, or his family, cannot be considered as
proof.
