HISTORY AND TRANSCRIPTIONS FROM TOLLESTON CEMETERY, GARY INDIANA

NOTE: A second list is at the bottom of this page.
The Tolleston area of Gary is a district west of Grant Street and South of Ninth Avenue. It was names for George Tolle, who established a village here in 1857. First Settlers were of English, Irish, and French extraction but by 1860, a large group of German families supplanted the original settlers (up to 1906 the village was a German Lutheran town). Until 1868, Tolleston was in North Township. With the founding of Hammond in that year a new township, Calumet Township, was carved out of North Township and Tolleston was included in this new township. By 1872, there were eighty families in the village, the majority in the employ of the Michigan Central Railroad. Other means of Livelihood were the shipping of ice, sand, berries, fish and game. The village had a schoolhouse, a church (German Lutheran), Gibson Inn, Post office, a wood yard, a general store, and a railroad station. The abundance of game in the Tolleston district resulted in the building of a rather famous hunting lodge. In 1911, Tolleston was incorporated into the city of Gary. Today (1958) although the name is still used, the old village lines have disappeared. St. John's Lutheran Church was built in 1868 (Their records go back to 1863), and was the first such building in the Calumet region. The property was set aside when the village was laid out by Tolle.
The survey of this sadly neglected cemetery was made by Mrs. C.A. Huber and Mrs. J.M. Seabright of the Pottowattomi Chapter, DAR, Gary, Ind during the summer of 1958. Facing now toward Grant Street, a main aetery of travel, the cemetery is gradually disappearing because of lack of care, vandalism, and weather. Buried here is Maria Gibson who with her husband operated the Gibson Inn, a way stop for travelers in this area in the early days. *****Cindy's Note: This cemetery was visited in Aug 1992. I have LEMKE's and STANG's buried here. This only shows why reading of stones is so important, or preserving any old records. Here is the list of stones still standing in 1958:
