ST. PAUL EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN PARISH SCHOOL

8th Grade Graduates

While St. Paul’s church was being built it was considered advisable to have a proper place for instruction of the parish children in the religious and secular branches. A large and roomy basement was placed under the church and the spacious assembly hall was dedicated to the purposes of a schoolroom and the other parts as living rooms for the teacher. Mr. W. Hentze, the first teacher, began instructions in October 1876 with nearly 60 children in attendance. The school remained in the basement of the church when a separate school building was built between the church and parish house in 1892 at a cost of $7,600. The late 1800’s through 1913 saw 200+ children in attendance. In 1957 the original schoolhouse was replaced in 1957 with a new building behind the church. This was enlarged in 1992 to its current size. Early information from: Scharnberg, Prof. J. H., Golden Jubilee of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Michigan City, Indiana, 1876-1926. The first public commencement exercises began in 1922.
