Cadwell, Clifford - Michigan City News, June 05, 1901    Clifford, youngest son of Mervin Cadwell of LaPorte, was buried at Foster's cemetery Thursday night, he having died late that afternoon of black diphtheria. Mrs. Cadwell's death occurred only a few months ago, and now another son of the afflicted family is ill with a complication of diseases and is reported to be in dangerous condition. Mr. Cadwell has the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community here of which he formerly was an old resident.
   LaPorte Daily Herald, Friday, 31 May, 1901    Clifford Caldwell (sp), son of Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Caldwell (sp), died about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon of diphtheria, after an illness of four days. He was 9 years old. The burial took place at 6 o'clock at Foster's cemetery in Galena township, the funeral director, Austin Cutler, acting strictly according to the orders of the board of health. Ralph Caldwell (sp) came home from Valparaiso suffering from tonsillitis, according to the diagnosis of the attending physician, and he is still ill, but the brother's death was due to diphtheria. Several houses in the vicinity have been quarantined because the inmates have one way or another been exposed. This is the first death from diphtheria in the city of LaPorte for many years. There is no danger of an epidemic.

Cadwell, Edward S.   - The Acorn, Three Oaks, MI, March 25, 1904    Edward S. Cadwell died on Friday, March 18, 1904; funeral on Sunday, March 20 at 2 p.m. at his late home; sermon by Elder E.D. Daniels of LaPorte; singing by Miss Helen Poole and quartet from LaPorte; Cutler, undertaker; interment at Foster's cemetery. The deceased had been sick only a week. Mr. Cadwell was born in Madison Co., N.Y., in Oct. 1827; was married to Miss Leva Gridley in 1847, and he and his esteemable wife celebrated their golden wedding some time ago by a quiet family gathering. He was aged 76 years and 5 months. Mrs. Cadwell and three children - all grown - one daughter and two sons, are left to mourn their great loss.

   Edward S. Cadwell. Among the old settlers of LaPorte county known and honored because of their genuine worth is Edward S. Cadwell, who resides on section 21, Galena township. He was born in the village of Cazenovia, Madison county, New York, on the 7th of October, 1727. His father, Simon Cadwell, was a native of Connecticut, and the mother, who bore the maiden name of Maria Ormsbee, was likewise born in the Charter Oak state. The father died when his son Edward S. was but four years of age, and the mother passed away on the 6th of April, 1840, so that Edward S. Cadwell was left an orphan at the early age of twelve and a half years. He then went to live with an uncle, who, however, gave him in charge of a farmer, Fred Hitchcock, with whom he remained until twenty-one years of age. He had the opportunity of attending school through the winter months, while throughout the remainder of the year he assisted in farm work. On attaining his majority he was given one hundred dollars in money and two suits of clothing. He then began working for a surveyor who owned a farm, and in this service Mr. Cadwell remained as a farm hand for two months.
   On the 23rd of November, 1848, occurred the marriage of Edward S. Cadwell and Miss Leva Gridley, who was born in 1828 in Manlius, New York, a daughter of Samuel U. and Amanda (Barnes) Gridley. Mrs. Cadwell was reared in her native place and pursued her education in the common district schools. After their marriage the young couple located in Manlius, Mr. Cadwell renting a farm from Abigail E. Gridley for four years. He then removed to Van Buren county, New York, where he remained for one year, and in 1854 he came to the west, establishing his home in Galena township on the farm where he now resides. Almost fifty years have been passed won this place, and throughout the entire period he has devoted his attention to the tilling of the soil and the raising of stock. Within the boundaries of his place are comprised one hundred acres richly cultivated and well improved with modern equipments.
To Mr. and Mrs. Cadwell were born four children, of whom one died in infancy. The others are Elva M., now the wife of William Brown of Galena township, who follows farming there. Mervin M., who married Mary E. Leliter, who died February 10, 1901, and he resides in LaPorte; and Edward F., who married Clara S. Welling, and is contracting freight agent for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, making his home in Chicago.
In his political views Mr. Cadwell has been an earnest Republican since the organization of the party, and served as a trustee of Galena township for nine years. He was also assessor for five years and justice of the peace for six years, discharging his duties with fairness and impartiality so that he "won golden opinions from all sorts of people." He has taken an active interest in all that pertains to the welfare of the county and its permanent improvement, and whether in office or out of it he has been a progressive and faithful citizen. For forty-five years he had charge of the Foster cemetery. As a member of Galena lodge, No. 335, F. & A. M., he is well known to his Masonic brethren in this part of the county, and in his life exemplifies the beneficent spirit of the craft. A self-made man, he was left an orphan at the early age of twelve and a half years and has always earned his own living. His career has been one of unflagging industry, and he certainly has made a creditable and honorable record, one well worthy of emulation by all who would develop manly principles and at the same time win success through honorable efforts.

Cadwell, Harold   - Michigan City News Dispatch Feb. 02, 1994 Page 2 
  Harold "Jack" Cadwell, 76, Michigan City, died after a three month illness at 2:17 p.m. Monday ( Jan. 31, 1994) at Methodist Hospital, Merrillville. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Foster's Cemetery, LaPorte County. Friends may call from 3 to 9 a.m. Thursday and until the service Friday at the funeral home. A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday by the Moose Lodge 980. Mr. Cadwell was born April 30,1917, in Rolling Prairie, the son of Raymond and Marian Busch Cadwell. On Sept. 7,1946, in Rolling Prairie, he married Agnes Marie Neruda, who died Sept. 1,1991. He is survived by one son, James L. Cadwell, Michigan City; One daughter, Marian M. Simpson, Michigan City; six grandchildren, Carin, Colleen, Craig, and Charles Cadwell and Sandi and Dawn Simpson, all of Michigan City and one brother, Lyle Cadwell, Rolling Prairie. One brother and one sister preceded him in death. Mr. Cadwell had lived in the area all his life. He retired as a baker with 47 years of service at Continental Baking Co. Mr. Cadwell was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, St. Joseph Young Men's Society and Moose Lodge 980.

Cadwell, Marian (Bush)   - LaPorte Herald Argus May 23, 1964, p. 2 
  Funeral services for Mrs. Marian Bush Cadwell, 87, Route 2, New Carlisle, who died at 7:30 a.. yesterday at the White Tower Nursing home here after an illness of eight years, will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the H.C. Amen and Son Funeral home, New Carlisle. 
  The Rev. Malcolm McArthur will officiate and burial will be in the Foster cemetery near Rolling Prairie. Friends may call at the funeral home tonight and until time of services. 
  She was born Feb. 24, 1877 in Lockport, Ill., and had lived in the New Carlisle and Rolling Prairie areas most of her life. She was married Dec. 20, 1897 in Lockport to Raymond G. Cadwell, who died July 16, 1956. 
  Surviving are two sons, Lyle Cadwell, Rolling Prairie, and Harold Cadwell, Michigan City; one daughter, Mrs. Blanche Cox, Hobart, Ind.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One son, Ward Cadwell, New Carlisle, died Dec. 3, 1962.

Cadwell, Mary E. (Leliter) - LaPorte Daily Herald, Monday, 11 February 1901, page 1, col. 2
   After an illness of some seven weeks Mrs. M.E. Cadwell died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mary Leliter Cadwell was born Nov. 19, 1856, in Galena township, and on March 5, 1875, was united in marriage with M.E. Cadwell. Mr. and Mrs. Cadwell resided in Kankakee township until a year ago, when they moved to this city. The deceased leaves a husband, four sons, Ray and Ralph, who are married and live in Galena township and Valparaiso respectively, and Clyde and Clifford, who attended school in this city. She also leaves a mother, Mrs. Leliter of Kankakee township, a sister, Mrs. Jacob Ackerman of this city, and two brothers, M.E. Leliter, of this city and George Leliter of Kankakee township. Mrs. Cadwell had been a member of the Christian church for years past. The funeral services will be conducted a the house tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock by Rev. A.H. DeLong. The remains will be laid at rest in Foster's burying ground. Austin Cutler has charge.

Cadwell, Mervin - LaPorte Herald Argus, July 30 1946, page 2    Mervin Cadwell, 91, of Rolling Prairie, died at 1:30 this morning at the Fairview hospital after an illness of three months. He was born in Galena township, LaPorte county, on August 31, 1854. He retired from farming 18 years ago and moved to Rolling Prairie. In 1895 he was married to Mary Leliter, who died in 1900. He was married to Mae Branhall in 1908, who died some years ago.
   Surviving are two sons, Ray of Hudson Lake, and Ralph of Sullivan, Ind., six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Rolling Prairie Methodist church, with the Rev. George Hartz officiating. Burial will be in the Foster cemetery, Rolling Prairie. Friends may call tomorrow and until 1 o'clock on Thursday at the Amen funeral home in New Carlisle.

Cadwell, Raymond Guy   - LaPorte Herald Argus, July 17, 1956 
  Raymond Guy Cadwell, 78, of Hudson Lake, died at 7:45 last night at his home after a short illness. 
  He was born Sept. 3, 1877 in Galena township, LaPorte county and had lived in that area all his life. 
  Mr. Cadwell was married Dec. 20, 1897 in Lockport, Ill., to Marion Bush. He was a retired farmer. 
  Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Blanche Cox, Gary; three sons, Ward M., New Carlisle; Lyle E., Galena township, and Harold M., Michigan City; one brother, Ralph W., Sullivan, Ind.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 
  Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the H.C. Amen and Son Funeral home, New Carlisle. Burial will be in the Foster cemetery, Galena township. Friends may call at the H.C. Amen and Son chapel at 4 o'clock tomorrow and until time of services.

Caler, Helen (Canfield)   LaPorte Herald Argus: 
  Mrs. Helen Mae Caler, age 100, formerly of LaPorte, died peacefully in her sleep at North Residential Hospice in Brooklyn Center, Minn., of heart failure, on Saturday morning, Feb. 16, 2002, at 7:40 a.m. After a physical decline of several months' duration. Helen had resided in Bloomington, Minn. , with her eldest granddaughter and her husband for the past six years. 
  Helen Mae Canfield, the eldest daughter of Oliver Adolphus Canfield and Abigail Estelle (Davis) was born Nov. 2, 1901, in Bricelyn, Fairbault County, Minn., where her father was an early town constable. She grew up in Chicago, Joliet, and Coal City, Ill., and Gary, Miller, and Michigan City, Ind., graduating from Michigan City's Elston High School in 1921. 
  On Jan. 11, 1922, she was married in Adair, Adair County, Iowa, to Frank Porter Caler of Beaver Falls, Pa., where they lived for 14 years before moving to Galena Township in LaPorte County, in January 1935. 
  Helen was a member of the East Galena Home Economics Club of LaPorte County for over 50 years, and also participated in the Ladies Aide Society of Maple Grove United Methodist Church in New Carlisle. She and her husband owned and operated Bonieview Orchard in Galena Township until retirement in the early 1960s, after which they enjoyed spending several winters in Tucson, Ariz. After her husband died in 1976, Helen resided with her cousin, Pearl Uporsky, in Portge, Ind., where they were active volunteers at the Chapel of the Dunes. She resided with her daughter and son-in-law Marjorie and Vance Albert, of Culver, Ind., before moving to Chicago Trail Village in New Carlisle in January of 1987. She returned to Minnesota in 1996 at the age of 94. 
  Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Porter Caler; her younger sister, Lolita Evaretta Shipley; and two of her children, Jane Louise Jeffrey of LaPorte, and Marvin Keith Caler of Mishawaka. She is survived by two children, Marjorie Mae (Vance) Albert of Culver and Frank Robert (Edna) Caler of San Antonio, Texas; and 10 grandchildren, Karen (Dean) Luedtke of Bloomington, Howard (Toni) Albert of Argos, Ind. Boni (Dean) Danner of Waukesha, Wis., Norman (Doreen) Albert of Culver, Peggy Caler of Grundy, Va., Bill (Coreta) Caler of Converse, Texas, Robyn (Dan) Armstrong of Mishawaka, Mark Caler of Cassopolis, Mich., Steven (Telsia) Caler of Collinsville, Ill., and Jim Caler of Waukesha; as well as 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a cousin, Dorothy (Robert) Lyles of Michigan City, as well as Donald Jeffrey of New Carlisle, Carol Caler of Mishawaka, Norma Caler of LaPorte and several nieces and nephews. 
   Funeral arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte. Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday evening, Feb., 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. with Pastors Jim Caler and Paul Loder officiating. Interment will be at Foster Cemetery in Galena Township, LaPorte County. 
  Memorial contributions may be made to the organization of choice or to East Galena Home Economics Club.

Caler, Marvin   - June 17, 1995 (Probably Herald Argus) 
  The funeral for Mr. Marvin K. Caler, 58, of 2312 Cassopolis St., Elkhart, will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Haverstock Funeral Home with Pastor Floyd Wilcox and Rev. Lonnie Blount officiating. He died Tuesday, June 13 1995, at 7:45 p.m. LaPorte time in Brecksville, Ohio. 
   Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 pm. Sunday and from 8 a.m. until the service Monday. Burial will be in Foster Cemetery in Rolling Prairie. 
  Memorial contributions may be made to Diabetes Foundation. 
  He was born April 24, 1937, in Galena Township, Ind., to Porter and Helen (Canfield) Caler, and had lived in Elkhart for five years, moving from South Bend. Mr. Caler was an automobile transporter for Avis. 
  On Oct. 18, 1988, in LaPorte, he married Carol Kline, who survives. 
  Also surviving are one step-daughter, Penny LaTour of Mishawaka, Ind.; one stepson, James Weber of Mishawaka; one step-granddaughter; his mother of New Carlisle; two sisters, Marjorie Albert of Culver, Ind., and Janet Jeffrey of Rolling Prairie, and one brother, Frank R. of Cassopolis, Mich. 
  He was preceded in death by one stepson and his father.

CALUSA, MRS. STELLA - - Michigan City, Evening News Monday Mar 1, 1926 - - MRS. STELLA CALUSA Funeral services for Mrs. Stella Calusa, wife of Frank Calusa residing near Waterford, who died at her home on Saturday evening of intestinal influenza, at the age of 33 years, was held this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family home, with Rev. Lawrence Weber, assistant at St. Mary’s church, reading the Catholic burial service. Interment was at the Midway, Low Cemetery. Mrs. Calusa is survived by a husband and two daughters, Inez and Dorothy, and on son, Henry Calusa. She was born Nov. 5, 1892 at Chicago. Contributed by: Laura J. Heckman

Canfield, Oliver A.   - LaPorte Herald Argus Wednesday, June 8, 1955 
  Oliver A. Canfield, 87, of route 3, LaPorte, died at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Caler. He had been ill for two years. 
  Mr. Canfield was born in Oregon, Ill., to David and Marie Canfield on May 23, 1867. He came to this county two years ago from Creaton, Ia. He was a retired electrician and a member of the K. of P. Lodge. 
  Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Caler, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 
  Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday at the Haverstock Funeral home. Burial will be in Foster cemetery. Friends may call at the Haverstock chapel tonight and until time of services.

Cannon, George H. - Death Date 8/16/1933    George H. Cannon, age 75, Kingsbury, World War veteran, passed away at 11:30 a.m. yesterday at his home after an illness of two days. The son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cannon, he was born in Valparaiso on December 11, 1857, moving to Kingsbury 15 years ago from Kankakee, Illinois. He was married in 1886 to Mattie Flayhart. Mr. Cannon was a school teacher and newspaper editor before serving as a mechanic in Company L of the 129th U.S. Infantry. He was a member of the Kankakee Christian Church and of the Masonic Lodge of Kingsbury and the Odd Fellows of Michigan City. Surviving are two sisters. Mrs. Anna J. Trask and Mrs. Lillie M. Munger of Kingsbury, and four brothers, Charles and Frank Cannon of Kingsbury, John Cannon of Gary, and Richard Canon of Westville. Funeral services will be held at the Kingsbury Baptist Church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock Standard time, the Rev. Wyman A. Hull officiating. The body may be viewed at the O. M. Haverstock chapel here until 1 p.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Kingsbury Cemetery.

Cannon, James Charles - LaPorte County IN Obit Newspaper date 2/29/40    James Charles Cannon, 78, of Walkerton, rural route No. 2, died at the Holy Family hospital at 11 o'clock last night following an illness of two years. His wife Mary preceded him in death by 11 days. Mr. Cannon was born in Porter County, near Valparaiso, April 23 1861 and had lived near Walkerton for 40 years. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Cannon belonged to the Methodist Church. Surviving are one son Chester, Rock Falls, Ill; four daughters, Mrs. Laurence Tarnow, Laporte ; Mrs. Frank DeWolfe, Laporte; Mrs. Victor Roose, Davenport, Ia; Mrs. Martuyle Perrigo, fish lake; two sisters Mrs. William Munger, Michigan City; Mrs. Anna Trask, Kingsbury; three brothers Richard and Frank Cannon both of Kingsbury; John Cannon, Gary; 26 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the O. M. Haverstock chapel, the Rev. W. E. Clarke officiating. Burial will be in the Kingsbury Cemetery. The body may be viewed from tomorrow morning until time for the rites at the Haverstock Chapel.

Cannon, Mary - LaPorte County IN Obit Index, Cannon Mary Isabelle, Father Blair, Newspaper Date 2/19/40    Mrs. Mary Isabelle Blair Cannon, age 74, Fish Lake, died Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of her daughter Mrs. Martuyle Perrigo, after an extended illness. She was born in Sullivan County, Missouri on Feb. 27, 1865, she was married to J. Charles Cannon, who survives. Mrs. Cannon was a member of the Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to her husband are four daughters, Mrs. Perrigo, Mrs. Victor Roose of Davenport, Iowa, Mrs. Frank DeWolf and Mrs. Lawrence Tarnow both of LaPorte; one son Chester B. Cannon of Rock Falls, Ill, 28 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four brothers John Blair of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; David Blair of Hossington, Kans; James Blair of Silver Creek, Nebraska, and Theodore Blair of Fullerton, Nebraska. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Haverstock funeral home. The Rev. W. E. CAVINDER, ALONZO L. V.    - LaPorte Daily Argus, Mar 7, 1949
Alonzo L.V. Cavinder, 70, of 611 1/2 Michigan Avenue, died at 12:45 o'clock Saturday afternoon at his home after an illness of six days. The son of Theodore and Sarah Cavinder, he was born in Ohio on Oct. 11, 1875 and had lived here for 38 years, coming from Medaryville. He was a city employee. On Dec. 31, 1899 in Knox he was married to Rosetta Norman, who died in 1944. H was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are fur sons, Cloyd, Lawrence, and Emery, of LaPorte, and Milton of New Buffalo; two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Biggs, Detroit, and Mrs. Bethel Swearingen, Big Bow, Kan.; 22 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon of Wheatfield, Ind., and Ernest of Angola. Four sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at Haverstock's chapel with the Rev. Roy B. Warner officiating.    Mrs. Rose Etta Cavinder, 65, of 611 1/2 Michigan avenue, died at 3:38 yesterday morning at her home, following an illness of four years. The daughter of Presley and Mary Norman, she was born in Union Mills on October 28, 1878 and came here from Medaryville. On December 31, 1899 in Knox, she was married to Lon Cavinder who survives. She was a member of the Seven Day Adventist church of Knox. Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Mrs. Lillie Biggs of Detroit; Mrs. Blanche Hyatte, Rolling Prairie; Mrs. Bethel Swearingen, New Castle; four sons, Claude and Lawrence of LaPorte; Milton of New Buffalo and Emery of Chicago; 21 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four brothers, Wilson, Matthew, and Aaron of Hamlet and John of Culver; one sister, Miss Elizabeth Norman of Chicago. Four brothers, one sister and her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. B.R. Lake of the Free Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Patton cemetery. Chadderdon, Edith Wrasse - Herald Argus Wed., Aug 30 1931 - MRS. EDITH CHADDERDON - Mrs. Edith Chadderdon age 43. of 337 Montrose street, passed away this morning at 6:30 at Fairview hospital.
  Mrs. Chadderdon was born in LaPorte on Jul 12, 1883 and lived here all her life. She was married in South Bend to Jay Chadderdon who survives. Mrs. Chadderdon was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Others surviving are her mother, Mrs. Louisa Wrase of Laporte; five children, Harry, Harold, George, Krlan and Dorothy Chadderdon; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Raymond and Mr. Raymond Purcell; four brothers, Fred, Walter, Ted and George Wrase, and two grandchildren, Lois and Phylis Chadderdon. MRS. CLARA C. CHAMBERS   - LaPorte County Museum in LaPorte, LaPorte, IN. (1935)    Mrs. Clara C. Chambers, age 68, of Union Mills, passed away yesterday at her home after an illness with heart disease. The daughter of Henry A., and Minerva (Gridley) Canfield, Mrs. Chambers was born in Noble township, this county, on May 11, 1867. On Jan. 1, 1899, she married to George Chambers. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian church of Union Mills. Surviving are one son, Lowell Chambers of Union Mills; two daughters, Fredda Wakeman of Union Mills and Miss Harriet Chambers of LaPorte. Funeral Services will be held at the Lowell Chambers home three miles south of Union Mills, at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. The Rev. CHAMBERS, GRACE MARCELE – The LaPorte Daily Herald Argus, Monday, Feb 23, 1931 Grace Marcele Chambers, two-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Chambers, died at 3:30 this morning at the Chambers' home, three and a half miles southeast of Union Mills. She was ill 10 days with pneumonia. She was born last Dec. 14 in Noble township. Her father and mother; two brothers, Herbert and Eugene, and a sister, Charlotte, survive.  Lowell Chambers, 80 Union Mils, died at 5 am today at E Street division hospital following an illness of four months. He was born in Union Mills April 12, 1891 and had lived in the area all of his life. He was married Nov. 29, 1917 at Union Mills to Mabel Wakeman, who survives. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and a retired farmer. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Carl Miller of Bourbonnais, Ill.; two sons, Eugene of South Bend, and Herbert of Winchester, Va,; one sister, Mrs. Raymond Sheely of LaCross and five grandchildren. MARY A. CHAMBERS    - Mrs. Mary A. Chambers, 85, of 1125 Indiana Avenue, died at 8:05 last evening in the Holy Family hospital after being in poor health for several years. The daughter of Elias and Phoebe Hollandsworth, she was born March 24, 1868, in Missouri. She had lived here since 1918, coming from Union Mills. She was married in Valparaiso Nov. 24, 1887 to Oscar C. Chambers who died April 29, 1937. Mrs. Chambers was a member of the First Methodist church. Survivors include two daughters, Miss Leeta M. Chambers, at home, and Mrs. Leona B. Blodgett, of Cassopolis Mich.; one sister, Mrs. Belle Holderman of North Liberty; one brother, Hal Hollandsworth of Union Mills; three grandsons; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. One son, one daughter, two sisters, and four brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Cutler Brothers chapel. OSCAR C. CHAMBERS   - LaPorte Daily Herald Argus, Thurs, April 29, 1937    Oscar C. Chambers, age 68, of 1201 Michigan Avenue, passed away at his residence at 2:15 this morning. The son of Obediah and Lydia (Lloyd) Chambers, he was born in Noble township on Sep. 18, 1868. He had lived in LaPorte for the past 19 years, moving here from Union Mills. He was an agricultural implement salesman. On Nov. 24, 1887, at Valparaiso, he married Mary A. Hollandsworth, who survives. Other survivors are two daughters, Leeta Chambers, at home and Mrs. Leona Blodgett of Cassopolis, Mich., four grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ella Cowden of LaPorte; two brothers, Andy Chambers, of Seattle, Wash., and George Chambers of Plymouth, Ind.; eight nieces and four nephews. One son and one daughter preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, DST. at the E.E. Ebbert chapel. The Rev. F.G. Kenny will officiate and burial will be in the Union Mills cemetery. The body may be viewed at the Ebbert chapel from tomorrow evening until the time of the service.

Walter Chapman III: UNION MILLS — Walter W. Chapman III, 82, Union Mills, died at 8:59 p.m. Saturday (June 26, 1999) at LaPorte Hospital. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Karen Altergott officiating. Burial is at Door Village Cemetery, LaPorte. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. until the service Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Chapman was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Scipio Township, LaPorte County, to Ralph and Lucinda White Chapman. On Nov. 9, 1968, in Hudson Lake, he married Grace Leonard. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mary Jo Fettinger, LaPorte; two sons, Robert Chapman, Bridge Port, Texas, and Ronald Chapman, Walkerton; a stepdaughter, Nancy Winn, LaPorte; two stepsons, John Leonard, Rocky Mount, N.C., and Roy F. Leonard, Panama City, Fla.; a sister, Charlotte Jones, Bessemer, Ala.; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Mr. Chapman retired in 1985 after 19 years as a forklift-truck driver for Whirlpool Corp. He was a member of Hanna United Methodist Church, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, a 40-year member of the Farm Bureau and a member of Local 1172 of the United Auto Workers. Memorials may be made to Hanna United Methodist Church.

Chase, Mrs. Adele (Barnes) - The Herald-Argus, Wednesday, June 5, 1946, page 2 Chase Funeral. Funeral services for Mrs. Adele (Barnes) Chase, 78, of 405 Maple avenue, wife of Stephen L. Chase, who died at 11:30 yesterday morning at the Fairview hospital, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. H.L. Conley officiating. Burial will be in Patton cemetery. Friends may call tonight at the chapel and until time of the funeral. The daughter of Joseph and Martha Thompson, she was born in Michigan City on Jan. 22, 1865 and had lived here practically all her life. On Oct. 1, 1937 in La Porte she was married to Stephen L. Chase who survives. She was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are her husband, one son, Lyn L. Barnes, Hammond, Ind., three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

CHRISTIE, MILO E. - Argus Monday, Nov 26, 1923 pg.#3 J. C.Bachman, secretary of LaPorte Trail of Ben Hur, received a telegram yesterday advising him of the death in a hosp9tal in Indianapolis of Milo E. Christie, of this city. Mr. Christie was a member of the Ben Hur and the telegram advising Mr. Bachman of the former's death was signed by his sons Clem and Bend. Mr. Christie went to Indianapolis to undergo an operation, it is said, for cancer of the tongue. He is survived by his two sons. Mrs. Christie preceding him in death a number of years ago. The remains, it is understood, will be taken to Elkhart for interment. The deceased was a resident of LaPorte for many years. Mr. Christie at one time was cashier in the office of the New York Central Railroad Co. He later filled other positions of responsibility. His Las employment was with the Advance Realty Co. Christofferson Funeral - LaPorte Herald-Argus - 2 July 1929 - Funeral services of Florence Bell Christofferson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lofgren, were held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 at her home and at 3:30 at the Bethany Lutheran church. The Rev. Martin Gustafson officated. Florence was confirmed in the Bethany Lutheran church in April and the girls of her confirmation class were her pall bearers. She was laid to rest in Pine Lake cemetery. Clark, age 75, passed away this morning at 2:15 at the home of her sister, Mrs. Eva A. Dawson, 521 Lincoln Way East, after a three weeks' illness of complications. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hostetler. Mrs. Clark was born in Wills township and lived in this county practically all her life, except for several winters spent in Miami, Fla. She was married on March 2, 1887, to Thomas M. Clark. Mrs. Clark was a member of the First Brethren church of North Liberty. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Alta M. Steckel of Miami; three sons, Joe H. Clark of LaPorte, David T. Clark of Rolling Prairie and Gabriel W. Clark of Kiowa, Colo.; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah M. Farrell of Tyner, Mrs. Eva A. Dawson of LaPorte and Mrs. Mabel Miller of Mill Creek; four brothers, Joseph A. Hostetler of Miami, John W. Hostetler of Mill Creek, Gabriel A. Hostetler of Mill Creek and David M. Hostetler of New Carlisle, 28 nephews and nieces and 26 great nephews and nieces.

Clemons, Cliff - News Dispatch- Michigan City, IN - 11/23/1997 - KINGSFORD HEIGHTS - Cliff "Sonny" Clemons, 39, Kingsford Heights, died at 10:18 a.m. Friday (Nov. 21, 1997) at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Duane Champion officiating. Burial will follow in Rolling Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and until the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Clemons was born June 19, 1958, in Knox, Ind., the son of Art and Lassie Bailey Clemons. On Sept. 1, 1984, in Kingsford Heights, he married Wanda Horton, who survives. Also surviving are his parents; a son, Charles Nebelung, LaPorte; a granddaughter, Elonda Nebelung, LaPorte; four sisters, Diana Kay Gudeman, Brenda Jensen and Pam Warmbein, all of Knox, and Linda Juszkiewicz, LaPorte; and a brother, Art Clemons, Union Mills. He was preceded in death by a son, Shawn Clemons, a nephew, Jeremy Jenkins, and Jenkins’ fiancee, Rachel. Mr. Clemons owned and operated GlasPro in Kingsford Heights. He attended Bible Baptist Church and was an avid fisherman.

Closser, Deacon N.W. - "The Daily Herald, LaPorte, Indiana" - Saturday June 20, 1891
   Deacon N. W. Closser died last evening at 8 o’clock. He was 79 years old the 13th of January last, and was born in Washington County, Penn on Jan. 13, 1812. He was taken by his parents to Warren County, Ohio at the age of three years. Subsequently his parents moved to Butler County, where the deceased lived until 11 years of age, when the family moved to Indianapolis, arriving there Jan. 8, 1823. In April 1834 Mr. Closser came to LaPorte County, settling near Door Village and he remained a resident of the County until his death. In 1833 he married Rebecca, daughter of William Parker, formerly of Penn., who preceeded him in death. To them were born six children, namely, Daniel P.; Elizabeth H.; Jerome B.; Sylvanus M.; Joseph A.; and Emily R., who are all living except Joseph A. He died at Indianapolis. About 8 years ago he married his second wife in whom he found a true helpmate and whose kind ministrations attended him in the hour of death.
  The deceased had been for nearly 50 years a Deacon of the Baptist Church, in whose communion he died. He was a pupil in the first Sabbath School organized in Marion County. He and his brother were the first teachers of music in this part of the country. He was the second constable of the County and trustee of Scipio Township one term. He was Superintendent of Schools and participated in the Black Hawk War. Mr. Closser always took part in public affairs and was identified with the Whig and Republican parties.
Funeral services will be held at the family residence, 1406 Indiana Ave., tomorrow at 4 P.M. Interment will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.

Cole, Abby (McKellips) - LAPORTE DAILY HERALD-ARGUS Thursday, March 12, 1925     The death of Mrs. Abbie Cole age 80, a former Westville woman, occurred at 1:30 A.M. Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Calbetzor, of 1117 Lexington Ave., Elkart, Indiana. Death was caused by a complication of ailments, and during the final 10 days she was bedfast. The funeral services will be held at Door Village at 1:00 pm Friday. Burial will be at the Door Village Cemetery where her husband Henry Cole, who died in January 1918 is buried. Mrs. Cole was daughter of David & Lydia McKellips, born in Westville on April 4, 1844. Since the death of her husband she has made her home with her daughter in Elkart. Surviving Mrs. Cole in addition to the daughter Mrs. Calbetzor, are her daughters; Mrs. A. J. Holtz of Elkart; Mrs. Mary Forrester of Niles, Michigan; and Mrs. R. E. Hubbard of Whiting, Indiana; a son Frank Cole of Chicago; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
     "PASSING AWAY OF MRS. ABBY COLE"  - Mrs. Abby Cole, aged 80 years, formerly a resident of Westville, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Calbetzer in Elkhart last Wednesday afternoon, March 11th, death being caused by a complication of ailments. Funeral services were held at Door Village Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. E. T. Scott, of Westville officiating. Abby McKellips was born in New Durham township, LaPorte county, April 4th 1844. She would have been 81 years old this coming month. She was the youngest of eight children of David and Lydia McKellips and was the last one of the children to survive. She grew to womanhood and had passed her entire life in this vicinity. In early life she was united in marriage to Henry P. Cole, who preceded her in death seven years ago. To this union eight children were born, five of whom are still living. Eddie and Sadie passed away in infancy, and John W., at the age of 59 years. Those of the children who survive their mother are: Mrs. Etta Hubbard, of Whiting, Ind.; Mrs. Lydia Holtz and Mrs. Edna Calbetzer of Elkhart, Ind.; Mrs. Mary Forrester, of Niles, Mich.; and Frank L., of Chicago Heights, Ill. The deceased is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Cole was a devoted wife and mother and a kind and sympathetic friend, and her many former friends and neighbors in this vicinity will ever cherish her memory. During the funeral services, M-s- Cora Matott sang a very beautiful selection, assisted by E. T. Scott.

Cole, Harry Edwin – Died About June 1902    Harry Edwin Cole son of J. W. and Elma C. Cole died Wednesday night at 12 o'clock, aged 12 years, 1 month, and 2 days. Deceased was born in Westville and lived here until about three years ago, when he moved with his parents to Chicago Heights, and only returned to the place of his birth a few months ago. His playmates and all who knew him will cherish the memory of his kind and gentle disposition. He was aware of the approaching end and resignedly awaited the death angel to guide him to that unknown beyond. The funeral was held Saturday at 10:30 from the M.E. church, Rev. Dunklebarger, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Westville cemetery. **Additional notes: Harry Edwin Cole, son of John W and Elma Cole, grandson of Henry and Abby Cole. According to the 1900 census, he was born in May of 1890, so he must have died about June of 1902.

Cole, Henry P – Died 1918     Henry P. Cole was born in New Durham township, LaPorte county, May 23, 1841, and passed away at his home in this place Jan. 23, 1918, aged 76 years 8 months. He was the youngest son of John W. and Eliza A. Cole, early pioneers of this county. He leaves a wife, six children, thirteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, one brother, Albert W. Cole, and one sister, Mrs. Eliza Ann Baird, to mourn his loss. The funeral was held from the home Friday at 10:30, E.T. Scott conducting services which proved a kindly tribute to the memory of the deceased as well as a consolation to relatives and friends. Burial was in the cemetery at Door Village, where many of the fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters of this and other generations are gathered. Henry Cole was a kind neighbor, ever ready to assist in the care of the sick. Until the calamity which deprived him of his eyesight he was not only a familiar figure at the bedside of the sick and dying, but he was generally sought for in such capacity. To be worthy of this office invests the occupant with a certain distinction and builds around him tender memories. Many homes in this locality have known his ministrations. Mr. Cole came to be recognized as an authority in this locality in the practice of veterinary medicine. He bore the affliction of his later years with patience. Surviving him besides the widow are two sons, John and Frank, of Chicago Heights; and four daughters, Mrs. Etta Hubbard, of Robertsdale; Mrs. Lydia Holtz, of Elkhart; Mrs. Mary Forrester, of Cicero, Ill., and Mrs. Edna Calbetzer, of Flint, Mich.

Cole, John Alsworth - From the 23 Feb 1914 edition of Michigan City's "Evening News" page 4, column 4     The body of John Alworth Cole, a lifelong resident of New Durham township was buried last Thursday at Alida. Mr. Cole spent the last ten years of his life in Tiffin, Oh., where he died Feb. 16. He is survived by two children, T. J. Cole of Chicago, and Mrs. B. H. Fleming of South Bend. Cole, Walter C – Died 9/1911     Yesterday morning, Walter C. Cole ??? Walter Cole visited here ??? and apparently he was in his usual robust health and merry spirits. He came to accompany Ezra Geist to Philadelphia for a visit with his son, C. H. Geist. When the telegraph announced Walter's death, it seemed impossible. We learn he became ill on his way home from here, and was taken direct to the hospital from the train, where an operation for appendicitis was had Friday. He apparently rallied from the operation and his friends were encouraged to believe he would make a quick recovery from his illness. Then came the telegram announcing dissolution. Walter Cole was born at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Cole near Pinhook in New Durham township Dec 30, 1866, and would have been 45 years old in Dec. He attended school in Westville for a number of years, and was a general favorite, owing to his happy disposition. He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Edith Payne, also of this township, the father, Albert Cole, and brother C. W. Cole of LaPorte. Walter adopted railroading, serving as agent for the Pere Marquette at LaCrosse, LaPorte and Michigan City. He was making good progress when C. H. Geist made him a proposition to become identified with his gas and electric interest, and it was of such an advantageous nature that Mr. Cole accepted. He spent some time in Alabama City as local manager of one of Mr. Geist's plants, after which he was advanced to manager of the plant at Atlantic City. C. H. Geist and Walter C. Cole were neighbor farmer boys and schoolmates. When Mr. Geist arose to a position among the greater financiers, and had need of loyal lieutenants it was fitting that he should look back to a boyhood friend. W. C. Cole was a member of Westville Lodge of Odd Fellows. He was also a Mason and Maccabee, and contributed much of fraternity to the lodges with which he was identified. While he was a man of jovial spirits, he was first sincere, frank and possessed of a high sense of honor. Very, very many are those who will mourn with his loved ones the ways of Providence which has stricken so helpful member of society. We are brought to realize in the demise of Walter Cole the aptness of that old saying, "Death loves a shining mark." The funeral will likely be held Saturday at LaPorte, and the burial at Door Village. The hour has not been set at this writing.

Erastus, died 1850, is buried at Door Village and Jerusha is buried in Berlin, Green Lake, Wisconsin.

Collum, Marcena - In Michigan City News March 1, 1888    Marcena Collum, son of Wm. H. Collum, aged 15 years and 11 days died Feb. 21. His disease was lung fever. The remains were laid to rest in the family plot in Oak Grove cemetery.

CONANT, MARY J. – From Unknown La Porte newspaper, 28 January 1920    Mrs. Mary J. Conant was born October 17 1842 in Galena township, La Porte County, Ind., and died Jan. 21, 1920, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anna C. Hicks. She was 77 years, 3 months, 4 days old. Mrs. Conant was the daughter of Martin Bates. She had lived all her life in La Porte county and near the home where she was born. Feb. 1, 1866 she was married to Henry H. Conant and to this union four children were born: Ernest B. Conant of Indianapolis; Eva M. Porter, of Spirit Lake, Iowa; Anna C. Hicks of New Carlisle, Ind., and Alice C. Totman, of Winthrop, Minn., left to mourn the loss of a loving and devoted mother. Besides the four children, she leaves six grandchildren and one great-grandchild and one sister, Mrs. Alvira B. Towner of Rolling Prairie, and one brother, John Bates of Mishawaka. The husband died Dec. 14, 1894, preceding his wife by 25 years. She and the departed husband were lifelong members of the earthly church of Jesus Christ, and by their holy living have entitled themselves to membership in the nobler church triumphant. Her sweet and winsome disposition endeared her to friends, neighbors, and relatives, while even in her months of suffering she was a constant benediction to those who waited upon her. The funeral was held at the Methodist church at Rolling Prairie, at 2 p. m., Friday, Jan. 23. Burial in Rolling Prairie Cemetery.

Concannon, Mrs. Sarah - Obituary appeared in an 1867 newspaper      Thank you to Steve Austin for donating this obituary found in his old family bible. - Mrs. Sarah Concannon died at her residence in LaPorte County, Ind., January 1867 of Dropsy, Mrs. Sarah, wife of James Concannon. Mrs. Concannon was born in McMinn County, Tennessee, April 14th, 1808, emigrated with her parents to the State of Ohio, in 1812, united with the Christian Church in 1823 at the early age of 15 of which body she was a devoted member during the remainder of her life. She was married in 1825 and removed with her husband to LaFayette, Ind., in (year missing); In 1848 to this county where she resided until the time of her disease. An invalid for thirteen years, she bore her sufferings with Christian fortitude and died triumphant, testifying in the last hours of her unclouded life, hope for the Saviour, astonishing her stricken husband and children to meet her in heaven where sickness, death and parting are no more. poem as follows:

Coombs, 69, R.R. 3, LaPorte, sister of Guy Davis, this city, died at 3:45 Tuesday afternoon at her home after an illness of five months. She was the daughter of the late Lowell and Lydia Davis and the widow of Harry L. Coombs, who died nine years ago. She was born in Mishawaka, Sept. 30, 1873, and lived in Michigan City until 12 years ago. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Frank Caler, Galena Twp; and a sister, Mrs. R. Reisinger, Gary; a brother, Guy Davis, this city. Funeral services will be held at 3 Friday at the Haverstock chapel, LaPorte with Rev. J.N. Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Forest (s/b Foster) cemetery. Friends may call at Haverstock chapel from Thursday noon until the hour of the service.

Coombs, Harry Lee   - Michigan City News, June 5, 1934, page 2, col. 1    Harry Lee Coombs, an old resident of Galena township, died at 12:30 o'clock this morning. He was born June 18, 1860, in Galena township. At the age of 12 his parents moved to Iowa, but he returned to Galena township about 15 years later and continued to reside in the same house until his death.
Mr. Coombs was united in marriage to Mrs. Addie Canfield, Feb. 19, 1930, in Laporte. She survives him. He was well and favorably known throughout Galena township and his host of friends will be grieved to learn of his death.   Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Burial will be in Foster's cemetery.

Coombs -    Lottie (Beeman) Merrill Coombs
LPHA, Oct 7, 1927 -  Funeral services for Lottie (Beeman) Merrill Coombs, age 58, of Galena township, who died at 7 o'clock yesterday morning, will be held at the home at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, followed by services at the Baptist church here at 2:30.  The Rev John W. Moffatt will officiate.  Burial will be in Patton cemetery with Meloy & Connelly of Three Oaks, Mich, the undertakers in charge.  The deceased woman was born in St. Joseph, Mich, on March 16, 1869.  From 1911 to 1913, she was a Baptist missionary to Deadwood and Leets, S.D.  Mrs. Coombs was a life-long member of the Baptist church.  She lived in Galena township from 1915 to the time of her death.  Surviving are her husband, Harry L.Coombs, her mother, Mrs. C.A. Beeman and one nephew, Harold Blackburn, of LaPorte.Additional Information:  Her first marriage was to Abraham Lincoln Merrill on July 12 1893, who died Jan 30 1909 and is buried in Patton Cemetery

Cooper, Elizabeth (Horner) – Michigan City News, December 13, 1916    The News has been handed the following obituary of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Cooper, whose death occurred a few days ago at her home near Hatches Mills: Elizabeth Horner was born April 1, 1841, in Laporte county, Indiana, and was married to Stephen Cooper May 10, 1959. To this union were born three boys and three girls, two girls dying in infancy. One son, George B. Cooper, died Feb. 11, 1896 in San Antonio, Tex., where he had gone for his health. Another son, Frank, died April 20, 1897. Mrs. Cooper had been in poor health for years, and passed away at her home in Hatches Mills at 8:30. She leaves to mourn her loss, her sorrowing husband, who has been confined to his bed almost constantly for the past six months, one son, Melvin, of Craig, Colo., and one daughter, Mrs. Stella Mayes, who has cared for her parents for the past four years, two grandchildren, Oliver Slater, of Springville township, and Miss Dora Cooper, of Laporte, besides other relatives and many friends. She united with the Christian church 35 years ago. Rev. Vanorman, of Hatches Mills, had charge of the funeral services. Those from away who were present were: Mrs. Fecha Dills, Osola, Ind., a niece of the deceased; Mrs. Gust Long and Mrs. Lydia Russell, of Michigan City. Burial was at Hesston cemetery on Tuesday morning.

Copeland, Abial C. The Acorn, Three Oaks, Michigan, September 10, 1925; page 1    "ABIAL C. COPELAND - Abial C. Copeland was born in Jefferson County, N. Y., May 7, 1838, and with his parents moved to Oswego County while he was yet a little child.
"In 1850 he was united in marriage to Lucretia Barrett. To this union was born 4 children, Addie C. Leigh of Three Oaks, Mich.; Warren Burton of of Providence, R. I.; Edith Montella Hudson of San Diego, Calif.; and Nettie Lillian, who died in 1899 at the age of 23 years and 6 months at Providence, R. I. Mrs. Copeland's death occurred August 25, 1876. In 1856 Mr. Copeland with his wife and two children moved to Hillsdale County, Mich., remaining there a little less than 3 years.
"In November 1867 he came to Three Oaks, where his father's family had preceded him. In or near this town he spent the last 58 years of his life, except the years from 1885 to 1890, which time he lived near Chappell, Neb. He returned from Nebraska in the autumn of 1890, and entered into a second marriage with Mrs. Emeline Warner, Dec. 19, 1890, who survives him. "He departed this life Aug. 30, 1925, aged 87 years, 3 months and 23 days." Burial in Foster Cemetery.

Copeland, Henrietta (Barnes) - Galien River Gazette, Thursday, December 18, 1930    Henrietta BARNES was born in Galena township, LaPorte county, Indiana, May 1, 1844 and passed away at her home, December 9, 1930, at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 8 days. There were five children in the Barnes family. Lydia Barnes MARSTON, Julia Barnes, William, Henrietta and Adeline. All of Mrs. Copeland's sisters and brothers preceded her in death. October 30, 1866 at Niles, (Berrien Co.) Michigan, she was united in marriage to Sylvester COPELAND.
To this union were born four children, Charles, who died in infancy, Ada Belle, who passed away November 6, 1897; Amos B., who resides at Elk Rapids, Michigan, and Walter, of this city. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Copeland lived south of Three Oaks, near Hatch's Mills. Later they moved to their farm northwest of town, where they lived happily for several years. About 27 years ago they moved to Three Oaks.
Early in life Mrs. Copeland united with the Christian church. She was a faithful Christian wife and mother and was loved by all who knew her. Those that mourn her loss are her husband, two sons, Amos and Walter, and three grandchildren, Louise, Ada Belle, and Nellie Marie Copeland, besides a host of friends. Funeral services were held from the home Friday afternoon, December 12, Rev. J.O. WALTON, of the Harbert church, officiating.  Burial was in the Foster cemetery.

COPLIN, MARQUIS, From unknown LaPorte newspaper, 17 March 1936    Marquis Coplin, age 86, of 906 Linwood avenue, a life-long resident of La Porte county, passed away at the Holy Family hospital at 7:30 last evening after an illness of several months. He was born in LaPorte county on Feb. 13, 1850. On March 4, 1869 he married Emma J. Anderson who passed away on Jan. 10, 1910. In 1911 he married Anna Flood Standiford, who died on May 15, 1931. Surviving are two nieces, Miss Evadna Flood and Miss Bernice Flood, both of LaPorte. Two sons preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at the E. E. Ebbert chapel at 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon. The Rev. Russell L. Phillips will officiate and burial will be in the Rolling Prairie cemetery with E. E. Ebbert in charge.

Corbly, Ella (Ayers)Mrs. ----Mrs. Corbly, 93 Dies At Home Talented Pioneer Resident succumbs After Three Year Illness Mrs. Ella Corbly, 93, one of Michigan City's pioneer residents and oldest citizens died at 8:15 last night at her home at 409 1/2 York Street after an illness of three years. She was born on Nov. 26, 1849 in Wilcox county, Alabama, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Ayers. her father was a northernr who married a southern girl and refused to fight with the rebel army during the Civil War. He fled north with another man while his wife and children and other women followed, finally joining the men at Chattanooga, Tenn., after untold hardships and trials. They settled first in Elkhart, and a short time later moved to Waterford where Mrs. Corbly met her husband Paul Corbly, who was a teacher at Walkerton. They married on Dec. 26, 1866 in LaPorte. Mr. Corbly was a justice of the peace here for many years and was know to everyone as Squire Corbly. He died April 1905. He was a Civil War veteran. Mrs. Corbly was an accomplished ianist and organist and was also an able dramatist. She was a charter member of the Women's Relief Corps and was a member of the First Methodist church. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Jessie Young and Mrs. Mary A. Lambka, this city, and a son, Alfred Corbly, Cincinnati, Ohio, 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. A brother Charles Ayers, Eureka, Calif., also survives. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 at the Carlisle funderal home with Rev. Henry V. Deale officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood. Friends may call at Carlisle's Friday evening and Saturday until the funeral hour.

Is Dead Aged Justice of the Peace Passes Away Tuesday.
Had Been a Helpless Invalid the Last Eight Weeks. After many weeks of severe suffering Paul J. Corbly, for years a justice of the peace in this city, died at 3 o"clock last Tuesday at the home of his widow, 219 West Market street. His death was caused by a complication of diseases. Two years ago this month Mr. Corbly underwent an operation, and from that time his health gradually failed him. Early last winter he went to the National Soldiers' home at Marion, Ind., for treatment, but he gained no relief and came home within two or three weeks. From time to time afterwards he was able to be on the streets in fair weather, but eight weeks ago last Wednesday he was taken to his bed, to which he had ever since been confined. For weeks since he had been helpless, and his suffering was intense, but during the last four or five days he lay in a comatose state and was hardly conscious of his affliction. Mr. Corbly was born in Hamilton county, Ohio, June 27, 1837, and he would have been sixty-eight years old had he lived until his next birthday. He was a son of Justice and Mary Corbly, who settled in Ohio in an early day. At the age of seventeen, Paul J., having acquired a good education, went south and began teaching school near Savannah, Tenn., after which he taught in Corinth, Miss., and in White county, Arkansas, and 1862 found him at West Point, Ark., from which he entered the confederate army as clerk in the quarter master's department, which position he held for one year, but he was not in sympathy with the southern cause, and he returned to his home in Ohio. Having five brothers in the union army, Mr. Corbly volunteered in Co. A, Second United States Volunteers of Ohio, as second sergeant. His command went on the frontier, and he again was in the quartermaster's department, which position he held until he was discharged November 7, 1865, at For Leavenworth, Kas.
     After a short stay in Ohio at the close of the war, Mr. Corbly came to this state, in 1866, and stopped in St. Joseph county for some time, when he again followed his profession. In 1872 he came to this county, and in 1878 he moved to Coolspring township, where he taught school several years. In 1892 Mr. Corbly moved to Michigan City and had resided here continuously since that time. Mr. Corbly was a democrate and an earnest part worker. During his stay in St. Joseph county he held the office of constable and deputy sheriff. He was a justice of the peace in this township practically all the years he resided here and resigned last November because of ill health, and was succeeded by Jonathan Snook, who was appointed by the county commissioners. Mr. Corbly was married December 16, 1886 to Miss Ella Ayers of Laporte, who was born in Wilcox county, Alabama, and three children were born to them, namely, Mrs. Grant R. Young and Mrs. Charles Lambka of this city and Alfred Corbly of Union City, Ind. He is survived by his widow and three children, besides two sisters and one brother of Cincinnati, O. Years ago Mr. Corbly was granted a pension for his services in the union army, but in 1895 his name was dropped from the rolls by a ruling of the pension department, because he had served in the confederate army, but the case was taken up by Mr. Corbly and his friends and a ruling was made by the department, whereby Mr. Corbly was restored to the list of pensioners.
    Last fall he was granted a pension of $10 a month and back pay amounting to $800, covering the eight years he was off the rolls. Mr. Corbly was not a member of any society. The funeral will be held from the house Thursday afternoon, and the services will be conducted by Dr. S. B. Town, pastor of the First Methodist church, Mr. Corbly having been a member of the Methodist Episcopal faith.

    The funeral of Paul J. Corbly, who died Tuesday, was held at 2 o"clock on Thursday from the home of his widow at 219 W. Market street in the presence of a large umber of the friends of the deceased. Relatives from other places who were in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. John Ayers of Chicago, the latter a sister of Mrs. Corbly, Fred Corbly of Union City, Ind., son; Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Martin of Laporte, the latter a cousin, and Mrs. Patrick Curtain of Whiting, the latter a sister of Mrs. Corbly. The services were conducted by Dr. S. by Town, pastor of the First Methodist church, and the music was by a quartet from the Methodist church, comprised of Miss Florence Hoffman, John Young, Mrs. Edward Wickemeyer and F. C. Carson, With Mrs. Omer Wright as pianist. The pallbearers were W. H. Davis, Robert Donnell, G. W. Edick, V. W. Bartholomew, Edward Pinn, Sr., and Jonathan Snook. Costella - Mildred Costello - 12/27/2001 - Michigan City, News Dispatch - -NEW Carlisle — Mildred A. Costello, 87, New Carlisle, died at 12:12 a.m. Monday (Dec. 24, 2001) at Hamilton Grove, New Carlisle. The service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 a.m. Friday until the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Costello was born July 15, 1914, in LaPorte, to Charles Wheatbrook Sr. and Eliza Jane (McNeal) Wheatbrook. On May 27, 1932, in LaPorte, she married Raymond Marquart, who died May 6, 1979. On Oct. 18, 1980, in LaPorte, she married Kenneth Costello who died Jan. 5, 1990. Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Buerger, LaPorte; one son, John R. Marquart, South Holland, Ill.; four grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and one brother, Charles Wheatbrook Jr., Rolling Prairie. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Elaine Marek; four sisters, Lottie Dunham, Gladys Fack, Ruth Geisinger and Evelyn Ray; and one brother, Randall Wheatbrook. Mrs. Costello had been a custodian at T.P. Laboratories. She was a member of Springville Free Methodist Church and was an active member of the Pine Lake Grange. Memorials may be made to Springville Free Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Coulter, Silas B. - Daily Herald, Friday Feb 19, 1909     Born June 14, 1834 in Indiana
    Silas Coulter, who came to the county infirmary many years ago, from Hanna, died there of a complication of diseases, which included mental disorder. He was 72 years old and had been in the Longcliff asylum at Logansport at one time. He left some money and so the body was taken to the Westville cemetery for burial. A niece from Plymouth was the only mourner.
He died Feb 7, 1909 from illness and was buried in Coulter Cemetery on February 10, 1909.

COWDEN FUNERAL – The Daily Argus, Jan 7, 1948     Funeral services for Mrs. Eldora Cowden, 75, of 408 H Street, who died at 9:30 o'clock Monday night at her home, will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock chapel with the Rev. C.H. Lininger officiating. Burial will be in Union Mills cemetery. Friends may call tomorrow afternoon at the chapel and until time of funeral. The daughter of Obie and Lydia Chambers, she was born in Union Mills Feb. 20, 1872 and had lived here all her life. On April 16, 1892 in Hanna she was married to Robert Cowden, who preceded her in death. Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Orcutt, LaPorte; one son, Clayton Cowden, Santa Rose, Calif.; two grandchildren and three great-children.

Cowan, Benjamin,   -  LaPorte Herald-Argus - 2 July 1929 Benjamin F. Cowan Benjamin F. Cowan, age 81, of Scipio township passed away yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Mr. Cowan was borin in Wapakoneta, O., Dec. 12, 1845. he was a member of the United Brethren Church. Surviving are: one aunt, Lavina Good of LaPorte county; one granddaughter, Eileen Cowan of Chicago, and serveral nieces and nephews in Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Kingsbury Baptist church. The Rev. M.G. Long will officate.    Hobart, Ind. - Mrs. Blanche M. Cox, 75, of Hobart, died Wednesday, June 7, at her home. 
  She was a Gary-Hobart area resident for 52 years and retired in 1970 from Methodist Hospital, Gary; after serving 30 years. She was a life member of the Distinguished Service Club of Methodist Hospital. 
  Surviving are one son, Robert (Peggy) Cox of Fort Wayne, Ind. and one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Anderson of Hobart; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two brothers, Lyle Cadwell of Rolling Prairie and Jack Cadwell of Michigan City. 
  Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Rees Funeral Home, Hobart with Rev. Donald Weaver officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. this evening. Burial will be in Foster Cemetery, Rolling Prairie.

Craft, Mrs. Fannie - Appeared in unknown local newspaper in 1948    Funeral Services for Mrs. Fannie Craft, 84, who died at 10 o'clock Monday night at the Fairview hospital after an illness of about two years, will be held at the Giese and Kimball funeral home on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Wilber H. Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Patton cemetery. The LaPorte chapter O. E. S. will have a part in the service. Friends may call at the funeral home from Friday noon until time of the services. She was born in LaPorte on July 1, 1864 and had lived her practically all her life. She was married to Seth Craft, who died in 1932. Mrs. Craft was a member of the First Baptist church of LaPorte of the LaPorte chapter of O. E. S. No. 280, of which she was a past matron.
Surviving are one son, Harry V. Craft, LaPorte; a grandson, Vernon Craft, LaPorte, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Charles Becknell, El Paso, Texas; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Death of a Pioneer.   Andrew Cramer was born December 9, 1826, in Tickenfeldt , Germany . He emigrated to America in 1864, settling in LaPorte. For the past thirty years he resided at Hanna, where he departed this life June 4, 1907. In 1855 ihe was united in marriage to Mary Randolph, who with four children—Joseph, Mrs. Anna Coash, Mrs. Louisia Moore and Mrs. Rose Caldwell—survive him. He served in Company C 29th Indiana , in the civil war and was honorably discharged in 1865.

Crance, Bert- Sat 15 Aug, 1925 - Bert Crance, age 55, of Willvale, died at his home there at 10 a.m. yesterday, it was learned today.
  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at t he Hanna Methodis church. Burial will be made in Union Mills Cemetery. John Sweitzer, is the undertaker.

  Rev. W. D. Ecklor of Hanna was in charge and burial was made in the Union MIlls Cemetery. J. G. Sweitzer of Union Mills was the undertaker.  -  Mr. Crance was born in Noble township, Jan 24, 1870. When a small child he moved with his parents to Willvale and lived there until his death. - - He was married to Della Muske of Willvale - March 17, 1901. To this union was born two children, Mrs. Gilbert Vick of Hanna and Ira Crance, who with Mrs. Crance survive.

Crance, Della LPA 0 30 July 1951 - Mrs. Della Crance, 73 of route 1, Hanna died at 5:30 o'clock this morning at the Ruff Nursing home in Knox after an illness of four months. - - She was born in Cass township on Sept 23, 1887 and had lived in Hanna most of her life.   On March 17, 1900<sic> (per records 1901 was correct year) she was married to Bertie Crance. Surviving are one son, Ora R., one sister Miss Tena Nuska?, both of route 1, Hanna and two grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held o Wednesday afternon at 2:30 at the Kosanke Brothers chapel in Union Mills with burial in Union Mills Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeralchapel tomorrow evening and until the time of services on Wednesday.

Crittendon - Clarence Crittendon - 1/11/2002 - Michigan City, News Dispatch - -Clarence T. Crittendon, 74, Michigan City, died at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) at his residence. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carlisle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne Rossen officiating. Burial is in Springville Cemetery with military rites rendered. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. John Franklin Miller American Legion Post will have a memorial at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Mr. Crittendon was born Sept. 14, 1927, in Elgin, Ill., to Osborne Crittendon. On Nov. 17, 1978, he married Geneva Johnson. She survives. Also surviving are a stepson, Jessie Holliday, Michigan City; a daughter, Teresa (Robert Lamphiear) Crittendon, Michigan City; three stepdaughters, Rachael Foster, Annie Kay Holliday and Gloria Ann Holliday, all of Michigan City; and a grandson, Dakota Allen Lamphiear. Mr. Crittendon was an aviation mechanic with the rank of master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, and worked for 10 years at Hayes Republic after retiring from the Air Force. He was a member of John Franklin Miller American Legion Post 37, and attended Purdue University in the later 1990s. Memorial contributions may be made to National City Bank in care of the Crittendon family.

Cross, Daniel Michigan City News, 23 January 1895 The funeral of Daniel Cross was held from the Waterford school house Sunday afternoon and the remains were interred in Lowe's cemetery.

CROSS, DANIEL - - - Michigan City News Thursday Jan 26, 1888 - - DANIEL CROSS    At Waterford, at one o’clock Sunday, (Jan 22,. 1888), a well-known citizen of the county, died of typhoid pneumonia. He was born in Randolph, Ohio in 1824, sixty-four years ago, and when quite young went to Lake county, where he lived until April, 1883, when he moved to Waterford. Shortly after this he married Miss Lizzie Reed. He is a brother of Richard Cross of Waterford; and much respected by his neighbors. The funeral will occur on Tuesday at Midway.     Mrs. Marilla Davis Cross died at 7 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of her son, B.F. Cross, at Waterford. Mrs. Cross was born in Chautauqua county, New York, on January 15, 1824, and was 98 years old at the time of her demise. Her marriage to Philander Cross took place on June 15, 1845. She had been a resident of Indiana for 86 years. Surviving her are two children, B.F. Cross, of Waterford, with whom she made her home, and Mrs. William Gregg, of Longmont, Cal; 10 grand-children, 18 great-grand-children and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will take place at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the home of B.F. Cross at Waterford, with a Christian Science service. Burial will take place in Pine Lake cemetery.

Cuff, Marie (Quigley) - LaPorte Herald-Argus; 27 August 1941   (died due to injuries from a car accident)    Note: this is my great-grandmother Mrs. Marie Cuff, age 45, of 1024 1/2 Lincoln Way, died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the home after an illness of four days. The daughter of Patrick and Christine Quigley, she was born in LaPorte on Aug. 5, 1896. She was married in 1913 to Michael Cuff. Mrs. Cuff was a member of St. Joseph's Church. Surviving are her husband, Michael; five daughters, two sons, and one grandson. Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph's church at 9 o'clock Thursday morning, the Rev. A.C. Van Rie officiating. The body may be viewed at the A.J. Reiser funeral home until the time of the funeral. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery.

Culvahouse, Carl Eugene - Michigan City News Dispatch July 14, 1950    Carl Eugene Culvahouse, 8, son of Mr & Mrs Arden Culvahouse, R. R. 1 Hamlet, was instantly killed about 12:40 P.M. today when struck by a truck driven by Donald M. Fredenburg, 18, R. R. 3, this city. Fredenburg, traveling west on U.S. 6 about 1/2 mile west of the intersection of U.S. 6 and 35 is employed by Woodruff and Son. Three witnesses reported that the boy had crossed the road to take mail from a mail box in front of his home and then darted out in front of the truck which was traveling about 30 mph. Other details of the accident are incomplete. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Cummins, Hetty  - LaPorte Weekly Argus, Sept 29 1881    Mrs. Hetty Cummins, one of the old settlers of Galena twp., who has been sick so long, died Sept. 20. The immediate cause of her death was paralysis. Burial in Foster Cemetery.

Cummings, Vinton B. - Michigan City News, December 26, 1917, page 8, col 3    V.B. Cummings Dead - Former Well Known Resident of Michigan City Died Friday
   V.B. Cummings, a former well known resident of Michigan City and for many years a foreman in the Haskell and Barker Car shops here, died Friday at his home in Laporte. The funeral services were held this morning. The Laporte Herald gave the following in connection with his passing away:
Vincent B. Cummings who during all his life had resided in this county and for the past 11 years lived in Laporte, passed away at 9 o'clock this morning at his home at 801 Jackson street. He had been in poor health for about 15 years and for the past 12 weeks had been bedfast. Mr. Cummings was born in 1857 at Hatch's Mills and was the son of William H. and Hettie B. Cummings. He was married 40 years ago the 5th of March at New Buffalo, Mich., to Miss Josie M. Billings by whom he is survived. He was a member of the Royal Arcanum; Haleyon Council, Michigan City, and belonged to the Methodist church. Mr. Cummings was a man of excellent character and held in high esteem by a large circle of friends. For 23 years he was a foreman in the Haskell and Barker Car Works at Michigan City. For a time after coming to Laporte he was employed at the Masonic Temple. Besides the wife, he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Daisy Belle Thaldorf of Chicago, and two granddaughters, Blanche and Gladys, the former being a resident in the Cummings home here. The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the home, Rev. A.T. Briggs, officiating and the internment will be in the Foster cemetery at Hatch's Mills.

Curtis, Mrs. Rebecca - La Porte Daily Herald Friday, Oct. 20, 1916   MORTUARY RECORD-----Mrs Rebecca Curtis, who was found dead in her home at 308 Clement street yesterday afternoon, was born in Virginia 82 years ago. She came to La Porte 50 years ago and since that time had made her home in this city. The survivors are a brother, Frank Thompson of Westville; a daughter, Mrs. Lafayette Steele of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska; and a son, James W. Curtis of La Porte. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at Cutler's undertaking parlors. Rev. Arthur Smith of the Baptist church will officiate and burial will take place at Pine Lake. Coroner Walkinshaw's verdict as to the cause of death was Endocarditis.
