Eaton, William - 27 Nov 1904    Mr. William Eaton was born in Giles County, Virginia, January 12, 1822 and died Nov 27, 1904, aged 82 years, 10 months and 15 days. He came with his parents to LaPorte County, Ind., in October 1834. His father, John Eaton, was a native of Ireland. He had five brothers, Joseph, Thomas L. Samuel L., Charles G., and James, and four sisters, Nancy, Catherine, Susanna and Elizabeth. He was married Apr. 23, 1857 to Mary Morrison and was blessed with six children. Mrs. D.A.Wells, Mrs. J.J. Belshe, John, William, and Henry E. of Sundance, Wyoming, Lillian Victoria, deceased, and Mary Inez of Union Mills, Ind. The wife of the deceased Sept 22, 1902. Mr. Eaton was a member of the M.E. church in Union Mills and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He leaves a host of friends to mourn their loss, because a sincere Christian and a good citizen has passed from our midst.

Ebeck, Frank John - LaPorte Herald-Argus 11 July 1977    "Frank John Ebeck, 76, of 4101N CR 50W, died Sunday at 5:45 a.m. at his home. He was born April 22, 1901 in La Porte to William and Bertha (Ludwig) Ebeck, and had lived here his entire life. Mr. Ebeck was retired as an employee of Modine Manufacturing Company, and was also owner of the Ebeck Garden Center. He was married April 26, 1928 in La Porte to Isabelle Daniels. Mr. Ebeck was a member of the Modine Retired Club. Surviving are his wife; two nieces and one nephew. One daughter, two brothers, and one sister all preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Haverstock chapel with Jerry Crow officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today and Tuesday until time of services."

Ebeck, Isabelle (Daniels) -Obituary - LaPorte Herald-Argus 2 December 1983    ISABELLE EBECK "Mrs. Isabelle Daniels Ebeck, 81, of 4101N CR-50W, LaPorte, died Sunday, Dec. 4, at 8:15 p.m. at LaPorte Hospital. She was born Feb. 15, 1902, in Black Hawk, Colo., to Mathias and Anna (Holtz) Daniels and had lived here most of her life. She was a member of the LaPorte Presbyterian Church where she was a teacher and secretary for the Sunday school for many years. She had retired from the LaPorte County courthouse. On April 26, 1928, in LaPorte, she married Frank J. Ebeck who died July 10, 1977. Surviving are one niece and several cousins. The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Dr. W. William Wimberly officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and until the time of services Wednesday. Burial will be Pine Lake Cemetery."

Egelske, "Silver" - May 1912    His full name was Sylvester Xaviery Egelske. He was born 4 March 1901 and died 10 May 1912. Cause of death: tonsilitis. He had 13 siblings, two of whom, Walter and Rose are also buried at St. Mary's. His parents were John and Mary Ann Egelske.

Ehmke, Caroline - SAINT JOHN'S CEMETRY, LAPORTE - Herald Argus Saturday 30 Jun 1923; MRS. CAROLINE EHMKE - Mrs. Caroline Ehmke, aged 60 years, died Saturday evening at 10 o'clock at her home 701 F. St., after an illness of eight years.
  She is survived by her husband, Henry Ehmke, Sr., three children, Mrs. Albert Hofstettes and Henry F. Ehmke, of LaPorte, and Mrs. Max Kramp, of Cleveland, OH, and eight grandchildren.
  Mrs. Ehmke was born on June 16, 1862, in Mecklenburg Warren, Germany and came to this country 36 years ago. On November 21, 1886 she was married to Henry Ehmke. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran church. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, a short service to be conducted first at the residence at 2 p.m. and a more formal services at St. John's Lutheran church at 2:30 p.m. Rev Paul Richstaedt will officiate. Ehmke, Henry - Herald Argus Tuesday, Nov 3, 1953 - HENRY EHMKE - Henry Ehmke, 89, of Grand Avenue and State Road 2, died at 5:35 yesterday afternoon at the hom of his son, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Ehmke, after a week's illness.
  He was born Dec. 29, 1863 in Mechlenburg, Germany. He had lived here for 68 years, coming from Germany. Mr. Ehmke was married in 1885 in LaPorte to Caroline Schiede. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church. Survivors include one son, Henry F. Ehmke; nine grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock Funeral home. The Rev. Manfred E. Reinke will officiate. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran cemetery. Ehrich, Martha - New Dispatch - Michigan City, IN - 7/16/1997    Martha Ehrick LaPORTE - Martha A. Ehrick, 90, LaPorte, died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday (July 15, 1997) at the Countryside Place Nursing Home, LaPorte. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaPorte. The Rev. Ted Nordquist will officiate. Burial will follow at the Door Village Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Essling Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. today, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7 p.m. today. Mrs. Ehrick was born March 28, 1907, in LaPorte, to Peter and Agnes Tesmer Pliska. On June 26, 1926, in LaPorte, she married Leo W. Ehrick who died on Jan. 29, 1983. Survivors include one son, Robert J. Ehrick, Chesterton; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Weikel and Delores Sweeney, both of LaPorte; one brother, Frank Pliska, LaPorte, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ehrick was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Parker, and a brother, Peter Pliska. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Eichstaedt, Albert C.   -LaPorte Herald-Argus -- 15 Dec 1948 -   Albert C. Eichstaedt, Hanna, died at 1:40 this mornign at the Holy Family hospital after an illness of one year. He was born in Cass township on April 30, 1875, and had lived in Hanna all his life. He was married in April 1900, to Augusta Monthey (Manthey) of Wanatah. He was a member of the Lutheran church of Hanna. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Clara Kuehn, Hanna, two sons, Leo and Clarence, of Hanna, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, two brothers Emil, LaCrosse and Edwin of Glenwood, Calif. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 at the Hanna Lutheran church, with the Rev. A. Kuster of Wanatah officiating. Friends may call at the home tommorrow afternoon. Eichstaedt, Ella L. - Obituary LaPorte Herald-Argus 25 March 2001    Ella L. Eichstaedt, 90, Walkerton and formerly of Hanna, died at 4:50 p.m. Saturday (March 24, 2001) at Miller's Merry Manor, Walkerton. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church of Hanna, with the Rev. Merlin Bray officiating. Burial will be in Hanna Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Eichstaedt was born March 9, 1911, in Hanna, to Adolph and Emma (Sacks) Gross. On March 28, 1942, in Wanatah, she married Clarence E. Eichstaedt. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1982. Surviving are a daughter, Marlene Bechinski, La Porte; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; and two nieces and a nephew. A daughter, Karen Berker, and five sisters, Violet Gross, Bertha Welch, Emma Eichstaedt, Carrie Acton and Mae Kneisley, all preceded her in death. Mrs. Eichstaedt was a homemaker. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Hanna and the Ladies Aid of the First Lutheran Church of Hanna."

Ele - Pearl R. Ele - News Dispatch - Michigan City, IN , 72, Union Mills, died Tuesday (March 10, 1998) at Holy Cross Hospital, Chicago. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. Richard Rife officiating. Burial will be in Union Mills Cemetery, Union Mills. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and until the time of service Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Ele was born Nov. 15, 1925, in Grant Park, Ill., the daughter of Emery and Frieda Kohlscheen Heldt. She later married Lester Ele, who died in August 1983. Surviving are two daughters, Paula (Michael) Ele Freeman, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Debra (Greg Putz-fiance) Allie, LaPorte; a son, Ronald Ele, Union Mills; a grandson, Darren Allie, LaPorte; two sisters, Edna Snell, Dorothy Edmonds, both of Crown Point, Ind.; and a brother, Morris Heldt, Cedar Lake, Ind. Mrs. Ele was a co-owner with her husband for 33 years of the Les and Pearl’s Tavern, Union Mills. She was a member of the American Legion Post 295 Auxiliary, Union Mills, and the LaPorte County Tavern Owners Association.

Eley - - MARY MABLE ELEY, Died 13 Oct 1891 Three years old Mary Mable Eley died of the croup and pneumonia on Oct. 13, 1891. She was born on May 14, 1888, to Mr. & Mrs. Charles Eley. Hannah Eley was Mary’s grandmother. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City, Ind. in the Hannah Eley burial plot.

Elliott, George W. -Michigan City News, Michigan City, IN , Wed. 1 Feb. 1899, p5, c5    The funeral of Geo. W. Elliott, whose death at the home of Robert Hanson, trustee of Springfield township, was noted by THE NEWS Monday; was held at 4 Tuesday afternoon from A. F. Earl's undertaking rooms. Rev. J. S. Hoagland, of the First M. E. church, conducted the services. The remains were interred in Greenwood cemetery. The death of Mr. Elliott was due to pneumonia, with which he was ill eight days. He was 67 years old and leaves a wife and six adult children. Mr. Elliott resided in Laporte until two months ago, when he went to work for Mr. Hanson in the latter's mill. Mrs. Elliott has been living with a sister in Cincinnati for the past few months. The children consist of three daughters and three sons, the latter being Warren and Gordon Elliott of Indianapolis; and Geo. Elliott of Minneapolis. The Messrs. Elliott, of Indianapolis were here to attend their father's funeral.

Elliott, Hannah (Tabor)    - The Daily Herald, Wednesday, August 14, 1895    "Mrs. Hannah Elliot, mother of Mrs. George Martin, of Three Oaks, died at the home of her daughter with whom she resided. Her funeral was held in the M.E. church at Three Oaks and the remains were laid at rest in the Foster cemetery. Aunt Hannah Elliott was an early settler and we remember many kinds acts of hers in times of sickness, when the country was new, away back in 1835 and '40, when she was a resident of Galena.    " The Daily Herald, Friday, Aug 16 1895
"The Mrs. Elliott spoken of before died Friday at her daughter's, Mrs. George Martin's, at Three Oaks. Funeral Sunday. She was brought to the Foster cemetery and laid beside her husband, Alfonso Elliott. Her maiden name was Tabor. She was seventy-seven years old. She had only this daughter living. The other had passed on before. She leaves three sisters and one brother. There are not many of the old settlers left."

ERBS, August - AUGUST GUSTAVE ERBS,   Died 09 Oct 1947   August Gustave Erbs, 81, 233 McClelland, died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, in St. Anthony Hospital, following a one-week illness. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, in the Hummer Mortuary. Rev. A. P. Hardt will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary Friday afternoon, evening and Saturday. Mr. Erbs was born Nov. 22, 1865, in Germany, the son of Frederick and Fredericka Erbs. He was married in Germany, Oct. 19, 1890, to Bertha Beneka, who survives. He came to Michigan City, Ind. in 1893. In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son, Paul Erbs, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Frieda Voss, this city, and five grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Helen Lang, died in February. Mr. Erbs was a member of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church.

Erickson, Larry Allen - La Porte Herald-Argus 9-20-1954    Larry Allen Erickson, four year-old son of John and Joan Erickson, 1410 Kingsport lane, died at 11:30 yesterday morning at the Holy Family hospital. He had been ill most of his life. Larry was born in LaPorte June 26, 1950. He is survived by his parents: two sisters, Shirley Ann and Diane, both at home; two brothers, John, Jr., and Robert, both at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Loran McCormick, Rolling Prairie. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow with the Rev. Wilbur H. Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Rolling Prairie cemetery. Friends may call at the Haverstock chapel tonight and until time of services.

Erickson, Amanda Christine Ferger - Possibly Herald Argus, LaPorte, IN Obituary - 11-7-1944    Mrs. Amanda Erickson, 47, wife of John Erickson of Michigan City, died at 1:10 yesterday afternoon after an illness of five years. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ferger, she was born in Indianapolis on May 21, 1897, and had lived here for 20 years. She was married to John Erickson on Feb. 25, 1925. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, one son, John Jr., and one brother, Fred Ferger, of Waukegan, IL. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Haverstock Chapel with the Rev. V. E. Squibb officiating. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery. Friends may call tomorrow noon at the chapel and until time of funeral.

Erickson, John Alvid   - Obit for John Alvid Erickson - on or about 5-31-50 (burial date)    John Alvid Erickson, Sr., of 1701 Monroe Street died Thursday night at his home. He was 59. Mr. Erickson was born in Sweden, Dec. 29, 1890 and lived here 20 years after coming from Sweden. He was an employee of the Joy Manufacturing Company, Sullivan division. On Feb. 25, 1925 he married Amanda Ferger in Indianapolis. Mr. Erickson was a member of the Baptist Church, Moose, Eagles, and a veteran of World War I. He is survived by a son, John George Erickson, Jr., of La Porte, a granddaughter, three brothers and five sisters in Sweden. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 at the Haverstock chapel directed by the Rev. Wilbur H. Dickerson. Burial will be at Patton Cemetery.

He was born here Oct. 26, 1930 and had lived here all his life. He belonged to the Baptist Church. He is survived by his father, John Erickson; one brother, John, Jr., and two grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Erickson of Sweden. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the O. M. Haverstock chapel, the Rev. Stanley Johnson officiating, with burial at the Patton Cemetery. The body may be viewed at the chapel from tomorrow noon until time for the services.

Erickson, Ruth Caroline - Patton Cemetery, Cresent Bluff Infant Section, Row #14    Ruth Caroline Erickson, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Erickson, 310 B street, passed away at 11:05 last night at the home after an illness of three days of pneumonia. The child was four weeks old. She was born on April 5. Surviving are the parents; two brothers, Robert and John, Jr., at home; three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Erickson of Sweden, and Mrs. Lottie Ferger of Waukegan, IL. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Haverstock chapel. The Rev. F. G. Kenney will officiate and burial will be in Patton Cemetery with O. M. Haverstock in charge. The body may be viewed from 4 p.m. today until the time of the funeral tomorrow at the Haverstock chapel.

ESPY,WILLIAM - - WILLIAM L. ESPY, Died 24 Jan 1928 Following an illness of one month, William L. Espy, 216 Miller Street, died at 6 o’clock today of complications. He was born in Hobart, Ind., on March 30, 1850. Mrs. Espy died April 14, 1913. One grandson, Harry N. Peo, of this city, is the only surviving relative. Funeral services will take place on Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Ott Chapel. The Rev. E. J. Egly, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate, and interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Etherington, Richard - History of LaPorte County, Chapman's 1880 p. 701    Richard Etherington was born in 1810 in Winchester county, England, and is the son of Richard and Elizabeth Etherington, natives also of the same county. He moved to America in 1832, stopping a short time in New York State, then to Ohio, then, in 1836, to Illinois, and finally to this county, locating at LaPorte. He came to this tp. in 1840, settling on sec. 27, where he has ever since lived, but is at present on sec. 34. In 1833 he married Miss Elizabeth Thorn, who was born in England in 1814, and they have had 11 children, 4 of whom are living: Eliza, Jane, Edmund and Mary. Mrs. E. died about 1850, and the next year Mr. E. married Mahala Clark, who was born in New York State in 1813, and they had one child. Mrs. E. died in 1852, and the next year Mr. E. married Lucy Perry, who was born in New Hampshire. Mr. Etherington commenced in life poor, but he now owns 1,400 acres of land, two houses and lots in Rolling Prairie, and has given his children about $20,000. He has never gone to school, but has education enough for business. P.O., Rolling Prairie.

EVENBURG, HENRY, SR. - Michigan City Evening News - Tuesday, January 5, 1909   HENRY EVENBURG, SR. -
Henry Evenburg Sr., an old resident of this city and vicinity, died Monday, (Jan 4, 1909) evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Hampton, 110 Holliday Street. Deceased was aged 82 years, 4 months and 17 day, and his death was caused by rheumatism and complications due to old age.
  Mr. Evenburg was a native of Hanover, Germany. He came to this country when a young man, and has been a resident of this county for many years. He was formerly a resident of Coolspring township where he owned and operated a farm for many years. He lost his wife some 20 years ago, while a resident of Coolspring township.
  He is survived by his children as follows: One stepson, Isaac McGuigan of Door Village; four sons, John Evenburg, this city, Henry Evenburg, Durham Station; Edward Evenburg, Elgin, ILL., and Edwin Evenburg, LaPorte, and three daughters, Mrs. James (Laura) Hampton, this city; Mrs. Addie Hatfield, Mishawaka, and Mrs. Lizzie Lucas, Tracy, this state.
  The funeral will be held at 10 o’clock Thursday morning from the home, of the deceased’s daughter, Mrs. James Hampton, 110 Holliday Street. Dean F. E. Aitkins, of Trinity cathedral will officiate. Interment will take place in Lowe cemetery. Submitted by: Laura J. Heckman.

EVENBURG, SARAH JANE - Michigan City Evening Dispatch - Wednesday, November 9, 1887
MRS. EVENBURG, (Sarah Jane) died last Wednesday (Nov. 2, 1887). It will be remembered she had a stroke of paralysis a short time ago, from which she partially recovered, so much so that her friends entertained hopes of her being spared to them some time yet. It soon became evident that she was failing, and she grew gradually worse until the end. She leaves a husband and nine children to mourn her loss…Burial in Lowe Cemetery. Contributed by: Laura J. EVORY, OBADIAH – unknown La Porte newspaper, 14 August 1909    After lying in a comatose state since last Sunday, breathing but apparently unconscious of all about him. Obadiah Evory passed away last night at 9:20 o’clock at the home of his son, Gilbert Evory. Mr. Evory had been in feeble health for several months with a complication of diseases. He was born September 27, 1831, at Catskill, N. Y., coming to this city in 1878. He was married December 24, 1842 at Rolling Prairie to Miss Margaret Jane Provolt who died eight years ago. Mr. Evory before his retirement from business life was a very successful contractor, having built the Odd Fellows and Ruth C. Sabin home and other buildings in the city. He was a member of the First Christian church, also Excelsior lodge, F. And A. M. Rev. Clarke R. Parker, pastor of the Baptist church will officiate at the services, which will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 o’clock at the Evory home 805 Linwood Avenue. The Masonic fraternity will be in charge. The internment will take place at the Rolling Prairie cemetery under the direction of Austin Cutler. Mr. Evory leaves seven children; Charles, John, and Miss Laura Evory, of Chicago; Mrs. E. E. Reese, of Rolling Prairie; and Gilbert, Gurdon and Miss Susan Evory, this city

Ewald, Peter Christian – LaPorte Daily Herald, Monday May 14, 1894    Peter Christian Ewald was born in Germany, February 14, 1825, and came to this country in 1854. In 1862 he was married to Martha Elizabeth Ginder, nine children being born to them, five sons and four daughters. He departed this life May 8, 1894 aged 69 years, 2 months and 22 days. All but one of the children was at home. Mr. Delcamp preached the funeral sermon, assisted by Mr. Mathews. Burial at Springville.
