Joseph Riechel and Associated Familes
Study notes

Joseph Riechel appears to be the son of Frank Riechel and his wife Mariane- Both born about 1822 in Prussia

It appears that the family arrived August 17, 1858 on board the ship Ottilie. Manifest shows the spelling of the surname as Richel.
On board are Frank and his wife, Mariane, both aged 36, Joseph aged 10 and Anna aged 6 years.
Port they departed from was Bremen, Germany and arrived in New York harbor, with destination on passenger list as Indiana.

On the 1860 census, along with his parents, all living in Michigan City are his younger sibling sisters Anna and Sarina.

Records at St. Mary's Catholic Church for a
Wedding of - Joseph Richel and Pauline Zahrt on 20 June 1871. The records I have go to 1883. It appears that Joseph may have been married 3 times. First to Pauline which baptismal records show him having 2 children with her. Then in 1878 & 1881 he had children with Bertha Koselke. In 1882, 84, 86, 88 & 92 children with Catherine Niegdzinska - Negochinska - Negochinski.
Per Patricia Gruse Harris

Joseph 3rd marriage is to Niegobinski and his as Reohol with a date of 28 Sep 1881 - per wpa listing.

If anyone is searching additional information on this family, it can be quite challenging as the names have been slaughtered in some of the census.

1880 Census, LaPorte, Co , Coolspring Twp. Name is shown as Bechal:
Thomas & Bertha with two small children.
May born abot 1878 and Joseph Jr. born March 1879.

1900 Census - same county - but living in Michigan Township -
shows Joseph and wife Katherine Children
( Joseph Jr. is living with the Anna Zahrt family- she's the widow of August Zahrt - previously wed - October 23, 1867. Anna is the sister of Joseph Riechel Sr.)

in Joseph and Katherine's house are:
Teresa b. Sep 1882 - she later wed Anthony Yanke in LaPorte Co., in 1907
Alexander b. Feb, 1884
Theodore Feb 1886
Bernard Aug 1888
William June 1892
Julius Jan 1896
Henry April 1890

1910 Census lists most of the above with the exception of Theordore, I believe he has moved out and living with wife Viola (Burkart) whom he wed in 1908. They divorce and then some time later they both remarry.
In 1910 One addition to the Joseph and Katherine family is
Frances born circa 1902 The name on the census is misspelled again -- this time it appears as Richel

All are buried in Calvary Cemetery within Greenwood Cemetery.

it appears that Joanne Niegosinski and Joanna Wentland were either the witnesses or the parents. I am not sure of my Latin
"I have a marriage in ST. Mary's Catholic Church for a Joseph Richel and Pauline Zahrt on 20 June 1871. The records I have at home only go to 1883. The "a" at the end of the name is the usual feminine ending. the records I have at home only go to 1893. I checked for a record of his marriage to Bertha and Catherine, but there was none in the church records for St. Marys. There is a possibility he was married in another Catholic church to which the wife belonged, but his children were baptized in his parish, which was the custom. The wife joined the parish of the husband. It is possible Catherine belonged to St. Mary's Church in Otis or Sacred Heart in Wanatah or even a parish in the city of La Porte."

Found in Calvary Cemetery Records, Michigan City, IN
Joseph Richel paid $10.00 for Lot. #43 in Block #4 on May 21, 1872. That is the same date Anthony was born to Joseph and Pauline Zahrt. There is no other information. Perhaps Pauline and maybe Anthony died at childbirth? Franz Riechel paid $10.00 for Lot #36 in Block #3 on Dec. 4, 1890. No other information. He also purchase Lot. #37 14 Sept. 1890 but later sold it to Wm. Kinzle.
Jos. J. Riechel is listed as the owner of Lot. 40, Sec. "M". No other information. It is too cold and too much snow to check these locations out in the possibility and that Pauline and/or Bertha might be buried on one of them, or just who is.
