The James Williams Family of La Porte County, Indiana
Before & After

Compiled by Deanna Branson West
with Assistance from John Claussen

The following is comprised of Family Trees, Death Certificates, Cemetery Records, Census Reports and various land claims. We show a very brief synopsis of the family before arriving in La Porte County and basically concentrated on those that remained in the area. When researching this family, one should keep in mind that Berrien Co., Michigan is just to the north of this county and St. Joseph Co., IN is to the east just a few miles from Galena and Kankakee twps in La Porte County, IN.

James Williams was born 2 Jul 1810 in the "Poor Valley" in Washington Co, Virginia north of Abingdon. He was the son of George Williams and Nancy Newhouse. When only one year old, James' family crossed the Appalachian Mountains across the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky, then northward crossing the Ohio River into Franklin County, Indiana, and eventually settled in Fayette County, Indiana.

James married Mary (Cooley) Williams 28 Oct 1830 in Columbia, Fayette Co, Indiana. They moved to Kankakee township, La Porte County, Indiana by 1831 with Mary's Cooley and the Snodgrass family.

Mary's father John Cooley born 1784 purchased land 15 Mar 1837 in La Porte Co, IN and died there in January 1845, and her mother Martha (Snodgrass) Cooley (born 1785 VA) died in La Porte Co in December 1849 (per the 1850 Fed. Morality Schedule for La Porte County.)

From 1837 to about 1842, James' uncle Samuel Newhouse lived nearby in Galena Twp, La Porte County, Indiana. He purchased land in this county 30 March 1837.

The Williams would later establish themselves and some of the offspring would remain in this county all of their lives.
James and Mary Williams were recorded in Fayette County, Indiana Probate Court on Christmas Day 1844, following the death of James' father George Williams that November. James was listed as an "heir-at-law" of George Williams estate, and sold his inheritance share of property in Fayette County.

After marriage, James and Mary moved to La Porte Co, Indiana in 1831, and remained there until the early 1860s, when they moved to Barry Co, Michigan. Mary died in Yankee Springs in Mar 1870. James and Mary's farm was adjacent to Coman Cemetery in early 1870s, and from family history are known to be buried together in Coman Cemetery, no markers for graves.  James remarried Elisabeth Betsie Briggs from New York in Sept 1873 - Betsie died 1881 in Irving, Barry, MI. James died in Wayland, Allegan, Michigan the 22 Dec 1891; presumably at the residence of his daughter Sarah H Williams Shay.

James and Mary's farm was located approximately "catty-corner" to Coman Cemetery in early 1870s, and from family history are known to be buried together in Coman Cemetery, although there are no markers.

Along with James Williams and Mary Cooley's three sons (George, Benj. and Charles) and four son-in-laws also served in the Civil War in Indiana and Michigan (compiled by John R. Keith). James William's father, George Williams, served during the War of 1812 with the Indiana 7th Regiment Militia under the commend of Capt. Elliott Herndon of Franklin Co., IN when James was yet a young boy. George Williams service records are at the Indiana State Library. It is possible that George Williams is buried at Columbia Cemetery in Colombia, Fayette, IN near the Williams farm- further evidence of this location still to be proven.
