Brother of Lyle, Harold Wellwood, who died Dec. 15, 2005, was not only a veteran in service 10/1942-6/1946 -Harold (Eifler) Wellwood was an Army Air Corps Pilot (B-24 Liberator) in the Pacific in World War 2. His plane was shot down over China by the Japanese on July 17, 1945. After parachuting safely down, Harold and two of his crew were captured by the Japanese. They were Japanese POWs in 'Bridge House Jail' in China. They were reported MIA, but were recovered alive at the end of the war. Other crew members were found by Chinese guerrillas and gotten out of China. One member was shot by the Japanese when he landed. All but one crew member (who refused to be captured) survived and were returned home after the war. Harold was almost born in LaPorte, but his parents moved to Los Angelses, CA before he was born. His father died in the 1918 Spanish Influenza Epidemic so grandma retured to LaPorte with the three kids. Part of the time he lived with his grandfather, Ephraim Wellwood in LaPorte.

Notes for ROYAL ADELBERT WELLWOOD:

Buried in 1919 at Pine Lake Cemetary in LaPorte, Indiana

He died from Spanish Influenza in the great epidemic in Los Angeles County Hospital. Because so many people were dying, his name was misspelled on his death certificate; it shows Willwood instead of the proper spelling of Wellwood; info on death certificate was given by a neighbor so much of the info is wrong.. His wife was very ill herself, so his body was placed in a vault in Los Angeles, CA until she recovered and was able to accompany his body back home for burial in LaPorte, Indiana many months after his death. Body was moved from Los Angeles, CA to LaPorte, Indiana for burial on March 18, 1919 per death certificate.

Death Certificate shows his address in Los Angeles as 527 Eagle Rock Ave.,Los Angeles, CA. We believe there is a digit missing from the address and it should be 527? Eagle Rock Ave. (now called Eagle Rock Blvd. in Eagle Rock, Calif. My Dad, Royal's son, remembers that the house was near Colorado Blvd. and within walking distance of the Eagle Rock. The area was then called Annandale.

8. ROBERT WELLWOOD86,87,88, born 1812 in County Carlow, Ireland89; died June 02, 1875 in Three Oaks, Michigan90. He was the son of 16. ROBERT WELLWOOD and 17. MARY or ALICE UNKNOWN. He married 9. CATHARINE SARAH DECLUTE February 05, 1839 in Old St. Paul's Church, Chatham, Ontario, Canada91.

9. CATHARINE SARAH DECLUTE92,93, born November 08, 1820 in Raleigh, Ontario Canada94; died May 25, 1903 in Three Oaks, Michigan. She was the daughter of 18. JEREMIAH DECLUTE and 19. Sarah Unknown.

Notes for ROBERT WELLWOOD:

Baptized Jan. 1841 Anglican Church, Richibucto, Kent, New Brunswick, Canada

According to the Index to Crown Land First Patentees, Kent, County, Ontario, Canada, Robert Wellwood acquired 100 acres in the Northerly half of Lot 3, Concession 11 in Raleigh Township on March 31, 1844.

There is a record of a Robert Wellwood contributing the required days of labour to the building of roads in the Township from 1839-1847. Since Robert Wellwood, Sr. would have been over 60 years old in 1839 and labour was only required from those 16 to 60 years of age, this probably refers to Robert Jr.

Per records St. Paul's Church, Chatham:

Robert Wellwood of the township of Raleigh, Bachelor, yeoman and Catherine Declute of the same township, Spinster, were married after publication of Banns by me Feb'ry the 5th 1839. Signed - T.B. Fuller, witnessed by Wm. Boulton & Thos. Tiffin

In the records of the Raleigh Township Collector's Rolls, Kent County, Canada, for 1852 there is no mention of Robert and his family, likewise in the census of 1871 & 1881 and we know that Robert's son, Ephraim was in the United States in 1862. Therefore, sometime between 1847 and 1862 Robert & his family moved out of Kent County and down into the United States. It is possible that Robert's father went with them. Later finding is that Robert moved to Three Oaks, Mi in 1850.

Found record of Robert Wellwood in the 1870 Census Index for Three Oaks, Berrien County, Michigan, page 436.

Per 1870 Census records Robert Wellwood was 58 yrs. old, making him born in 1812, shows he was born in Ireland. It shows he was a farmer. Value of Real Estate shows $400.00, value of Personal Estate shows $500.00. Catharine shows 48 yrs. old, born in Canada, show her occupation as keeps house.

In addition, it shows them having 4 additional children in the house that we did not know about.

Sarah age 19, Henrietta age 17, Evanetta age 10 and Henry age 9. All 4 of these childrens' birthplaces show as Michigan. Shows Robert & Catharine as their parents.

Michigan Genealogical Death Indexing System shows his death as June 2, 1875, age 66 years & 1 month; died Three Oaks, Berrien, MI; male, white, married, farmer, birthplace-Ireland; cause of death-injury of lungs; Father's Name- Daniel???,(all prior records show his father's name as Robert?) father's residence-Irland; Mother's Name- Anna Wellwood, mother's residence-Ireland; date of this record May 31, 1876.

More About ROBERT WELLWOOD:

Burial: Unknown, Forest Lawn Cemetery, Three Oaks, MI

Notes for CATHARINE SARAH DECLUTE:

Some records show Catherine spelled Catharine. Also, some Declute is D'clute and DeClute and D'Cloute.

Baptized April 30, 1822, St. John's Anglican Church, Windsor (Sandwich), Essex County, Ontario, Canada.

Moved to Three Oaks, MI in 1850.

Catherine's name still appears in the 1880 Berrien County Census Records, but Robert's name does not appear.

Obituary states "Being an excellent nurse she had been called to every home of the old settlers of this vicinity.."

OBITUARY-The Weekly News, Wednesday, April 19, 1899

UNCLE JOHN NO MORE

PASSING AWAY OF JOHN DYSARD AGED NINETY YEARS.

Death Came to Him Peacefully and Suddenly-One of the Oldest residents in the County-Came Here in 1837.

Uncle John Dysard, as he is familiarly known, one of the oldest and best known residents in the county, died at his boarding house, 123 East Michigan Street, Sunday afternoon about 2 o'clock. Mr. Dysard passed peacefully to rest without a struggle, his demise being more the effects of old age than of any affliction of disease. The services were well attended by friends of the family and the old acquaintances of Mr. Dysard and were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.O. Leeds, on Spring Street. Dr. L.T. Cole, of Trinity Church, officiated, and the services were beautiful and impressive. The following persons served as pallbearers: Messrs. Joseph Oliver, Wm. Blinks, V. W. Bartholomew, W.H. Davis, Robt. Curran and C.T. Dibble.

Uncle John Dysard was a native of Dublin, Ireland, where he was born June 15, 1808, and had he lived until next June he would have been 91 years of age. He came to America in 1833 stopping in New York. In 1837 he came to this county with the corps of engineers, surveying the line of the Lake Shore road. He located in Michigan City, Indiana at that time and has ever since been a resident of this city and vicinity. He was well known all over the county.

Mr. Dysard was married in 1838 to Miss Esther Turner, of this city, who departed this life some fifteen years ago. To the union were born 12 children, seven of whom survive their father. The children are Mrs. E. Smith, of Idaho; Mrs. W.O. Leeds of this city, John, of South Dakota, James and Alexander, both residing near this city;

Joseph , of Kingsbury, and Mrs. Jerry Ridgeway, living at Laporte.

Mr. Dysard was a well known resident of the county, being in his early days an active worker in the affairs of the county. He was a well read man and kept pace with the news of th day not only locally but with state and national affairs. He was possessed of a remarkable memory and was a veritable living encyclopedia upon matters of public interest. He was of a genial disposition, always good natured, had a joke at his tongue's end at any time and enjoyed receiving a joke as well as passing one. He was an honorable, conscientious man, a warm friend ang a good citizen. He was a member of the Episcopal church.

John Dysard was born June 15, 1808 and died April 16, 1899 - see obituary on Greenwood Cemetery site.

Ref 1: by Esther DySard Wilson Letter on January 11, 1977 -

John Dysard arrived in the LaPorte County about 1837. Family lore states that John was born in a town across the bay from Edenburg, Scotland called Dysart but his obituary states that John was born in Dublin Ireland.

Esther writes: "John landed in Detroit, when that town had a population of 2200 people. While working as a surveyor John came through Michigan City with the Michigan Central Railroad. He purchased land in Illinois at Fort Sheridan now known as Chicago. He bought 40 acres of land where the Marshall Field's big store is now. Come spring he saw it was just a swampland. He traded it for a team of oxen and wagon; lost them in a fog which is now Gary, Ind., came on to Michigan City and settled on the old Dysard homestead as we know it today."

In a 1966 study done by Gene McDonald, states that John arrived around 1834 again refer to obituary on Greenwood Cemetery site.

John married Esther Ann Turner on July 4, 1838. Her name appears as Hester in some documents and census. But obituaries of children show her name as being Esther. In the letters written by Esther Dysard Wilson and Stanley Dysard they mention the following:

Esther Wilson mentions that there were 13 children (John's obituary states that there were 12 children in total) in the John and Esther Dysard family and Stanley Dysard mentions the 5 children of the surviving brothers and sisters that are buried on the old Dysard homestead in LaPorte County. One child which appears in the 1850 census, but then disappears by the 1860 census, is Euphemia. There is no other mention of her in any of the later correspondence as there is the other surviving Dysard children. Esther died January 16, 1883 IN LaPorte County, IN

Russell Hapke in a conversation with Dorothy Pavolka, a descendant of the Pavolka family that purchased the land from Dysards, stated that as a little girl she remembered an old Dysard Cemetery behind the barn on the now existing Pavolka farm on Wozniak Road. She recalled as seeing the area as a little girl and maybe there were about 6 or 7 graves there. However, there were no tombstones and it was just a known family fact. And as late as 1977 the Dysard family knew the location of the graves but no stones were visible. The parents and several of the surviving children were later buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City, when they passed away. But it is clear in the writing of these letters that the burials in the Dysard Cemetery were that of John and Esther's children.

John Dysard is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, LaPorte, IN., Section P, Lot 1, Blk. 25, Grave 1/2 next to his wife.

Notes for Joseph W. Dysard:

Per 1880 US Census Records he was 25 years old, living with his brother, Alexander, and was a farmer, born in Ireland.

His obit reads that he was "the 11th child of John and Ester Dysard. He was reared on a farm and continued that occupation his entire life-time. He had six children, of whom five survive him.

Joseph W. Dysard b. January 1856 he shows as being age 16 in the 1870 census. Then the 1880 shows Joseph living with his brother Alexander and Mary. He married Ida B. Edinger in Porter County 14th November 1889 . She was b. in about March of 1873. The 1900 census shows us that Ida has given birth to 5 children of which 4 are surviving. They are living in Pleasant Township.

Joseph and Ida are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Joseph is shown incorrectly as John W. Dysard. He was 58 and died December 30, 1914. Ida lived several decades past her husband and would die at the age of 86 on June 14, 1958.

Could the reading in Eight Square Cemetery in Porter County be the 5th child? Row 14 Dysard, Chester L. b 5/28/1906 died 2/5/1907, Son of J.W. & G.A. Only more investigation by interested family members may shed some light on this mystery.

Additional note on Lorraine Dysard, Great Great granddaughter of John & Esther Dysard changed the spelling to DySard to make the "S: a capital. She told her nephew Harrison DySard that she got tired of having people think her last name was Dipard which is what it looks like if you write it out.

Chapter on the Wellwood/Wright Farm, p 147-149

Robert Wellwood was born about 1778 and was a native of County Carlow, Ireland. He grew up there and married and his ten children, five sons & five daughters, were born there. They all left Ireland in 1830, when Robert was about 53 years old, bound for Canada. It is not clear if Robert's wife was with them or had already died. It is possible that his wife was Alice Wellwood.

They first settled in Kettle Creek, near Wallacetown, staying there about a year before moving to Raleigh Township, Kent, Ontario,Canada in 1831. The family is considered one of the pioneer families of Raleigh Township. According to the account in the Commemorative Biographical Record of Kent County, Robert started to farm Crown Land on Lot 3, concession 11. According to the account in the Farm Book, the family started farming on Lot 6, concession 11.

The time this family settled in the township pre-dated roads or any improvements and there were no near neighbors although families named Drew and Finlin, who had also lived in the County Carlow in Ireland, settled in the township the next year.

They cleared an area first for a log house, later replaced by another larger house, much later by a large, brick residence.

Robert's oldest son, Samuel, was born in 1799. this date helps to determine Robert's date of birth.

Later in life, Robert moved to Detroit, Michigan, possibly with son Robert and Robert's family (wife Catherine Declute & sons, Robert & Ephraim). Robert is not listed in the Raleigh Township Collector's Rolls, Kent County for 1852 so possibly he had left the county by this date.

Robert Sr. died in Detroit Michigan.

Notes for MARY or ALICE UNKNOWN:

LDS records show a Mary Lodge of Aghaloo, Tyrone, Ireland married to a Robert Wellwood on Jan. 8, 1812. I do not know if she is our ancestor or not.

Per Commemorative Biographical Records of Kent County, Ontario, Canada,

"It is not clear if Robert's wife was with them or had already died when they came to Canada. It is possible that his wife was Alice Wellwood."

Michigan Genealogical Death Indexing System show Robert Wellwood, b 1809, mother's name as Anna, but they also show his father's name as Daniel which we do not believe is correct, so her first name is still unproven.

Children of ROBERT WELLWOOD and MARY UNKNOWN are:

8 i. ROBERT WELLWOOD, born 1812 in County Carlow, Ireland; died June 02, 1875 in Three Oaks, Michigan; married CATHARINE SARAH DECLUTE February 05, 1839 in Old St. Paul's Church, Chatham, Ontario, Canada.

Notes for Samuel Wellwood, Sr.:

Source for the folowing: Commemorative Biographical Record of the County of Kent, Ontario, Canada. J.H. Beers and Co., toronto, 1903

Samuel was the eldest in the family. Immediately upon coming to Raleigh township he took up land in Lot 5, Concession 11. The time that this family settled in the township antedated roads or any improvements and there were no near neighbors, although the Drews and the Finlins, from their oun county in Ireland, settled in the township a year later. Samuel Wellwood first built a log house, some sixty rods east of the present fine brick rresidence, and this was later replacd by another somewhat larger, buty there are no signs of these primitave deelling places upon the handsome premises of Mr. Samuel L. Wellwood now resides (1903).

While residing in Ireland, Samuel (b.1799) Wellwood married Hannah Griffin, who died Sept. 1, 1890. He passed away Aug. 25, 1855. Before emigrating, he served some years in the British Army, and during the Rebellion in 1837, in Canada, he was a volunteer. The news of his brothers death at Windsor so inflamed him that he raised a company, purposing to march upon the locality and avenge his relatives unhappy taking off, but he did not accomplish this. He died in the prime of his life. Only about one-fourth of the farm was cleared before his death, but it was accomplished in due time.

Notes for Hannah Griffin:

Source for the following:Commemorative Biographical record of the County of Kent, Ontario, Canada. by J.H. Beers & Co., Toronto, 1903

Samuel Sr. & Hannah continued to clear the property, but had cleared only one quarter of the farm when Samuel died at the age of 56 in 1855.

Samuel L. was only six years old when his father died. His mother, Hannah, shouldered the task of raising her young family and taking charge of the continuing development of the farm-a truly amazing accomplishment.

Although Hannah married Silas Eaton nine years after she was widowed, records indicate that she kept control of the Wellwood property until her youngest son, Samuel L., was able to take on the responsibility.

Hannah died in 1890 at age 86 yeas, and is buried in St. Patrick's Cemeterybeside her first husband, Samuel Wellwood, Sr.

xi. Alice Wellwood164, born Bef. 1839 in Ireland; died Unknown.

Notes for Alice Wellwood:

"According to the registration of the baptism of Catherine Wellwood (daughter of Samuel) in 1838 (as listed in Old St. Paul's, Chatham, Ontario, Canada, 1829 to 1841) Alice Wellwood was a sponsor, along with Robert Wellwood and Elizabeth Wellwood. I am assuming that Alice & Samuel were siblings.

However, Alice is not listed as one of the children of Robert Wellwood in the Commemorative Biographical Record of Kent County. Also, Elizabeth Wellwood Wallace named one of her daughters Alice, so it is possible that Alice Wellwood is the wife of Robert and the mother of Samuel and his siblings. (need to check census)."

Extrace of letter written by Noah Starr to his nephew in Milton, NY, included in above mentioned book, written from Skaneateles, May 8, 1832:

"I have sold my farm this spring, and have been out to Ohio and bought another. I sold for $33.00 an acre and bought for $10.00 160 acres, about 100 under improvement, and 25 for $4.00 an acre; it is in Greenfield, Ohio, 2 1/2 miles from Epenetus and one from Hoyt's. I expect to start to move there about middle of this month. Our friends there were all well except Hiram Starr; he died when I was there with the consumption. Father has got married again this spring; he went over the other side of the lake for a visit and got married, and brought his wife home before we knew any thing about it. She has the name of being a clever, smart old lady, and about 73 years old. I expect Curtis will live there whilst the old gentleman lives. Phelp's folks are well."

Thomas' son, Epenetus Starr, loved to recall that Danbury, CT, when he was five years old, the town was burned by the British, and yet he distinctly remembered the excitement on the approach of the British army; of his father, taking the family back into the country for safety; of their great anxiety, and the vain hopes that their own home might be spared.

Notes for THOMAS STARR:

Thomas Starr was a farmer.

He married 3 times.

The following from Burgis Pratt Starr in "A History of the Starr Family 1879"

"Thomas Starr lived in Danbury, Ct. In 1749 his grand list was 60 pounds,19. April 5, 1785 and April 21, 1787, he and his son jointly deed land. Did he then remove from Danbury? for I find no record of death, of himself or wife; a maiden daughter is remembered for her benevolence and devotion to the soldiers during the Revolution, and another daughter as a cripple for life by a fall."

"Thomas Starr. There were so many of this name contemporary, in Danbury (in 1790, five at least) that it is difficut to identify the record and history of each individual one; thus "In 1750 a petition was presented to the General Assembly for a new (Ridgbury) Society, in the north part of Ridgefield - a Thomas Starr - says he lives within the bounds of said proposed Parish, protests," etc. - but which one he was I am unable to determine." B.P Starr

Elizabeth's last name may have been Closson or Clason.

The Starr family is one of the original families that settled the Danbury area in 1684/85, coming from the Norwich area. "The first settlers, having purchased their lands of the Indian owners, became proprietors of the town. The town was surveyed in February, 1693, by john Platt and Samuel Hayes, of Norwalk. The survey bill declares the length to be eight miles from north to south, and the breadth six miles from east to west. At the session of the General Assembly in May 1702, a patent was granted, giving town-privilages to the inhabitants and proprietors of Danbury. The patentees named are James Beebe, Thomas Taylor, Samuel Benedict, James Benedict, John Hoyt, and Josiah Starr. In this act, the boundaries were fixed according to the former survey."

Notes for ELIZABETH HICKS:

Some people believe Elizabeth Hicks Starr's mother is Florence Fordham; perhaps she just greatly admired her as a step-mother and named a child after her. She named one of her daughters, Florence after her, and one of her daughters after her husband's mother, Rachel..

Also, one son after her father and one son after her husband's father.

In some material Elizabeth is listed as the daughter of John Hicks & Herodias (Long) Hicks and granddaughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Morgan) Hicks of Plymouth and Duxbury, but this information is questionable..

Notes for JOHN HICKS:

John Hicks, born in 1606, son of Robert and Elizabeth (Morgan) Hicks, early settlers of Plymouth, who, as early as 1640, owned land in the neighborhood of Dr. Comfort Starr's family in Duxbury, at Island Creek, John Hicks had, no doubt, known Mrs. Rachel Starr many years when she made and antenuptial agreement with him,

22 Jan. 1661/2, to become his second wife. In 1653 John Hicks was captain at Fort Neck, and he was deputy from Hempstead in 1665. His will was dated 1672. He was a man of ample means.* see Long Island Genealogies, 1895, by Powell and Bunker, vol. 12 of Records of the Plymouth Colony, and for copy of the will of John Hicks, the Haviland Genealogy, 1914, by Josephine C. Frost, p. 27, the Surrogate Records of New York, vol. 1, p .23, and vol. 2, p. 91, and also the New York Genealogical & Biographical Record, vol. 42, pp. 184-85.

Records show:

Born 25 Oct. 1607 in Southwark, London, England

Christened 12 Oct 1605 at St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey, England

Note: dates show Born date after Christened date, probably both are incorrect.

John Hicks has been called son of Robert Hicks who sailed on the 'Fortune', but Roberts will disproves this, for it seems unreasonable to assume that Robert Hicks of Plymouth would call Samuel Hicks his eldest son if John, still living and older than Samuel, were his son.

Notes for FLORENCE FORDHAM:

Some reports show that Elizabeth Hicks mother was Herodius Long, not Florence Fordham.

This was her second marriage - her aka would be Florence Carman, widow of John Carman

Previous to John Hicks, Florence Fordham was married in 1629, in Hempstead, Surrey, England to John Carmen. They are shown to have 8 children on ged.com. The children shown born to them are:

Mary Carman

Adam Craman

John Carman

Benjamin Carman

Abigail Carman

Caleb Carman

Joshua Carman

Thomas Carman

Notes for EBENEZER DIBBLE:

Birth date is actually his christening date.

He died in King Phillip's War in the 'Great Swamp Fight" at the age of 34.

Thomas Dibble (his father) took inventory for the estate of Ebenezer Dibble on 2/11/1676 in Windsor, Hartford Co., CT, "Who died last Deceamber in the war with the Indians."

A letter written by Mr. Jones at New Haven, to Gov. Leete, bears a postscript: "Sir, I pray be pleased what you can do to favor and further the bearer, Widow Dibble, that her husband's Estate may be settled. He was killed at the Swamp Fight; died in debt more than his estate. T'were a work of mercy to consider the poor widow and fatherless children,"

King Philip's War-The Great Swamp Fight

King Philip was an Indian, so named by the colonists. His name was Metacomet. He was Massasoit's son. Massasoit & Squanto were the Indians who met the Pilgrims at Plymouth. Philip led a confederation of Native American nations:

Wampanoags, Narragansetts, Nipmuchs, Pequots and Mohegans. The settlers had tried and hung 3 Native Americans in Plymouth. In 1675 Philip led the war. The Great Swamp Fight: The Indians had taken refuge in a dense swamp. Guided by Indian scouts, more than 1,000 militia men were led through the swamp and marshes and came upon a great walled fort where there were 3,000 Native Americans waiting. The battle was one of the most bitter fights that ever took place on American soil. There were very heavy casualties on both sides. Many settlers and many Native women and children were killed also. The Great Swamp fight did not end the war. Philip was eventually hunted down and killed.

King Philip's War:

Philip (Native American chief) (died 1676), sachem, or chief, of the Wampanoag tribe, second son of Chief Massasoit, who for nearly 40 years had been the first and staunchest ally of the Pilgrim settlers of Plymouth, in what is now Massachusetts. Philip succeeded his brother and formally renewed the treaties of his father, which he honored for some years. The colonists, however, made continual encroachments on native lands. In retaliation Philip formed a confederation of tribes and in 1675 led an uprising now know as King Philip's War. They burned towns and killed many of the inhabitants. In return the colonists captured Native American women and children, destroyed crops, and promised impunity to Native American deserters. In December 1675 the colonists won a major victory. During the spring of 1676 the Native Americans held out, but their numbers steadily diminished, and in August, Philip was killed. The war ended, and resistance to further colonial settlements in southern New England ceased.

Ships log shows his name as Comfort STARRE.

One of the earliest benefactors of Harvard College, the First college in America.

His son, The Reverend Comfort Starr, was the first family member to graduate from the College (in 1647), and is one of five Fellows named in the Harvard College Charter of 1650, the document that officially incorporated the school the school.

Dr Comfort Starr was one of the first overseers of Harvard College. According to family history, Dr. Starr's house became the home of Nathaniel Eaton and served in 1639 as the site where Harvard College instruction began.

Comfort Starr baptized July 6, 1589, St. Dunstan's, Cranbrook, Kent, England:

Buried King's Chapel Burial Ground, Boston, Suffolk, MA on April 22, 1659

Birth- SOURCE- book published in 1878, there where 500 copies, it is "History of Starr Family of New England", by Burgess P. Starr. (Reprinted copy obtained by Paula Connolly, author of this family tree, in 1999).

Dr. Comfort Starr (surgeon) and his wife, Elizabeth, sailed from Sandwich, England, with 3 of their children March 21, 1634-1635, aboard the 'Hercules'. Settled at New Town (Cambridge) & bought pastureland from Miles Standish (surgeon). The land was once called Ashford (Manor of Esshetesford). They moved to Boston in 1643.

From Elizabeth French, "Genealogical Research in England - Hatch, "New England Genealogical & Historical Register (NEHGR) (Boston: NE Hist. & Gen. Soc., July 1916), 70:245-260. Ms French later married J. Gardner Bartlett and continued writing genealogy articles and books under the name of Elizabeth French Bartlett or Elizabeth Bartlett. "William Hatch, Nathaniel Tilden, and Comfort Starr were co-owners of the ship, 'Hercules'. On February 11, 1634/35, the eve of the departure of the Hercules, Dr. Comfort Starr of Ashford, a surgeon aged 45, made the depostion that about the latter end of November 1633/34, John Witherley of Sandwich, mariner, bought a Flemish built ship at Dunkirk called the 'St. Peter' for 340 pounds. Dr. Starr said he was not a seaman and could not be specific about the ship, but guessed it to be about twelve feet broad above the hatches, fourscore feet long, and sixteen feet deep and is of the burthen of 200 tonnes (their spelling, not mine). That he and William Hatch, John Witherley, Nathaniel Tilden, and Mr. Osborne had purchased the ship and named it the 'Hercules'."

"Comfort Starr(e) of Ashford in Kent, Chirurgeon (surgeon)" appears on a passenger list in Yearbooks C & D of Sandwich, Kent County, England, 1608-1642. He and his family, along with 3 servants, sailed on the 200 ton 'Hercules' of Sandwich in the Spring of 1634/35. Only 3 children are listed: Thomas, Comfort (Jr), and Mary. The servants were: Saml Duncan, John Turver or Turbey, & Truth shall prevail Starre. In order to obtain passage, Dr. Starr presented a certificate of his "Conversaction and Conformity to the orders and discipline of the Church," signed by Edmund Hayes, Vicar of Asford, 21 March 1634, and another signed by John Honnywood and Thomas Godfrey, Justices.

The will of Dr. comfort Starr reads in its first item, "my body to ye earth from whence it came, to be burryed wth in ye usuall place of buriall in Boston so neere my late wife, as may be wth conuenience."

The "usual place of burial in Boston," and only one at the death of his wife, Elizabeth (1658), was what is now known as King's Chapel Burial Ground, and there, in compliance with the terms of his will, his body was interred in 1660. Whatever memorial stone was errected to mark his grave has disappeared. In 1904 a few of his descendants took steps to erect a cenotaph in King's Chapel Burial Ground facing Tremont Street. The stone is thus inscribed:

The "usual place of burial in Boston," and only one at the death of Elizabeth (1658), was what is now known as King's Chapel Burial Ground. Whatever memorial stone was erected to mark the grave has dissappeared. In 1904 a few of their descendants took steps to erect a cenotaph in King's Chapel Burial Ground facing Tremont Street (see notes under Comfort Starr, her husband).

There is also a tablet erected in St. Dunstan's Church, Cranbrook, Weald of Kent, England and dedicated in 1909 (see notes under Comfort Starr).

Notes for ROBERT HICKS:

This most likely is NOT the Robert Hicks that sailed on the "Fortune" and married Margaret Winslow

There seems to be a lot of controversy about who are John Hicks parents. The following is From "Dr. Thomas Starr, Surgeon in the Pequot War, and His Family Connections" by Hosea Starr Ballou of Brookline, Mass.

"Rachel (Harris-Starr) and John Hicks in 1666 and 1668 apparently wanted nothing from Dr. Thomas Starr's estate. Born in 1606, son of Robert and Elizabeth (Morgan) Hicks, early settlers of Plymouth, who, as early as 1640, owned land in the neighborhood of Dr. comfort Starr's family in Duxbury, at Island Creek, John Hicks had, no doubt, known Rachel Starr many years when she made an antenuptial agreement with him, 22 Jan. 1661-62, to become his second wife. In 1653 John Hicks was captian at Fort Neck, and he was deputy from Hempstead in 1665. His will was dated 29 Apr. 1672, and was proved at Jamaica, Long Island, 14 June 1672. He was a man of ample means."

During the Reformation in 1644 Joy Starr was a Warren at St. Mary the Virgin church in Ashford, Kent Co., England. There is a notice in the church that partially reads as follows:

"Whereas the ancient Altar and Altar-piece of the Parish Church of Ashford (having been both decent and ornamental, rising with a fine ascent, and the same railed in after a decent manner,) were in the time of the rebellion in the reign of our truly pious and late martyred Sovereign King Charles 1st, of blessed memory, in the year of our Lord 1644, sacrilegiously defaced and removed, and the Altar razed even with the ground, and some of the materials converted to their own private uses by men as well of factious and rebelious principles and practices as sacrilegious. And to perpetuate this their imfamous act and sacrilegious depridations, the then churchwardens, Joy Star and William Worsley (two of the actors in so great and villanious a profanation and profuse wasters of the Church's treasure), had their names cut in stone which they placed in the wall, where the ancient Altar-piece stood, as a monument thereof, but is now taken out and broken in pieces, it being a shame to our Church that the names of such men should remain there (already too long) who, under the hypocritical and disguise of abhorring idolatory, dared to be guilty of so bold a sacridege as toviolate God's Altar.

It appears that Joy Starr and his group decided that it was their duty to cleanse the church of all decoration, something that was done often during the Reformation.

Joyefoole Starr is not thought well of in the year 2000 by the church members, which is probably why the Starr family put the plaque commenoration Comfort Starr in St. Dunstans rather than here, the church that he left from.

2576. ROBERT DIBBLE436,437,438,439,440, born Bef. 1587 in England; died Aft. 1652 in Windsor, Hartford County, CT. He was the son of 5152. STEPHEN DEEBLE. He married 2577. "GOODY DEEBLE" DIBBLE 1652 in England441.

2577. "GOODY DEEBLE" DIBBLE442, born Bef. 1600 in England; died Aft. 1641.

Notes for ROBERT DIBBLE:

Ships log shows his name as Robert Dible, his Roll Number was #10 on the ships log.

He became a Freeman on May 6, 1635, on those rolls his name is spelled Dibell.

Name is seen spelled many different ways early on: Dibble, Debble, Deble, Dible

Deeble, etc.

"Robert Deeble was the first of this name in New England. He and his wife were early settlers of Dorchester, (South Boston) MA.

Per the Winthrop Society, "Robert and his wife immigrated in Spring of 1633 on the "Recovery" of London, Master Gabriel Cornish. The Recovery sailed from Weymouth, Dorsetshire, March 31, 1633, Julian Calendar, bound for New England. The ship arrived safe at Massachusetts Bay." The ships' log shows his name as Robert Dible, his Roll Number was #10 on the ship's logThis information was transcribed in the 19th century by James Savage, and later by Michael Tepper from records found in London, the Public rolls Office, PRO:E190/875/8

Per Peter Wilson Coldham, "Genealogical Gleanings in England: Passengers and ships to America, 1618-1668," in National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol 71, No. 3 (September 1983), pp 163ff. On page 171, "Robert Dible is listed among those who sailed on the 'Recovery' of London on March 31, 1633. He sailed with a wife and two sons, John & Abraham. They sailed from Weymouth to New England. His name is among a group who are "All planters and have carried with them diverse sorts of household stuff..."

Robert was at Dorchester (South Boston) in 1634, where he was made freeman (citizen) on May 6, 1635, and was living in Dorchester in 1652. On Dec. 17, 1635 in Dorchester, Bay Colony, MA, the record says, "It is ordered that Robert Deble shall have inlargement of two goad in length from his house upward, and that his sonne Thomas Deble shall have six goad next to him to goe with a right lyne up from the pale before his house, on condition for Thomas Deble to build a house there within one year, or else to loose that goad granted him." By Jan. 4, 1635/36, Robert Debble and his son had 30 acres of land.

Robert was bailiff from 1638 to 1640.

He was admitted to the church before Nov. 4, 1639 in Dorchester, Bay Colony, MA. On Mar. 7 1641/42 Robert, with others, signed the instrument which conveyed to the town of Dorchester the land on Tomson's Island.

Robert may have removed to Windsor, CT, where his son Thomas had settled earlier. Torrey says he lived at both Dorchester, MA & Windsor, CT. But the Warner-Harrington genealogy says his name is not found in the Windsor records.

Notes for "GOODY DEEBLE" DIBBLE:

Some records show her name as Unknown GOODETH.

"Goody Deeble" was admitted to the church on Oct. 29, 1641 in Dorchester, Bay Colony, MA (Warner, Warner Genealogy).

Robert & his wife (known only as Goody Deeble) evidently became members of the Dorchester Congregaton which was formed in 1629 in Plymouth, England, under the leadership of the Rev. John Warham of Exeter. Some members of this congregation sailed to America from Plymouth, Eng. and others embarked from Weymouth, Eng.

Notes for THOMAS FORD:

Also spelled Forde.

May have been born in Bridport, Dorsetshire, England.

Per the Strong Family Association of America:

Thomas Ford and his wife, Elizabeth Chard, along with their daughter, Abigail, were passengers on the ship, "Mary & John". Per ships records the ship was captained by Master Thomas Squeb. It sailed from Plymouth, England on March 30, 1630. The day of the sailing was the Saturday before Palm Sunday. Landed Nantasket, Massachusetts on May 30, 1630. The ship was 400 tons; on this trip it carried 140 passengers, 40-50 crew. Ship was owned by Roger Ludlow. The ship was supposed to land at the CharlesRiver, but Capt. Squeb refused to navigate the Boston Harbor, probably because of its islands, sandbars & shoals. He had the passengers disembark at Nantasket Point. June 30, 1630 - John Winthrop sent for Capt. Squeb at Nantasket, where the "Mary and John" lay. He did not record what was said. "[John] Winthrop seemed to think he had 'ended [the] difference between him [Capt. Squeb] and the passengers', in token of which Capt. Squeb gave the order for a salute of five guns in the govenor's honour and it was said that Squeb later paid compensation to [Roger] Ludlow." {Dorset Pilgrims, Frank Thistlethwaite, p.76}

Thomas Ford became a Freeman on May 18, 1631.

Per Strong Family Assoc. of America:

"It is possible he was the son of John Ford, the 3rd and Joan Beck (m. Feb. 3, 1583, Piddlehinton, Dorset, England), and nephew of Thomas Ford, merchant of Dorchester, who died Jan. 20, 1610/11. The latter's will, proved May 8, 1611, names, among others, his brother John, and "Thomas, son of my brother, John Forde." Thomas Ford arrived at Dorchester, MA on the 'Mary & John' in 1630 with wife, four daughters and step-son, Aaron Cooke, settled at Windsor, CT, where he was granted a fot in 1637, and moving to Northampton, MA in 1659. Freeman 1631; deputy to General Court 1637-1640; juror 1643 & 1644. In 1645 Thomas moved to Hartford, CT and established a tavern in the house of Thomas Scott. In 1652 he sold the tavern, and in 1655 was Constable at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. No documentary evidence has been found to support the long standing claim that the Thomas Ford who married Dec. 13, 1610 at Powerstock, Dorset, England, Joan Waye was the emigrant, nor that the Joane Waye who was buried there May 10, 1615 was the wife of Thomas Ford, rather than, say, his child. Thomas Ford married first June 19, 1616, Elizabeth Charde, Bridport, Dorset, England; and second Nov. 7, 1644 Annie (Sanford) Scott (d. May 5, 1676, Northampton, MA), widow of Thomas Scott who d. Nov. 6, 1643.

Notes for ELIZABETH (Chard) CHARDE:

Married first Sept. 2, 1610, Thornecombe, Dorset, England, Aaron Cooke (bur. Dec. 28, 1615, Bridport, Dorset, Eng.)

Arrived in America on the 'Mary & John' in 1630 with her husband, son and four daughters.
