Descendants of Fred & John Wheatbrook

Story of Frederick Wheatbrook

Through the census, military and newspaper accounts we see this Surname spelled various ways. A few of the more common spellings are Whitbrook and Weatbrook. Fred was most certainly at the mercy of the record keepers as he could not read or right which was not uncommon for that day. In the 1900 census he replies that he arrived in the US from Germany in 1841, 59 years previously.
Fred had but one child, that we know of by his first wife Mary. His name was Willie and appears that he may still be alive as late at 1907 where he appears on the at which time he is mentioned in the article concerning his father's death. Willie was born about 1864.

Military Record: Enlisted – 8/15/1862 into US Army Co., B 73rd Reg't on Indiana. Mustered Out 7/1/1865. Either divorced or separated by death from Mary, Fred remarries Lottie Redding in Berrien County, Michigan in 9 Dec1878. There we no children by this union.

May 6, 1907 – LaPorte Herald Argus Tragedy Snuffs Out Life of Frederick Wheatbrook
“Man who was a Brave Soldier Struck and Instantly Killed by Lake Shore Fast Train”
Just how the aged Frederick Wheatbrook came to be struck by the eastbound flyer yesterday afternoon is not known; no eye witnesses can be found. There are men who saw the body in the air before it feel to the ground, but none saw Wheatbrook stuck, through there are several who spoke with the unfortunate man a few minutes before he was killed. Article goes on in great length to describe some of the more gruesome details of the accident. Then continues in the following paragraphs.

Minister's Sad Duty - It was the sad duty of Rev. E. D. Daniels to break the news to the widow on her sick bed. It was gently spoken with words of comfort, but the shock was severe, and Mrs. Wheatbrook went into hysterics and was prostrated. Her condition today is serious.

The Suicide Theory – Due to Fred's illness there was mention in the article of possible suicide due to his age and poor health. The article continues.... Besides hie aged wife, Wheatbrook is survived by a son, by his first wife, but where he is now is unknown. The last heard of him he was in Michigan City, but that is quite a time ago. John Wheatbrook, who lives up near Shippeeburg, is a nephew. If there are other relatives they are unknown here. Feeble, owing to Age, Mr. Wheatbrook had been very feeble the past winter. He told friends who asked that he was 83 years old, but the Argus Bulletin on looking up his army papers found that he was only 76. He passed the greater part of his life, nearly all of it, in the county and city.

He was born in Michigan. (Author's note – this is odd, because on all the census reports, Fred claims he was born in Germany.) This is probably correct and his brother would have been John Wheatbrook (Weatbrook) and he states he was born in Waldeck. Germany.

Obituary for Lottie Redding Wheatbrook: Laporte Daily Herald Argus, Monday, Mar 15, 1926 p.2 Mrs. Lottie Wheatbrook – Funeral Services for Mrs. Lottie Wheatbrook, age 80, widow of the late Fred Wheatbrook, who died Friday at the Old Soldier home, Lafayette, were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the E. E. Ebbert's chapel, the Rev. M. G. Long officiated. Burial was in Pine Lake cemetery. The deceased woman was born in Michigan Feb 5, 1845. She is survived by one nephew, Mr. Powers of Chicago.
