A tornado ripped through LaPorte County on October 24, 2001

Oak Grove Cemetery in Wills Township reminds many of us of our country during this troubled time.
What ever storm or seemingly insurmountable problem confronts us; we unite together in an effort to repair and restore our landmarks and traditions with the help of our neighbors. This is proof of our fellowship of man and it was very evident when visiting the Oak Grove Cemetery and taking pictures. Even a bountiful lunch was prepared and presented by some wonderful ladies in the community to feed the volunteers that came out to help clear and repair.

More than fifty people have worked the past few weekends with everything from heavy equipment to a simple garden rake. It is also amazing that partially due to their efforts, very few of the tombstones we damaged or upset.

And the fallen trees will not be wasted. Many of the larger ones will be milled. The ingenuity and dedication of this group was very impressive. This is America at its best.

Below are pictures of the first weekend October 27th through 29th . Volunteers came out to remove debris and evaluate the damage. Pictures in this grouping were taken by Holly Jenks. To view a large picture click on the thumbnail shot . To return to this page, hit your back button.

The other set at the bottom of the page were taken by Deanna West as the cleanup effort continued on the weekend of November 3rd and 4th 2001.
