Overview of Cemetery
This cemetery was also named as Schimmel Cemetery. From the History of Dewey twp, LaPorte County, we take the following phrase:   "The township is settled chiefly by Germans, George P. Schimmel is probably the first one who made a settlement. He arrived on the first day of January, 1854, though Jacob Schauer came about the same time, and possible was foremost."
From The History of the Diocese of Gary. Saint Martin of Tours Parish - The original church was located at Schimmels, about two miles northwest of LaCrosse and built in 1860. A new church was built in La Crose in 1914. The present church was built in 1932 after a disastrous fire, but the original bell from first church in Schimmels survived and is in the present church. However, the cemetery is located more northeast of LaCrosse.
