Friends characterize Baugh as silent hero to many in Bedford
By BOB BRIDGE, Times-Mail Staff Writer Bob Baugh, Bedford’s quiet, humble hero, died Sunday night at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis of heart failure. It was just over a year ago that Thornton Memorial Boys Club officials designated one of its four new diamonds at Wiley Youth Park as Robert F. Baugh Field. “I've always dreamed about a park like this,” Baugh said as his eyes scanned the sparkling new facility. “I really feel humbled. A lot of people have put in a lot of hard work. A lot of people’s names could have gone up on that board.” But none more worthy than Robert F. Baugh, who directed the club from 1951 through 1983 and served as a teacher in Bedford from 1956 through 1987. “He was the kindest, most unselfish, most caring person I’ve ever met,” insisted Joe Klumpp, the club’s present director. “He never would take the credit for anything, yet he’s largely responsible for the success of our Boys Club. “Bob gave a lifetime of involvement to the club. I consider him a patriarch of our Boys Club family.” Klumpp recalled impromptu gatherings in Baugh’s office at the club on 16th Street. “I considered him my mentor,” he explained “He was just so wise about the ways of life. He used to hold court there in his office. Sometimes there were so many people that there weren’t enough chairs. He just had so much influence on people’s lives.” Bill Baker, who served as director following Baugh’s retirement, said Baugh had a special knack for dealing with people. “Bob Baugh was a gentleman’s gentleman among boys,” he explained. “Everyone respected Bob. He gave us so many good times, and we worked with so many fine boys through the years. A lot of those boys we worked with are the men who helped build that new park.” Lee Hutchinson, one of Baugh’s many lifelong friends, said Baugh faced many challenges as a young boy. “Bob grew up just as poor as any boy could be,” he noted. “He always wanted to take care of young kids, especially the ones from low-income families. “Bob would teach all day, then work at the club until late at night. We tried to give him a raise, but he wouldn’t take it. “He never sought fame and fortune, but he made so many friends. If you measured wealth according to respect, Bob was the richest man in town. Yet I don’t think he ever realized how much people thought of him.” Ed Charles described Baugh as the driving force behind the Boys Club. He said Baugh personally nurtured its development and care. “Larry Ikerd, Viv Bowden and I tried our best to give that man a raise, but he wouldn’t take it,” he recalled. “He didn’t want to take money away from the club or the kids. No one will ever know all the things he did for the boys in this community. “Our club would never have survived without Bob Baugh. He had to get by on a tight budget, and he always found a way to do it. He was a problem solver.”Bob Lee insisted Baugh was the ideal role model for Bedford’s youth. “In 55 years I’ve never known him to do one dishonest thing,” he said. “I’ve never known him to tell a lie. “He was always concerned about young kids, and never concerned about the well being of Bob Baugh. At one time I think he knew every kid in town. “Bob Baugh is irreplaceable. He was like a brother to me.” Viv Bowden echoed that sentiment. “He’s one of the most wonderful individuals I have ever known,” he said. “He’s a man that never said anything bad about anyone. He was just a peach of a man, and he was a self-made man.” Bowden said Baugh was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinal fan and an avid fisherman. “He loved to fish,” Bowden said. “We used to go to Canada each spring when school let out. We had a lot of good times.” Bowden characterized Baugh as an attentive, caring listener. “He was just a major influence in so many lives,” he explained. “He had the patience of Job and he cared so much about people, especially young people who needed his help.” Brian Baugh, Bob’s youngest son, said his father taught his children how to behave and how to treat other people. “He gave every minute of his life to the service of other people,” Brian noted. “He never worried about his pocketbook. He created so many opportunities for so many people. I can’t imagine there are many other people in Bedford who had such a major impact on so many lives.”

Alex Evans Answered "Here!"
On Shiloh's awful battlefield,
Where neither North nor South would yield,
Twixt Union men and Rebel host,
For the Union cause at any cost,
Mid loud cannon shots and shells,
Where brave herioc generals fell,
When the call came for men without fear,
Alex Evans answered "Here!"
On Lookout Mountain's headless height,
The foe pushed in headlong flight,
The call came for men without fear,
And Captain Evans answered "Here!"
When the war was over as peaceful man,
He labored still with heart and hand,
He took a Christian as a wife,
With her he fought the battle of life,
Three girls, six boys in all they raised,
Three who preceeded them to the grave,
When family needs came loud and clear,
Father Evans answered "Here!"
At last the call from Heaven he heard,
And became obedient to the living word,
He joined the army of the mighty Prince,
And has lived faithful to him ever since,
When Heaven's call came loud and clear,
Brother Evans answered "Here!"
