Sudden Death of Maj. M. A. Malott

Bedford, Ind., October 18–The community was startled this morning on the receipt of the intelligence of the death of Maj. M. A. Malott about 7 AM at his residence in this city. The deceased was one of the leading citizens of this section of the state. He was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, in 1802 but moved to Lawrence County during the 20s. At the time of his death he was president of the First National Bank of Bedford and was prominently identified with all the commercial, industrial and educational interests of the county. A consistent, though conservative, Democrat during his whole life, he had represented the county in both branches of the state legislature. He was the father of Judge Newton Malott of Vincennes. Maj. Malott died recognized as one of the best and most respected citizens Lawrence County ever had, and his loss will be the occasion of lasting regret the part of the people with whom he lived nearly a half century.
