Springville man dies

BLOOMINGTON --ÊA Springville man was killed early Tuesday morning when he ran a red light at the intersection of the Ind. 37 Bypass and Tapp Road and his pickup collided with a van, police said. John R. Bell, 58, died at Bloomington Hospital at 11:14 a.m., according to Monroe County sheriff's deputy Steve Hinds Police said Bell, who was driving a 1982 Dodge truck, was traveling south on Ind. 37 when he ran the red light and collided with a 1987 GMC van, driven by David Ragan, 46, Bloomington. The force of the impact caused Bell's truck to go over an embankment on the south side of Tapp Road, Hinds said. Bell did not brake and only appeared to swerve at the last second to avoid the crash, Hinds said. Ragan was taken to Bloomington Hospital with minor injuries. He was treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the accident, Hinds said.

Herald-Times Report
A rural Springville man died Tuesday morning when he ran a red light at the Ind. 37 Bypass and Tapp Road and collided with a van, police said. John R. Bell, 58, was pronounced dead at Bloomington Hospital following the 11:14 a.m. accident, Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Hinds said. Bell was traveling south on Ind. 37 when his 1982 Dodge Rampage pickup truck collided with a 1987 GMC van, driven by David Ragan, 46, of 1203 Paper Birch Court, Hinds said. Ragan, who was treated at Bloomington Hospital and released, was driving west on Tapp Road when Bell's truck ran into the right front quarterpanel of his vehicle, he said. The impact forced Bell's truck over a slight embankment on the south side of Tapp Road, he said. Hinds said Bell — who had just returned Monday from a vacation with his family — never braked, and only appeared to swerve at the last second to try to avoid the crash. "It's unknown why he just ran the red light," Hinds said. He said driver inattention or a medical condition may have contributed to the crash. Neither speed nor alcohol appeared to have been a factor, he said.
