Robert E. Coleman Sun Apr 27 20:51:40 1997
I am researching the Coleman surname. Three or four Coleman brothers, James (m. Elizabeth Williamson), Alexander (m. Nancy Wooten), Moses and Andrew, along with their mother Charlotte Thompson Coleman (separated from Peter Coleman Jr. of Grayson Co. VA and Pike Co. KY) and a sister. These Colemans came from Pike Co. KY to Bryantsville and other areas of Spice Valley township in the mid 1830's. James Coleman was my great grand- father. My grandfather was Alexander Coleman, named after James' brother. James and Elizabeth had other sons, Harmon and Jackson. I am particularly searching for information about the following: 1. No trace of James is found in Lawrence Co. His wife and children are listed in the 1840 census without James. His wife is referred to as a widow when marrying William Ray in 1844. What ever happened to James Coleman? Is there any record of his death? 2. James and his brother, Alexander got Lawrence Co. land from military land warrants. What was the basis for getting a military land warrant in Lawrence Co. in mid 1830's? 3. Alexander Coleman, my grandfather married first Marinday Jones, second Polly Evans (both of Lawrence Co.), and finally married Elizabeth Young much later, 1874, in Newton Co. Arkansas. He and his brother Harmon settled near Rolla Missouri by the 1850 census. Alexander fought in the civil war battle of Pea Ridge Arkansas in March 1862. Did he fight on the side of Confederates? Did he later join the Union army? Is it true that he fought in a battle on the opposite side from his little brother, Jackson (who remained in Bryantsville)? Jackson enlisted in the union 17th regiment of Indiana Volunteers at Huron Indiana on August 11, 1862. 4. Jackson was captured in a battle and returned to camp Morton (Indianapolis) in a prisoner exchange. He came home on furlough to Bryantsville and died from small pox in January 1864. Many soldiers in his outfit died of small pox. He had just one child Oliver, from whom descendents survive. I would like to contact any descendents of Oliver. 5. I would like to contact any descendents of William Ray who married James Coleman's widow, Elizabeth Williamson Coleman.

I have in my possession six photographs taken by Wm. M. Roan, Photographer, of Leesville, Indiana. Two of the photographs are my great great greatgrandparents, Andrew W. Speer (born 4/22/1802) and Dicy Kearby Speer (born 4/11/1805). The other four photographs are of children, apparently taken on the same day. These children are not in my direct line which is Robert Kearby Speer, Susan Jane Speer Barrett, Robert Elza Barrett, Roberta Jean Barrett Edwards. Does anyone have any information on who the following children belonged to: William F. Speer born 1/8/1860 Mary Jane Speer born 9/12/1861 Andrew S. Speer born 2/20/1863 James Robert Speer born 5/7/1864 John W. Speer born 6/22/1866 Dicy Anna Belle (Speer) born 1/30/1868 George Thomas Speer born 3/24/1870 The youngest child, George appears to be about 1 or 2 years old in his photograph, so I'm estimating the photos were taken around 1871 or 1872.

I am searching for an Alfred Maden who was related to Polly Mitchell Maden whohad connections with or came from Lawrence Co, Indiana in 1819 when they bought or inherited land in Chillicothe, Ohio (lots 73 and 275). That land was bought by James Mitchell of Adams County, Ohio (Ross County) in 1797. I believe James Mitchell was related to Polly Mitchell Maden James may have been related to John Mitchell of Chillicothe / Pickaway / Ross County Ohio area. John is the main focus of my search. I am in hopes that someone related to Alfred Maden (of Lawrence County, Indiana) might help me connect to the early Mitchell's of that Ohio area, especially John or James.

CORRECTION in LAWRENCE CO. In previous queries that I have submitted for Ralph LOWDER and his wife Achsah, I showed Achsah with maiden name Mendenhall. I have now determine through documented sources that Achsah's maiden name was HODSON. Her parents were David HODSON and ESTHER LAMB from Guilford Co. N. C. If anyone is researching these families I would like to correspond with them.

Lawrence, Owen, Monroe Query I am looking for references to an Emmett Hansford born 1876 of unknown parents, died in 1931 in Ellettsville, Monroe County. He married Julia (surname unknown) 1884-1960 who was also buried in Ellettsville. So far no connection to Monroe Co. Hansfords is known so I have wondered if they have Lawrence Co. Hansford connections.

Looking for information on Preston Dougherty. Married Massey Sutherland in 1834. She was also called Mary or Malinda. He was born in KY. and I believe his father was Preston H. Dougherty who surveyed land in Warren Co., KY. in 1799. His name is spelled Preston Doherty on the 1850 and 1860 Census. He had at least 11 children: William (Civil War Vet); James; George; David (Farmed in Medora until his death in 1914); Burton; Eliza; Alexander (my ancestor, went with William to the civil war as a drummer); Sarah E.; Josephine; Nancy A.; and Silas. If you have any information on Preston or any of his children please let me know. I do not know what happened to Preston after 1860. I would like to know where he ended up and where he died. Any help at all would be appreciated. Lee Dougherty 289-6 Corry Village, Gainesville, Fl. 32603
