Karen Elaine Bowling

Karen Elaine Bowling, 66, passed away at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, November 15, 2015, at her residence in Huntingburg.
She was born February 22, 1949 in Vincennes, Indiana, to Chester and Ethel (Durham) Marsh. She married Ronald Bowling on February 23, 1965 in Laurel, Indiana.Karen retired in February of 2014 from National Office Furniture in Santa Claus after working there 30+ years. She was a member of the Cup Creek General Baptist Church near Velpen. She enjoyed playing cards and board games; was an avid NASCAR fan; enjoyed going for walks; and loved spending time with her family.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Charles Marsh; and one sister, Melody Marsh.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Bowling of Huntingburg, Ind.; two daughters, Rhonda Hill of Huntingburg and Kimberly Masterson of Huntingburg; one son, Richard Bowling of Camden, Ind.; two brothers, Ronald Marsh of Princeton and Mark Marsh of Hymera, Ind.; one sister, Patricia Rogers of Terre Haute, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Karen Bowling will be held at 2:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, November 19, 2015, at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg with burial to follow at Fairmount Cemetery in Huntingburg.  The Reverend Ronald Marsh will officiate at the service.
Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, the day of the funeral


Leona B. Stromblad

Leona B. Stromblad, 74, of Jasper, passed away at 3:55 p.m. on Friday, November 13, 2015, at The Timbers of Jasper.
Leona was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 18, 1941 to Pauline Palarczyk. She married Lloyd Stromblad. He preceded her in death in 1975.
Leona was homemaker and she enjoyed crocheting.
She is survived by one daughter, Renee Stromblad of Bensenville; three sons, Raymond Stromblad of Jasper, James Stromblad of Tenn. and Lloyd Stromblad of Ind.
Preceding her in death are her parents.
Private services for Leona B. Stromblad will be held at a later date.


Sister Adele Weyer

Sister Adele Weyer, 97, of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, died at 4 a.m. on Friday, November 13, 2015, at the monastery’s Hildegard Health Center.
Sister Adele was born August 20, 1918 in Ferdinand, Indiana, the third of seven children of John and Ida (Altmeyer) Weyer. She entered the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand in 1936 and made her profession of monastic vows in 1938.  She celebrated the 75th anniversary of her monastic profession in 2013.
She is survived by a brother, Robert Weyer, and wife Linda, of Linton; sister-in-law, Janice Weyer of Charlestown; nieces and nephews; and members of her religious community. She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers, Ernest, Norman, Odilo, Daniel, and Edgar.
Sister Adele taught at schools in Mount Vernon, Huntingburg, Washington, Elberfeld, Rockport, Columbus, Vincennes, Haubstadt, Ferdinand, St. Theresa and Holy Spirit in Evansville, Benet Learning Center in Fort Wayne, and St. Ann’s Indian Mission in Belcourt, North Dakota. She taught religious education at St. Raphael Parish in Dubois. She worked in the monastery infirmary and archives and did other supportive services. She also helped care for her aged mother. She most recently served in the ministry of prayer.
Visitation will be at the monastery on Sunday, November 15, from 3 to 7:15 p.m. EST, and on Monday, November 16, from 3 to 4:15 p.m. A wake service will be on Sunday at 7:15 p.m. The funeral Mass will be on Monday at 4:30 p.m. in the monastery church followed by burial in the monastery cemetery.
Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand is in charge of the arrangements.

Alva Freadman Allen

Alva Freadman Allen, 93, of Jasper, passed away at 6:56 p.m. Monday, November 9, 2015, in the Timbers of Jasper Health Care Center in Jasper.
He was born on January 7, 1922 in Daviess County, Indiana to Dale and May (Raney) Allen. He married Elizabeth Hart on July 3, 1943 in Washington, Indiana. She preceded him in death on September 9, 2008.
Alva Allen was a WWII Army veteran. He retired as a public school superintendent. He was a member of The Indiana Association of Public School Superintendent’s – Phi Delta Kappa – Jasper Masonic Lodge # 743 and The First Presbyterian Church of Jasper.
He is survived by his sons, Dennis D. Allen of Pinellas Park, Fla., Daryl R. Allen of Lakewood, Colo. and David L. Allen of Jasper; sisters, Lucille Arvin of Washington, Camilla Peterson of Mesa, Ariz., Emma Harder of Cannelburg, Betty Kelley of Washington and Joyce Martin of Washington.
Preceding him in death besides his wife are six sisters and five brothers.
Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery of Reeve Townships, Daviess County Indiana at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2015.
Memorial services for Alva Allen will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper. The Rev. Jerry Straight will officiate. Also, Line Masonic Line Lodge F&A.M. # 743 will hold their Memorial service.

Martha K. Evans

Martha K. Evans, 40, of Dubois, passed away at 6:34 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2015, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper.
Martha was born in Huntingburg, Indiana on May 20, 1975 to Bernard and Joyce (Gehlhausen) Stallman. She married Richard Evans on May 3, 2003.
She was a 1993 graduate of Heritage Hill High School. She enjoyed crocheting.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Evans of Dubois; six daughters, Megan Stallman of Jasper, Gretchen Cribbs of Jasper, Lelah Jerger and her husband Jade of Huntingburg, Jaucqline Jackson and her husband Jeremy of Evansville, Shannon Evans of Indianapolis and Dianna Evans of Washington; one son, Oliver Evans and his wife Angela of Jasper; 10 grandchildren, Olyvia Beard, Andrew Denu, Sophia Denu, Scott Jerger, Vala Evans, Madison Jackson, Chelsey Mackey, Tonya Mackey, Jonathon Mackey and Dakota Mackey; two great-grandchildren, Derrick Birk and Lilyana Plake; parents, Bernard and Joyce Stallman of Dale; two sisters, Rebecca Rau of Dale and Anita Oldham and her husband Steve of Florida; one brother, BJ Stallman and his wife Pat of Santa Claus; nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her grandparents, Emil and Clara Stallman and Leander and Helen Gehlhausen; one sister, Bernadette Stallman; and one brother, John Stallman.
Funeral services for Martha K. Evans will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper, with burial to follow in Shiloh Cemetery. Rev. Darrell Wininger will officiate.

Levanis T. Ernst

Levanis “Lenny” T. Ernst, 76, of Jasper, passed away at 2:05 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, at home.
Lenny was born on September 6, 1939 in Jasper, Indiana to Theodore and Thresia (Arehart) Ernst. He married Barbara Smith on October 13, 1962 at St. Mary’s Church in Huntingburg.
Lenny retired from the Jasper Corporation after more than 35 years of service. He then worked part time for St. Charles Medical Complex. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Jasper Moose, and Jasper Outdoor Recreation. He served in the Indiana Army National Guard.
For many years, he played “Santa” for many organizations and families. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ernst of Jasper; one daughter, Lisa Ruhe and husband Mike of Jasper; two sons, Mark Ernst and wife Jill of Jasper and Brian Ernst of Jasper; four grandchildren, Kirby, Kortney and Kendyl Ruhe, and Landon Ernst.
Preceding him in death were three sisters, Carol Matheis, Dolores Flannagan and Claretta Ernst who died in infancy.
Funeral services for Lenny Ernst will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, November 16, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, IN, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper, Indiana.
Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, 2015, at the Becher-Kluesner North Chapel in Jasper, Indiana. The Jasper Moose will conduct a memorial service at 6:00 p.m.

Helen Mae Arensman

Helen Mae Arensman, 94, died on November 2, 2015.
A nurse, teacher, and veteran of World War II, she was also a loving wife and mother.
Mae was born on May 20, 1921 in Huntingburg. She married Ray William Arensman in 1946.
As a flight evacuation nurse in the US Army Air Corps, she served in both the European and Asian-Pacific theaters.
Mae taught obstetrical nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital and the University of Evansville. She loved bridge, math, sewing, and travel.
Mae was an active member of the Methodist Temple, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Planned Parenthood, and a dedicated supporter of her husband and the Temple Airs.
Mae was devoted to her family.
She is survived by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will remember her fondly.
Her life was pieced together like a beautiful quilt. It was filled with much love and laughter, with family and friends, and with a long life shared with the man she adored.
There will be a private service. Memorial contributions to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.


Thomas Inman

Thomas H. Inman, age 86, Shoals, Indiana formerly of Whitefish, Montana, passed away at 9:45 PM, on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at IU Health Paoli Hospital, Paoli, Indiana.
Tom was born on September 5, 1925 in Pike County, Indiana to Perry and Estelle (Bristow) Inman. He married Lorraine “Amy” Reed and she preceded him in death in 1986.
He was a graduate from Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona and had attended Arizona State University. He was a retired Instrument Technician from Honeywell and Dupont. He was active with REACT in Arizona and enjoyed Trap Shooting . He was also a WWII Veteran of the US Navy.
He is survived by his son, Bruce (Sally) Inman of Shoals, grandchildren, Jason (Nicole) Inman, Brian (Lurea) Inman and Anjanette Inman and his great grandchildren, Jacob, Kailee, Brooklyn, Chad, Zackery, and Elisabeth.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Amy and a brother, Richard Inman.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by T.L. Pinnick Mortuary, 785 South Bears Bend Road, French Lick where the family will receive friends, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and again on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 from 10:30 AM until 11:30 AM. A graveside service will be Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Ashby Cemetery, Winslow, Indiana with Rev. Terry L. Pinnick officiating.


Mabel Tedrow

Mabel L. Tedrow, 86, of French Lick, passed away at 6:52 PM, Monday, May 5, 2014 at Medco Health and Rehabilitation Center in French Lick.
Mabel was born January 9, 1928 in Orange County, Indiana to Elmer Myles and Emeline Florence (Lewis) Wyman. She married Marion Tedrow on February 27, 1944 and he preceded her in death on July 12, 2004.
Mabel was a homemaker who delighted in taking care of her family and going to church everytime the doors were open.
She is survived by her sons, Larry (Judy) Tedrow of Princeton, Perry (Cathy) Tedrow of Bristow, Thomas (Sherry) Tedrow of Pekin, Jeff (Teresa) Tedrow of West Baden, Brad (Deanna) Tedrow of Paoli, daughter, Sharon (LeRoy) Boyer of Paoli, twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Carl Wyman of French Lick and Don Wyman of Shoals.
Preceding her in death were parents, husband, a son, Michael Tedrow a granddaughter, Lori Crowder, brothers, Lawrence, Ed, Norman and Joey Sherman, Jim, Herb, Clarence and Harold Wyman, and sisters, Beth Sherman, Pearl Chisel and Juanita Moffatt.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, May 9, 2014 at T.L Pinnick Mortuary, 785 South Bears Bend Rd., French Lick, with Rev. Don Laird officiating. Burial will be at Highland Chapel Cemetery in West Baden. Friends may call from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, May 8, 2014 and again on Friday, May 9, 2014 from 9:00 AM until service time at T.L Pinnick Mortuary.

Merl Emmons

Merl Emmons, age 94, of Shoals, Indiana passed away October 1st, 2012 at his residence.
He was born on September 21st, 1918 in Martin County, Indiana to William Emmons and Minnie “Campbell“ Emmons.
He married Roberta Archer on April 30th, 1942, and she precedes him in death.
He was a farmer and a member of the Farm Bureau Co-op association.
Merl was a hardworking farmer as well as a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed mushrooms, squirrels, corn on the cob, and those little children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Roberta on May 17th, 2001, and his (11) brothers and sisters. Merl was the last member of the William Emmons children.
He is survived by:

Melchior Kalb

Melchior G. (Mac) Kalb, 92 of Shoals, Indiana passed away on Thursday, April 2nd, 2015 at his Lost River Township home. He was born on February 26, 1923 in Martin County, Indiana to the late Conrad and Isabel (Simmons) Kalb.
He was preceded in death by (2) Brothers - Roger Keith and Marvin Kalb, (2) Sisters - Elaine Stetler and Iris (Eugene) Brown.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, serving on the USS Cowanesque.
He was a lifelong farmer, former Lost River trustee, and served as President of the Shoals School Board.  He was also a former Grange and American Legion member. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and mushroom hunting.
He is survived by

Louise A. Daugherty

Louise A. Daugherty, 76, of French Lick, passed away at 12:30 AM, Saturday, January 31, 2015 at her residence.
Louise was born August 27, 1938 in Martin County, Indiana, to Roscoe and Clara (Lagenour) Harner. She married Walter Eugene “Gene” Daugherty on July 21, 1955 and he preceded her in death on December 31, 1998.
Louise was a very active person participating in Relay for Life, socializing with her neighbors, cooking and baking and watching her great granddaughter, Kayla play basketball. She was also well known for her love for the family animals where she would send them birthday cards and gifts each year. She was a homemaker and had attended Springs Valley Wesleyan Church and was baptized by her nephew, Brent this past November at Christian Church of Jasper.
She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Daugherty of French Lick and Rita Daugherty and companion Frank Weyer of Birdseye, granddaughter, Martina Deweese and husband, Doug of French Lick and great granddaughter, Kayla Deweese of French Lick. She is also survived by her brothers, Howard Harner of French Lick and Ralph Harner and wife, Betsy of Bloomington.
Preceding her in death were her husband, parents and a brother Harold Harner

Betty Jean Campbell

Betty Jean Campbell, 76, of Hillham, passed away at 4:55 PM, Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Medco Health and Rehabilitation Center in French Lick.
Betty was born April 19, 1937 in Martin County, Indiana, to Cecil and Ida (Qualkenbush) Quinn. She married Ellis “Bus” Campbell on September 24, 1977 and he preceded her in death on December 24, 2004.
Betty had previously worked as the Dietician at Medco Health and Rehabilitation and Gentlecare Nursing Home. She loved riding horses, was an avid bingo player, enjoyed oil painting and going to the dances at the Sr. Citizens She was a member of the French Lick American Legion Post #76 Auxiliary.
She is survived by her father, Cecil Quinn of Hillham , daughter, Lorrie (Charles) Brosmer of Hillham, sons, Lonnie Shepard of Hillham and Rick Shepard of Spurgeon, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her mother Ida Quinn.
Services will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 1, 2014 at T.L Pinnick Mortuary, 785 South Bears Bend Rd., French Lick, with Rev. Terry Pinnick officiating. Burial will be at the Wineinger Cemetery in Hillham. Friends may call from from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at T.L Pinnick Mortuary.

Charlene Moore

Charlene R. Moore, 79, of West Baden Springs, passed away at 8:05 PM, Friday, October 4, 2013 at Medco Health and Rehabilitation Center in French Lick.
Charlene was born April 3, 1934 in Orange County, Indiana, to Russell and Ethel (Lashbrooks) Breeden. She married Richard Moore on November 21, 1949 and he survives.
Charlene was a homemaker and had retired from Kimball International. She was also previously employed at 7-Up and Essex. Charlene loved sewing, woodworking, Square Dancing and reading. She was a member of The Natchez Church.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Moore of West Baden Springs, sons, Randall Lee (Marguerite) Moore of West Baden Springs and Bobby Dale (Joyce) Moore of McAllen, Texas, six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, a son, Ricky Ray Moore and two brothers, Charles and Joe Breeden.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, October 7, 2013 at T.L Pinnick Mortuary, 785 South Bears Bend Rd., French Lick, with Rev. Wayne Pendley officiating. Burial at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Paoli. Harry Purhhiser

Harry Edward Purkhiser, Jr., 90, of West Baden Springs, passed away at 2:35 AM, Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at The Waters of Scottsburg in Scottsburg, Indiana.
Harry was born August 2, 1923 in Martin County, Indiana, to Harry and Ada (Moore) Purkhiser, Sr. He married Vera Gwendoline “Gwennie” Jones on February 29, 1940 and she preceded him in death on October 18, 2009.
Harry was a farmer, and had previously worked as an electronic technician at Crane and a truck driver. He was a member of the Newton Stewart Masonic Lodge and the West Baden American Legion. He was a member of the former Powell Valley EUB Church and attended Ames Chapel United Methodist Church. He was an avid reader, enjoyed woodworking and was talented at carving. He had served in the US Navy during WWII.
He is survived by a son Ray (Paulette) Purkhiser of French Lick, daughter, Brenda (Louis Rex) Emmons of French Lick, grandchildren, Sherri (Don) Horton of Haysville, Douglas (Nancy) Emmons of Jackson, Michigan, Pamela (Michael) Dixon of French Lick, Amanda (Ron) Parsons of French Lick and James (Samantha) Emmons of Jasper, eight great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Preceding him in death were parents and wife, a sister, Mildred Chestnut, brothers, Virgil E. Purkhiser, Charles L. Purkhiser, and James Harold Purkhiser and two sisters in infancy, two granddaughters, Lisa K. Purkhiser and Marcy Dyann Emmons and a daughter-in-law, Eva Sue Purkhiser.
Services will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, February 3, 2014 at T.L Pinnick Mortuary, 785 South Bears Bend Rd., French Lick, with Douglas Emmons and Matt Dalton officiating. Interment will be in the Ames Chapel Cemetery in Paoli with military graveside rites. Friends may call from from 12:00 noon until 4:00 PM on Sunday, February 2, 2014 and again on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 9:00 AM until the service time at the mortuary. A Masonic Service will be held, Sunday, February 2, 2014 at 3:00 PM.

Pauline Crews

Pauline (Tolbert) Crews, age 78, of French Lick, Indiana entered in eternal rest on October 7th, 2015 at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Indiana.
She was born in Martin County, Indiana on November 13th, 1936 to Lincoln and Pearl (Allen) Tolbert.
Pauline married Vernon D. Crews on November 15th, 1953 and he preceded her in death on November 3rd, 2011.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, (1) Brother – Roy Lee Tolbert and (3) Sisters – Lorena Jones, Macie Ruth Holton and Ella Mae Goodrich.
Pauline was a Charter Member of the Springs Valley Church of the Nazarene, enjoyed spending time with family and loved to travel. She went to school at the West Baden High School. After high school, Pauline attended the Northwood College where she took business classes.
She had worked as a hair dresser and also volunteered at the West Baden Springs Hotel.
She is survived by:

Margaret Hendrix

Margaret June Hendrix, age 91, of French Lick, Indiana passed away on March 20th, 2014 at Medco Health and Rehabilitation in French Lick, Indiana.  
Margaret was born on June 11th, 1922 in Martin County (near Rusk), Indiana to Noah Kerns and Ollie “Jones” Kerns. She also had a twin sister Blume.
She married Kenneth Hendrix on March 7th, 1943, who departed this life on December 21st, 1991. To this union was born a son – Kern and a daughter – Dianne.
She was preceded in death by her parents, (4) Sisters – Essie Mae Harder, Grace Fuhrman, Mary Harder and Blume Sherfick; and (5) Brothers – Ollis, Homer, Oscar, Alton and Bert Kerns.
June and Kenneth enjoyed their farming and Angus cattle. June loved working in her garden, flowers and sewing. They were 4-H leaders for many years.
June was a faithful member of the Powell Valley Church, former member of the W.S.C.S. and held many offices in the church. She was also a member of the Powell Valley Home Extension Club for more than 50 years and a member of the Flower and Garden Club.
Her door was always open and she enjoyed all the activities and fellowship with family and friends.

Keith Wortinger

Keith Wortinger, age 64, of Dubois, Indiana passed away August 3rd, 2012  at his residence in Dubois, Indiana.
He was born on December 2nd, 1947 in Orange County, Indiana to Arthur Wortinger and Edna “Condra“ Wortinger.
He married Joanne Matheson on August 24th, 1968 and she survives.
He graduated from Springs Valley High School with the Class of 1965. After High School he attended and graduated  Union College on a basketball scholarship in Barbourville, Kentucky. He then obtained his Masters Degree from Western Michigan University.
He started his career teaching math at Central Middle School in South Haven Michigan, then became Assistant Principal at Tippecanoe Valley High School in Mentone, Indiana. He then moved to Dubois, Indiana and became the Principal of Dubois Middle School.
Keith was also a member of the National Principal’s Association and served on The Indiana Governor’s Task Force of Education.
He enjoyed playing golf, basketball, tennis, and coin collecting.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Sarah Maysel DeMotte, 96, of Loogootee, formerly of Elnora, went to Heaven peacefully on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at the Loogootee Nursing Center.
She was born on February 26, 1919 in Daviess County to Harvey G. and Orpha M. (Chanler) Byrer. Sarah married Calvin DeMotte on August 14, 1940.
Sarah was a member of the Odon Christian Church. She was a homemaker, farm wife and a wonderful cook who enjoyed her family.
Survivors include one niece, Judith K. Ligon of Atlanta, GA and one nephew, Irven R. Byrer of Odon.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Calvin DeMotte; her stillborn son, Richard DeMotte; sister, Daisy C. Roach; brother, Herschell Byrer and niece, Hazel May Roach.
Graveside services are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Odon, Indiana with Bro. Richard Smith officiating.

Anna Fields

Anna Laura Fields, 76, of Loogootee, passed away at 1:20 p.m. on November 20, 2015 at her home.
She was born September 21, 1939 in Odon, IN to the late John T. and Jessie (Hamilton) Kaiser.
Anna was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was a very active member in the St. Mary – Barr Township Altar Society. She was a member of the Washington Boat Club.
She loved camping and traveling to Florida for the winter. Gardening was her passion while her children were growing up. She collected bells and enjoyed hummingbirds.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents, John T. and Jessie (Hamilton) Kaiser; sisters, Alice (Joe) Mattingly, Mary Lundy and Norma (David) Fox; brother, Ron Kaiser and John M. Kaiser; brother-in-law, Robert Summers.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Charles T. William Feagans

William I. Feagans Jr., 68, of Loogootee, passed away at 12:40 a.m. on November 19, 2015 at Loogootee Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born December 5, 1946 in Montgomery, IN to the late William I. and Margaret (Duncheon) Feagans.
William graduated from Montgomery High School in 1965. He retired from NWSC Crane in 1999. He was the past president of St. Vincent De Paul and a current member of the Board of Directors for the St. Vincent De Paul Store. He was a member of Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William I. and Margaret (Duncheon) Feagans; infant brother, Douglas Joseph Feagans and nephew, Derek Arvin.
William is survived by his wife, Janice (Cutshall) Feagans; brother, Louis “Ed” (Connie) Feagans of Martinsville; sisters, Peggy Arvin and special friend Paul Leo Strange of Loogootee and Mary Teresa (Dale) Miller of Montgomery; sister-in-law, Phyllis (James) Lannan of Loogootee and many nieces and nephews.

Merle Lewis
April 30, 1925 — Nov. 19, 2015

Merle Eugene Lewis, 90, of Springville, died Thursday at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born April 30, 1925, in Martin County, he was the son of James Whitcomb and Edith (Waggoner) Lewis. He was a graduate of Trinity Springs High School with the Class of 1943 where he played basketball and met his future wife, Roberta who was a cheerleader. He married Roberta Maxine Freeman on Jan. 1, 1944 and she survives. He retired as a railroad maintenance supervisor for NWSC Crane, and was a lifelong farmer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving as a Pharmacist Mate and was a member of the Owensburg Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta, of Springville; a son, James Leslie Lewis and wife, Darlene, of Springville; two daughters, Jeanette Parsley and husband, Clovis, of Bedford and Karen DeFord and husband, Rex, of Honey Grove, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Delores Lewis; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jan J. Armour; two brothers, Walter Grant and Russell Martin Lewis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in the Owensburg Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary where a church service will be conducted at 6 p.m. with Preston Boles officiating. 



LaRue Johnson
 Oct. 28, 1928 — Nov. 17, 2015

LaRue Norman Johnson, 87, formerly of Mitchell, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, at Cumberland Pointe Health Campus in West Lafayette.
Born Oct. 28, 1928, in Leipsic, he was the son of Norman and Faye (Stephenson) Johnson. He married Shirley Ann Isom Dec. 26, 1951.
LaRue graduated from Orleans High School in 1946 and Purdue University in 1950. He had been employed as an engineer for Sealtest Dairy and was also a farmer. He was a member of Carters Creek Christian Church and Rob Morris Masonic Lodge No. 282 F&AM.
LaRue was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Johnson of West Lafayette; a daughter, Norma (Bill) Fielding of West Lafayette; a son, Mark (Bonnie) Johnson of Columbia, Mo.; grandchildren, Rebecca Fielding of Indianapolis, and James Johnson of Columbia, Mo., and his siblings, Franklin Johnson of Hawaii, Esther Hawkins of Indianapolis, Leon “Bill” Johnson of Greeensburg and Wanda Carroll of Bloomington.
His parents preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with the Rev. Wade Judy officiating. Charles Burgess

Charles Edwin Burgess, 80, Brownstown, died Friday at 1:25 a.m. at his residence.
He was born March 7, 1935, in Orleans, Ind., to Merrill Burgess and Lucille Velcin Burgess. He married Mary Ann Harlow and she survives.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Mark Burgess of Nacogdoches, Texas and Andrew Schoenherr of Brownstown; an adopted son, Randall Tomes of Noblesville; four daughters, Cynthia Burgess Draper of Walla Walla, Wash., Sherill Grotheer of Las Vegas, Nev., Julie Schoster of Aurora, and Beth Ann Schoenherr White of Brownstown; several grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, William Burgess of Seymour; two sisters, Barbara Sorrells and Marilyn Sadek, both of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Burgess.
He attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Brownstown. He belonged to the Currier and Ives Collection Club. He was an electrician for 20 years and also worked several years as a physical plant director at Finneytown Public Schools in Cincinnati, Ohio
He loved antiques and working outdoors.
Funeral service will be Saturday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Brownstown with Pastor Jeffrey Patterson as the minister. Friends may call Saturday, Nov. 28, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Brownstown. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Brownstown.

Marcella Jo Elliott
Nov. 3, 1958 — Nov. 7, 2015

Marcella Jo Elliott, 57, Bedford, passed away Saturday morning at her residence.
Born Nov. 3, 1958, in Orangeville, she was the daughter of Oscar and Mary Alice (Greene) Russell. She married Michael Carl Elliott Sept. 29, 1979, and he preceded her in death Oct. 1, 2014.
Marcella was a qualified medical assistant, and had worked at Mitchell Manor. She was previously employed at Noe’s Chicken House and Essex.
Marcella was a member of the Bride of Christ Fellowship.
She enjoyed spending long days going to yard sales and running errands with her mother and her sister, with whom she was very close. Marcella loved going on camping trips with her family. She was especially fond of all of her nieces and nephews, and she loved devoting her time and attention to all of them! Michael had given her the gift of a little dog (named Baby Girl) that quickly became her constant companion. Marcella was a kind and warm-hearted woman with many friends, and she was loved by all!
Surviving are her mother, Mary Russell of Mitchell; brother, Paul Eugene Russell of Orleans; sister, Sherry Lynn Russell of Mitchell; sisters-in-law, Sandra Bishop and Wanda Sanders, both of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
Her father and her husband preceded her in death.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Mitchell.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford.

Bonnie M. Roberts
Dec. 3, 1939 — Nov. 17, 2014

Bonnie Marie Roberts, 74, Huron, passed away at 8:35 p.m. on Monday at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Dec. 3, 1939, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Charles and Lillie Mae (Pitman) Simpson. She married Walter Eugene Roberts April 15, 1961.
Bonnie worked a few years at the Trav-Ler plant in Orleans, where she met her husband-to-be. She was a homemaker until beginning a 34-year career with the Mitchell Community Schools. Bonnie worked in the Huron Elementary School cafeteria until the school closed in 1982. She was then a teacher’s aide for 18 years at Hatfield Elementary School until her retirement in 2004.
She graduated from Huron High School in 1958 and was an active member of the Huron Church of God. Bonnie served in many capacities throughout her adult life. She was serving as the church secretary-treasurer, Sunday school secretary-treasurer, chairperson of the advisory council and president of the Ladies Missionary Society, a position she had held for 36 years at the time she became ill in September 2013. Bonnie was also a former 4-H leader and Cub Scout den mother.
Bonnie enjoyed a variety of activities such as sewing, reading, gardening and quilting, and she was known as an excellent cook. She was most content when seated on a riding mower, or the family’s small farm tractor mowing grass. Always a supporter of her husband’s and sons’ activities, she continued with the grandchildren, as she seldom missed a 4-H activity, sports event, musical, awards program or any other endeavor they might be involved with.
Surviving are her husband, Eugene Roberts of Huron; sons, Robin Eugene (Jill) Roberts and Ryan Eric (Rhonna) Roberts, all of Bedford; grandchildren, Darci, Andrew, Adam and Bret; sisters, Goldie (Kenneth) Mundy and Lucille Kelly of Columbus and Rosabelle (Randell) Knight of Huron; stepsisters, Lorene Mitchell of Oolitic and Marcia Tolbert of Williams; sisters-in-law, Betty Raney of Shoals and Shirley Mundy of Fayetteville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her father; mother, Lillie Simpson Etchison; sister, Ilene Richardson; and brothers, Harold, Jesse, Ralph and Leithel Mundy, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Brother Paul Kirby and Brother Allen Burris officiating. Burial will be in Huron Cemetery.

Tyra E. Hardwick
Oct. 7, 1943 — Nov. 7, 2014

Tyra “Ty” E. Hardwick, 71, of Bedford died at 8:41 p.m. on Friday at his residence.
Born Oct. 7, 1943, in Martin County, he was the son of Sat and Mattie (Chandler) Hardwick. He married Suzanne Short on Jan. 4, 1964, and she survives.
He had worked for Sprint Oil as a retail manager.
Survivors include his wife Suzanne of Bedford; one daughter, Dietra King and husband Tim of Bedford; one son, Trent Hardwick and wife Bobbi of Williams; four grandchildren, Braxtan Hardwick, Trinity Hardwick, Jarad King and Whitney King Dyer; four sisters, Annis Skinner of Illinois, Mildred North of Arizona, Brenda Terrell and husband Jack of Bedford and Sue Hammersley and husband Larry of Springville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Tristyn Hardwick; five brothers, Dan Wagoner, William Hardwick, Clifford Hardwick, Roe Hardwick and Bob Hardwick; and one sister, Nellie Wade.

Eugene Wilcoxen
July 27, 1936 — Dec. 25, 2014

Eugene Wilcoxen, 78, of Loogootee, passed away on Thursday.
He was born July 27, 1936 to the late Hobart and Velma (Conolty) Wilcoxen.
He retired from the U.S. Army in 1975 after 20 years of service, and retired from the Loogootee U.S. Postal Service in 2001, after 25 years of service.
He was a member of Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Loogootee. He was a member of the American Legion Post 120 and served as a past commander; Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9395 and served as a past officer; Shoals Eagles Post 2442; Loogootee Knights of Columbus.
In his retirement he served as the Martin County Veterans Affairs Officer and volunteered at Saint Vincent DePaul. His favorite past time was spending time with his grandchildren, bowling and golf.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; and one son Eugene Wilcoxen Jr.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Agnes (Wathen) Wilcoxen; daughters, Darlene (Jerry) O’Neal of Visalia, Calif., Wendy (Lyle) Furguson of Chandler, Ariz., and Becky Harbison of Loogootee; sons, Steve (Kim) Kidwell of Loogootee, Jeff Kidwell of Bloomington, and Jim Kidwell of Loogootee; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister, Naomi (Ray) Neukam of Washington; brothers, Lee (Rosemary) Wilcoxen of Franklin and Billy (Mary Beth) Wilcoxen of Mitchell.

Helen Trowbridge

Helen Trowbridge, 87, of Mitchell, died at 1:55 a.m. on Tuesday at Mitchell Manor.
Born March 9, 1927, in Shoals, she was the daughter of William Henry and Mable Roxie (Holt) Chastain. She married Dennis Trowbridge and he preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include children, Judy Watson of Needmore, Doug Trowbridge of Arkansas, Etta Gilbert of Needmore, Carol Abel and husband Bob of Bedford, Anthony Trowbridge of Bedford, Scott Trowbridge and wife Tammy of Bedford, and Lynn Trowbridge of Bedford; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-grea-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Beverly Trowbridge of Bedford.

Robert V. Hembree

Robert Vernon Hembree, 95, of Mitchell, formerly of Loogootee, died at 8:23 p.m. on Sunday at Garden Villa Nursing Home in Bedford.
He was born Aug. 9, 1919, in Rutherford Township of Martin County to the late Robert Glenn and Margaret (Altkoffer) Hembree.
On Sept. 30, 1939, he married the late Thelma Virginia (Truelove) Sanders. On the date of her death, Sept. 30, they would have celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary.
He graduated from Loogootee High School in 1938 and was a member of the Loogootee United Methodist Church and the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church in Mitchell. He was also a member of the Kiwanis and Lions’ clubs in Mitchell.
He owned three grain elevators during his life in Loogootee, Orleans and Mitchell. Vernon retired from the feed business in 1984 and began a second career as a wood worker and a violin maker. Vernon also worked at the old wood shop in Spring Mill making wood products with the old tools he crafted of the period.
He is survived by two of this three sons, Larry G. Hembree of Orleans and Randall and wife Gina Hembree of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Larry D. and wife Stephanie Hembree of Loogootee, James Randall Hembree of Orleans, Landon Hembree, currently serving with the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Norfolk, Lisa R. and husband Brian Ader of Loogootee, and Lyndsee and husband Wes Hawkins of Bloomington; along with eight great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Vernon is survived by one brother, Radus Hembree of Rutherford Township.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James V. Hembree, who was killed in Vietnam on Sept. 6, 1967; one great-granddaughter, Lexi Hembree on Sept. 6, 2005; two sisters, Marie Bauer and Dorothy Neukam.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee.  Burial will follow in Goodwill Cemetery in Loogootee.


Virginia S. Strange
June 17, 1936 — Jan. 28, 2015

Virginia Sue Gootee Strange, 77, Loogootee, passed away on Wednesday at the Loogootee Nursing Center in Loogootee.
She was born on June 17, 1936 to the late Cletus and Theresa Gootee.
Sue was a 1955 graduate of St. John High School. She earned her R.N. at St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1958 where she served as class president. She worked for many years at the Daviess County Hospital as the supervisor in the Intensive Care Unit. She also worked for several years at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford as a recovery room nurse.
Sue was passionate about being a good nurse and caring for those in need. Her peers and her patients treasured Sue for her competence and her caring. Her nursing career was cut short by a serious traffic accident in 1993. She and her husband Tom learned to love cruises as they expanded their horizons to the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and three very memorable trips to Rome in 2000, 2003 and 2005. Sue was a devoted basketball fan (St. John’s Eagles, Loogootee Lions, IU Hoosiers) and football fan (Notre Dame).
Sue is survived by her husband Thomas Strange; brother, Frank Gootee (Nancy); sister, Julie (Rick) Turner and children Andrea and Max Turner; uncle, Joseph Louis Padgett; two brothers-in-law Tim and Ed Strange; four sisters-in-law, Karen Norris, Joan (Leo) Haag, Kay Love and Francie (Fred) Doyle and more than 20 nieces and nephews on the Strange side.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Terri Sullivan Calloway.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Loogootee, officiated by Very Rev. J. Kenneth Walker. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at the Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee, Indiana.

Virginia L. Waggoner
Sept. 30, 1923 — Jan. 17, 2015

Virginia Love Waggoner, 91, Mitchell, passed away at 2:05 a.m. Saturday at White River Lodge in Bedford.
Born Sept. 30, 1923, in Lawrence County, Ill., she was the daughter of Asbury and Anna (Sanders) Mills. She married Harvey Russell Waggoner Nov. 15, 1947, and he preceded her in death May 17, 1996.
Virginia was a homemaker.
Surviving are her daughter, Delores A. Norrington of Bedford; grandchildren, Darren (Amy) Norrington of Mitchell and Angela Norrington of Bedford; great-grandchildren, Andrew Norrington, Ian Norrington and Jenna Norrington; sisters, Darlene Hanna of Montgomery, Ill., and Delila Dewey of Warrenton, Mo.; and sister-in-law, Joan Mills of Chauncey, Ill.
Her parents; husband; son-in-law, Darrell Norrington; infant sister, Regina Martella Mills; and brother, Artrel Mills, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with the Rev. Dr. Robert Courson officiating. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Goodwill Cemetery in Loogootee.

Tracy L. Hillenburg
Aug. 16, 1944 — Jan. 21, 2015

Tracy Lee Hillenburg, 70, of Shoals, passed away at 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday at his residence.
He was born Aug. 16, 1944, in Lawrence County to Earl and Rhea Dawn (Tims) Hillenburg.
Tracy enjoyed country music and singing. He loved to travel and made several trips to Texas and Alaska.
He was a retired self-employed contractor. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Sue (Hovis) Hillenburg of Shoals; one sister, Kelly Reed of Mitchell; daughters, Tina Marie and Joe Nichols of Bloomfield and Athena Ann and Wade Caudill of Bedford; sons, Triston and Tammy Baker of Silverville and Tracy and Susan Hillenburg of Oolitic; two stepsons, William R. Hamblin and Steve R. Hamblin of Shoals; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
 He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Rhea Dawn Hillenburg; brother, Kevin Hillenburg; and two sisters, Peggy Bundy and Marsha Horton.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hickory Ridge Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Charlie White

Charlie Lee White of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, January 18, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on October 21, 1922, in Cookeville, TN, he was the son of Jack and Jennie (Seabolt) White.  He married Mildren Broady on June 18, 1930, and she survives.
Also surviving are three daughters:  Rosemary Hunsucker, Carol Reed, and Toni McNabb, all of Mitchell, IN; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by one son, Francis Lee White; one brother, T.J. White; and three sisters, Ruth Lawson, Helen and Ellen White.
He was a cattle trader, farmer, and retired franchise owner of Kentucky Fried Chicken in Paoli, Mitchell, Bedford, and Loogootee.  A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.
Services for Charlie White will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 21st, at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Jones officiating.  Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Chris Taylor

Chris Taylor of Mitchell, IN, died Friday February 18, 2000, at Mitchell Manor.  Born on September 3, 1930, in Orange County, IN, he was the son of Dave and Odie (Moffatt) Taylor.  He married Edith May Craft, and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, John Taylor of Houston, TX, and Scott Taylor of Jacksonville, FL; one daughter, Rebecca Mayabb of Springfield, MO; two step-sons, Tandy Gibson and Larry Gibson, both of Shoals, IN; four step-daughters:  Mabel Scarlett of Hillsboro, OR, Mary Tackett of Huron, IN, Sabrina Terrell and Susanna Connerly, both of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Menlo Taylor of Orange County, IN, and Bud Taylor of Nashville, TN; three sisters:  Martha Whalin of Mitchell, IN, Margaret Walton of Paoli, IN, and Helen Matthews of Princeton, IN; seventeen grandchilderen, and two great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
He was a retired employee of the Ralph Rogers Company and was a farmer.  He was a member of Bonds Chapel United Methodist Church in Orleans.
Services for Chris Taylor will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 22nd, at Bonds Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Margie Abel

Margie Alice Abel of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, February 11, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on January 25, 1933 in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Gladys (Bowden) Parsons.  She married Roy L. Abel and he survives.
Also surviving are four daughters:  Debbie Carol Johnson and Virginia Christine Abel-Bartlett, both of Bloomfield, IN, Karen Jean Abel of Dallas, TX, and Shannon Ann Abel of Mitchell, IN; her mother of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Mary Lois Spaulding of Indianapolis; two brothers, James Vernon Parsons of Shoals, IN, and Donald Gene Parsons of Mitchell, IN; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one sister, Christina Marie Parsons.
She was a member of the Mitchell Church of Nazarene.

Walter Cornett

Walter Cornett of Williams, IN, died Tuesday, February 1, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on December 19, 1927, in Diablock (Perry County), KY, he was the son of Boyd and Mary (McLemore) Cornett.  He married Allene Adams on August 4, 1951, and she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Warren Cornett of Williams, IN; three sisters:  Salley Daviess of Alabama, Hattie Bowman of Melbourne, FL, Georgia Plummer of Williams, IN; two brothers, Fred Cornett of Williams, IN, and Leonard Cornett of Shoals, IN; and one step-granddaughter, Deanna Johnson of Williams, IN;  He was preceded in death by one sister, Bertie Keith, and six brothers:  Lawrence, Robert, William, Johnny, Vernon, and Troy.
He retired from NAD Crane, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.  He was a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church of Williams, where he was a deacon and treasurer.

David Norris

David L. Norris, Sr. of Bedford, IN, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on October 28, 1944, in Loogootee, he was the son of Delbert Simpson and Mae Francis (Holland) Norris.  He married Rosann Enochs on June 29, 1968, and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, David Norris of Bloomfield, IN,, and Brian Norris of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Kim Evans of Zanesville, OH, and Wendy Norris of Bloomington, IN; four brothers:  Charlie Norris of Bloomfield, IN, Gary Norris of Burns City, IN, Ray Norris of Loogootee, IN, and Donnie Norris of Yuma, AZ; two sisters, Diane Wood of Carmel, IN, and Barbara Cannon of Evansville, IN; twelve grandchildren; two host sons, Amilcar Bernal and Juan Pablo Jimeniz, both of Cali, Colombia; and one host daughter, Verena Nichler of Moers, Germany.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marcella Fuhs.
He worked at General Electric in Bloomington and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bedford.

Harley Webster

Harley C. Webster of Bloomington, IN, formerly of Williams, IN, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on May 15, 1915, in Martin County, IN, he was the son of Ira F. and Melinda Ellen (McCall) Webster.  He married Madeline Wright on April 4, 1942, and she died May 2, 1997.
Surviving are five sisters:  Ruth Wray of Mitchell, IN; Bernice Williams of Odon, IN; Alta Ritchey of Bedford, IN; Geraldine Bridwell of Florida, and Josephine George of Williams, IN.  He was preceded in death by four brothers:  Denver, Haskel "Doc", Rex, and Ira Webster, Jr.; and one sister, Alberta Mattingly.
He was retired from Central Foundry Division of General Motors and was a farmer.  He was a member of the St. Paul Methodist Church in Bloomington.

Mona Beauchamp

Mona Diane Beauchamp of Bedford, IN, died Friday, April 28, 2000, in an auto accident in Greene County, IN.  Born on May 6, 1945, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Jess and Gladys (Covey) Flynn.
Surviving are her fiance, Robert Richard of Sandburn, IN; three daughters, Sue Gould, Jamie Beauchamp and Jennifer Cassidy, all of Bedford, IN; four brothers:  Joe Flynn of Bloomington, IN, Jim, Lanny Mack, and Hubert Flynn, all of Bedford, IN; one sister, Mari Lou Combs of Mitchell, IN; five grandchildren, two aunts and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Nancy and Karen Sue Flynn.
She was head of housekeeping for Indiana Laborers Training Institute.  She was a member of Laborers Union and attended Bedford Baptist Temple.

Mary M. Harp

Mary M. Harp of Bedford, IN, formerly of Williams, IN, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on April 3, 1913, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Wilson and Louella (Baker) Baker.  She married E. Ward Harp on September 9, 1930, and he died February 6, 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Marie Medley of Williams, IN, and Ruby Bray of Bedford, IN; two sons, Allen Harp of Oolitic, IN, and George Harp of East Oolitic, IN; two sisters, June Hunt of New Lebanon, IN, and Ethel Groves of Washington, IN; twelve grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandson, and several nicees and nephews.  She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Williams, IN.

Verna Chapman

Verna L. Chapman of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, April 15, 2000 at Hospitality House.  Born on October 10, 1917, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Elmer and Amanda (Price) Spinks.  She married Kenneth E. Porter and he preceded her in death.  She married Bill Chapman, and he preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Kern of Bedford, IN; three brothers:  Orville Spinks of New Palestine, IN, Leo Spinks and Dale Spinks, both of Bedford, IN; three sisters:  Maude Emery of Indianapolis,, Goldie Little of Kentucky, and Alice Arnold of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by two sons:  Carl Porter and Stephen J. Badgley; one brother, Sam Spinks; and three sisters:  Gladys Walker, Inez Mowat and Lois Davenport.
She was a member of the Older Americans in Orleans and was of Protestant faith.
There will be private service for Verna Chapman at a later date.  Burial will be in Dishman Cemetery, north of Owensburg, IN.  There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.  Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.


Harold Johnson

Harold Thomas Johnson of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at his residence.  Corn on July 15, 1939, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Coy and Elsie (George) Johnson.  He married Patricia Marie Williams Walls on January 13, 1975, and she survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Janice Hattabauth of Mitchell, IN; his mother of Mitchell, IN; three step-sons:  Roger Walls and Patrick Walls, both of Mitchell, IN, and Richard Walls of Sunman, IN; one step-daughter, Rita Troxell of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Wanda Long of Florida; one half-brother, David Johnson of Shoals, IN; four half-sisters:  Ruth Johnson, Kim Johnson and Sarah Johnson, all of Florida, and Dotty Johnson of Shoals, IN; and thirteen grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his father.
He was retired from Essex Group Inc and was an Army veteran.  He was a member of the Indiana National Guard and the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250 in Mitchell.
There will be graveside services for Harold Johnson at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 24th, at Mitchell Cemetery with William Williams officiating.  Military rites will be accorded by the Cecil C. Beulah Freed

Beulah L. Freed of Orleans, IN, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at the  Paoli Convalescent Center.  Born on March 14, 1915, in Washington County, IN, she was the daughter of Samuel Manson and Hazel Pearl (Johnson) McClintock.  She married Roscoe J. Freed on November 1, 1944, and he died November 6, 1986.
Surviving are four daughters:  Barbara Elrod of Orleans, IN, Patricia Perkins of Paoli, IN, Jenny Blevins of Hardinsburg, IN, and Linda Shelton of Campbellsburg, IN; two brothers, William and Donald McClintock, both of Orleans, IN; five sisters:  Margaret Jean, Violet Magner, Bonnie Busick, and Juanita Gromer, all of Orleans, IN, and Marilyn Jones of Shoals, IN; fourteen grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Carl McClintock, and one sister, Mildred McClintock.
She had been employed at Trav-Lers Radio.  She was a member of the North Brown Circle Homemakers Club and the Saltillo Christian Church, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher.

John Green

John H. Green of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at his residence.  Born on June 28, 1914, in Loogootee, IIN, he was the son of John L. and Nellie (Payne) Green.
Surviving are his wife, Judith Green of Mitchell, IN; five sons:  Charles Green of Mitchell, IN, Ralph Green of Bedford, IN, James, Gary and Howard Green, all of Paoli, IN; three daughters: Mary Russell of Mitchell, IN, Martha Collins of Bedford, IN, and Darla Martin of Paoli, IN; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen (Wagner) Gree in 1988; one son, Joe Green; six brothers, and two sisters.
He was retired from Spring Mill State Park.  An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250, Mitchell.

Robert Gammon

Robert Lee Gammon, Sr., of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at his residence.  Born on August 5, 1940, in Martin County, IN, he was the son of Roman and Margaret Irene (Terrell) Gammon.  He married Sue J. Baker on December 24, 1959, and she preceded him in death on May 4, 1999.
Surviving are two sons:  Robert L. Gammon, Jr. and Donald B. Gammon, both of Mitchell;  one daughter, Renaudia S. White, of Paoli;   two brothers:  Lester Gammon and Gerald Gammon, both of Shoals; one sister, Margaret Campbell, of Lexington, IN; and one grandchild.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Wilma Stroud.
He was an employee of Dana Corporation and a 1958 graduate of Shoals High School.  He was of Protestant faith and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Services for Robert Lee Gammon, Sr.  will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2000, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with the Reverend Rick Christman officiating.  Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.   Pallbearers will be Gerald Gammon, Jr., Andrew Truesdale, David Blain Guthrie, Dean White, B.J. William McCart

William Leon "Bill" McCart of Orleans, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, and Port Charlotte, FL, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at Vencor Hospital in Greenwood.  Born on November 12, 1927, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Perry and Emma (York) McCart.  He married Anna M. Taflinger on April 15, 1949, and she survives.
Also surviving are one son, William Christopher McCart of Orleans, IN; one daughter, Cynthia Lynn McCart of Cape Coral, FL; three sisters:  Bonnie Allen of Gulfport, FL, Mary Ruth Dyer of Seymour, IN, and Olive Eager of Mitchell, IN; and two grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters:  Katherine Wright, Jewell Zimmerman, Fern Wicker, and Anna Louise Eggers; and three brothers:  Chriss, Otha, and Lowell McCart.
He was a mason and former owner of McCart's Swimming Pools, Seawalls, and Docks in Port Charlotte, FL.  He and his wife had previously owned and operated an apartment building in Orleans, IN.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and received the Victory, American Area, and Asiatic-Pacific ribbons.  He organized the White River Bow Hunters, served as a Boy Scout leader, and was a member of the American Legion Post #61 in Shoals.  He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Presbyterian Church in Port Charlotte, where he sang in the choir.

Delbert Spicer of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on May 2, 1935, in War Creek, KY, he was the son of Green and Cappie (Spicer) Spicer.  He married Cheryl Smith, and she survives.
Also surviving are four sisters:  Sarah Wyatt of Fayettevile, IN, Nannnie Tharp of Shoals, IN, Eliza Waggoner of Bryantsville, IN, and Effie Smith of Mitchell, IN; four brothers:  Green Spicer, Jr. of Mitchell, IN, Lonnie Spicer of Palmyra, IN, Asberry Spicer of Mississippi, and Raymond Cecil Spicer of Bedford, IN.  He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers:  Jesse, Homer, and Ollie James Spicer.
He was a retired truck driver for the Lawrence County Highway Department and was of Baptist faith.

Betty Edmonson

Betty L. Edmonson of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on April 20, 1927, in Orange County, IN, she was the daughter of Paul and Ida Mae (Moffitt) Russell.  She married Phillip Edmonson, and he survives.
Also surviving are three sons:  Duane Edmonson and Jeffrey Edmonson, both of Mitchell, IN, and Anthony Edmonson of Morganton, NC; two brothers,  William Russell of Loogootee, IN, and Gene Russell of Mitchell, IN; three sisters:  Ruth Burlington of Orleans, IN, Mae Taylor of Charlestown, IN, and Catherine Compton of Gary, IN; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.  She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Roy and Manson Russell.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of God.

Roy Freeman

Roy E. Freeman of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at his residence.  Born on September 5, 1921, in Williams, IN, he was the son of Ellis E. and Mary E. (Chapman) Freeman.  He married Wilma Jean George, and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Robert E. Freeman of Santa Maria, CA, and Jerry Freeman of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, John Freeman of Bedford, IN, and Rex Freeman of Mitchell, IN; four sisters:  Vera Wagner of Bedford, IN, Velma Dorsett of Lawrence County, IN, Virginia Atchison of Loogootee, IN, and Violet Bowers of Indianapolis;  three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was retired from Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center and Funks Seed Co.  He had served on the Lawrence County Alcohol Beverage Board.   An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post 33.  He was a member of the Bryantsville Church of Christ.

Coy Arnold

Coy Edward Arnold of Bedford, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at his residence.  Born on January 10, 1918, in Mannington, KY, he was the son of Sterling and Eva Jane (Stokes) Arnold.  He married Virginia Louise Freeman on August 10, 1938, and she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Edward Eugene Arnold of Elnora, TN; three daughters:  Donna Carol Pannell of Tampa, FL, Judith Diane Coburn and Donnetta Gail Eads, both of Bedford, IN; one niece who was raised in the home, Tina Sluder of Bedford, IN; one brother, Forrest Odel Arnold of Hammond, IN; twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by three brothers, Owen, Thurston, and Archie Arnold; and two sisters, Lorene Hancock and Sybil Latham.
He was a bricklayer and retired from General Motors Powertrain in 1986.  He was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of Faith Mission Church, and United Auto Worker Local #440.
Services for Ed Arnold will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3rd, at Faith Mission Church with the Rev. George Wade

George Robert (Bob) Wade of Shoals, IN, died Wednesday 26, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on December 6, 1944, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of George H. and Ethel Mae (Gee) Wade.  He married Mary E. Thomas on May 8, 1965, and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Brian Wade of Shoals, IN, and Scott Wade of Bedford, IN; his parents of Shoals, IN; three brothers:  Larry Dean and Tommy Wade, both of Mitchell, IN, and Ronald Wade of Shoals, IN; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Benny Wayne Wade in 1947, and his grandparents.
He worked in auto body repair and as a mechanic and served ten years in the Indiana National Guard.

Bobby Grogan

Bobby L. Grogan of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on October 17, 1930, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Oscar A. and Maggie {Grogan} Grogan.  He married Norma Flinn on October 16, 1950.
Surviving are his former wife, Norma of Mitchell, IN; two sons, Dennis Grogan of Bedford, IN, and Keith Grogan of Mitchell, IN; four daughters:  Viola Brown and Lisa Middleton, both of Mitchell, IN, Debbie Johnson of Bedford, IN, and Cathy Chapman of Oolitic, IN; his mother, Maggie Chastain of Bedford, IN; four brothers:  Marvin, David, and Jackie Grogan, all of Bedford, IN, and Millard Grogan of Shoals, IN; five sisters:  Louella Jones, Zelma Cole, and Imilda Lessig, all of Mitchell, IN, and Shirley Yaney and Naomi Sue McDaniels, both of Bedford, IN;sixteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, one aunt, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father; step-father, Ray Chastain; two sister, Eva Oliver and Penny Grogan.
He worked for the Bedford Street Department and was a member of Moose Lodge #689 and Eagles Lodge #654.

Lotus Meadows

Lotus L. Pipher Endris McCullough Meadows of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, August 30, 2000, at Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, IN;  Born on August 10, 1920 in Dugger, IN, she was the daughter of Charlie and Nellie (Cecil) Fisher.  She had married Arthur Endris, Glen McCullough, and Paul Meadows, all of whom preceded her in death.
Surviving is one daughter, Phyllis Endris Johnson of Speedway, IN; one son-in-law, Rick Johnson, who was her caregiver; two sisters, June Holbert of Bedford, IN and Hazel Johnson of Loogootee, IN; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by three husbands; two brothers, Chester and Charles Pipher; and one sister, Mabel Roberts.
She was retired from Westinghouse in Bloomington.  She was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.

Ellen Williams

Ellen Maria Williams of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, August 25, 2000, in Bloomington Hospital.  Born on February 4, 1917, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Carl B. and Inez (Menaugh) Walker.  She married William E. Williams and he died in 1990.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Ellen Eckensberger of Bloomington, IN; five sons:  Ronald Williams, David Williams, and Stephen Williams, all of Mitchell, IN, and Dennis Williams and Gary Williams, both of Bloomington, IN; two sisters, Maryon Daugherty or Yorktown, IN, and Sue Andis of Orlando, FL; two brothers, Paul Walker of Yorktown, IN, and Bryan Walker of Loogootee, IN; twenty grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, three sisters, and two grandsons.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and Springmill Homemakers.

Billie J. Evans

Billie J. Evans of Huron passed away Saturday, December 6, 1997, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born May 11, 1933, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Roscoe and Pauline (Leonard) Grider.  She married Wayne P. Evans on January 1, 1959, and he preceded her in death on September 11, 1997.
Surviving are two daughters:   Starr Norwalt of Ellettsville and Brandi Dean Kent of Bloomington; and three stepsons: Wayne Evans of Loogootee, Calvin Evans of Shoals, and Anthony Evans of Bedford.   She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Don Richard Grider.
She was a member of the Huron Baptist Church.

Helen Newbold

Helen Newbold of Shoals, formerly of Indianapolis, died Thursday, November 20, 1997 at Daviess County Hospital in Washington, IN. She was born July 26, 1911, in Indianapolis. She married George "Pete" Newbold on December 24, 1971, in Bedford, and he survives.
Other survivors are one step-son: Richard Newbold of Indianapolis; one step-daughter, Jeannie Levitt of Indianapolis; four step grandchildren; and several step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two step-grandsons, and a brother.
She was a homemaker and a member of Moose Lodge Auxiliary #801 of Bedford.

James F. Hoffman

James F. Hoffman of Springville died Monday, November 17, 1997, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on March 23, 1941, in Martin County, he was the son of Herbert and Marie (Schwindt) Hoffman. He married Helen Adams on June 27, 1986, and she survives.

Also surviving are his mother, Marie Hoffman; two daughters: Connie Roush and Susan Diamond, both of Shoals; two stepsons: Dennis Adams of Bloomington and David Adams of Ellettsville; two brothers: Donald Hoffman of Bedford and Stephen Hoffman of Shoals; two sisters: Wilma Wampler and Mary Fulford, both of Bloomington; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

He retired as a heavy equipment operator at U.S. Gypsum with thirty-one years of service and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Loogootee.

Vernon Cornett

Vernon Cornett of Williams died Thursday, November 6, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford. Born in Hazard, KY, on February 9, 1924, he was the son of Boyd and Mary (McLemore) Cornett. He married Phyllis Wright in 1951, and she preceded him in death in 1966. He married Barbara Reynolds in 1967, and she survives.

Also surviving are two step-sons: Tom Reynolds of Williams, IN, and Rick Reynolds of Bedford; five step-grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; four brothers: John Cornett of Williams, Fred Cornett, Walter Cornett, all of Williams, and Leonard Cornett of Shoals, IN; three sisters: Georgia Plummer of Williams, Sally Davies of Talladega, AL, and Hattie Bowman of Montgomery, AL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Lawrence, Robert, Bill, and Troy Cornett; and one sister, Bertie Keith.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was retired in 1973 from NAD Crane and was a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Williams.

Mary Pedigo

Mary Cox Pedigo of Oolitic died Friday, October 17, 1997, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born May 9, 1921, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Jordan and Frieda (Kendall) Riggle. She married Berlin Cox, who died in 1969, and Ken Pedigo, who died in 1984.

Surviving are five sons: David Cox and John Cox, both of Bedford, Joe Cox of Indianapolis, Ray Cox of West Baden, and Paul Cox of Oolitic; eighteen grandchildren; and twenty-nine great grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death also by one daughter, Wanda June Wilson; one son, Darrell J. Cox; one sister, Eva Probasco; two brothers, Frank Riggle and Shirley Riggle; and one grandson.

She had worked as a nurse's aide at Dunn Memorial Hospital for seventeen years and was a member of Shoals Christian Church.

Robert W. Denny

Robert W. Denny of Mitchell died Friday, October 10, 1997, at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. Born in Shoals, IN, on April 22, 1935, he was the son of Etta Marie Denny. He married Thelma Marie Jones, and she survives.

Surviving also are one stepson, Donald Jones of Manteca, CA; three stepdaughters: Deborah Sykes and Bonita Reynolds, both of Bedford, and Regina Hall of Coeur d'Alene, ID; twelve step-grandchildren; and three step-great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Robert Denny will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 14th, at Haverly Mortuary in Mitchell with the Rev. Wayne Pendley officiating. Earl Johnson

Earl "Pete" Johnson died Thursday, October 2, 1997, at the Loogootee Nursing Center. The son of Clyde and Ida (Tolbert) Johnson, he was born in Lawrence County on March 2, 1932.

Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Probasco of Shoals, IN, and Andrea Johnson of Australia; one granddaughter, Tonia Probasco of Shoals, IN; two brothers, Edward Johnson of Mitchell, IN, and Ernie Johnson of Mooresville, IN; one sister, Lena Carver of Mitchell, IN; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was retired from the U. S. Army after twenty years of service, and was a member of the V.F.W. in Mitchell.

Services for Earl "Pete" Johnson will be Saturday, October 4th, at 11:00 a.m. Graveside rites at Port William Cemetery will be accorded by the American Legion Gillen Post. Friends may call Friday, Oct. 3rd, from 4-9 p.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.



William Casey

William Casey of Bedford died Monday, December 1, 1997, at his residence.  Born August 3, 1910, in Loogootee, he was the son of John Harrison and Pearl (Fletcher) Casey.  He married Luella Burgess on May 7, 1954, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, John William Casey of Fort Lauderdale, FL; one daughter, Jean Hubbard of Issue, MD; and two grandchildren.   Preceding him in death were two brothers and three sisters.

He was a tool and die maker supervisor and had worked in research and development at the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane.  He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Elnora Batman

Elnora Elizabeth Batman of Shoals died Monday, September 29, 1997, at Bloomington Hospital. Born in Monroe County on November 16, 1932, she was the daughter of Walter and Lela (Patton) Hadden. She married Walter L. Batman on October 3, 1981, and he survives.

Surviving in addition to her husband of Shoals are two sons, Preston Batman of Shoals and Lee Palmer of Ellettsville, IN; five daughters: Lucy Beavans and Shirley Palmer, both of Bloomington, Donna Stilmack of Flagstaff, AZ, Karen Hewitt and Rebecca Batman, both of Bedford; eight grandchildren; four brothers, Melvin, Lloyd, Floyd, and Roger Hadden, all of Bloomington, IN; and three sisters: Arlenia Hadden of Madison, IN, Eva Eagan of Bedford, Angie Mosier of Indiana. She was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters, and her parents.

She was a homemaker.

Brenda K. Taylor

Brenda K. Taylor of Bedford died Friday, January 2, 1998, at her home.  Born in Lawrence County on February 2, 1948, she was the daughter of Arthur and Lois Marie (Beasley) Coulter.

Surviving are five daughters:  Laura Ann Gray of Bloomington, Melissa Marie Tanner of Bedford, Dottie Jane Troutman of Shoals, Kimberly Sue Collins of Daytona Beach, FL, and Sara Marie Tuttle of Dover Hill; two sons:  Paul Anthony Watts of Lost Creek, KY, and David Johnson of Shoals;  two brothers:   Arthur Coulter of Medora and Billy Coulter of Gasden; twenty-one grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by two sisters, one grandchild, and one great grandchild.

She was a homemaker.

Louise B. Wheeler

Louise B. Wheeler of Needmore died Thursday, January 28, 1998, at the home of her daughter in Fayetteville.  Born on November 19, 1943, in Daviess County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Catherine (Colvin) Spaulding.  She married Herbert Wheeler on June 7, 1964, and he survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Judy Hall of Fayetteville; one son, Herbert Wheeler Jr. of Bedford; four brothers: Silas Spaulding of Jasper, IN, Frank Spaulding of Scottsburg, IN, Jim Spaulding of Washington, IN, and Tony Spaulding of Mitchell; six sisters:  Margaret Bridgewater of Loogootee, IN,  Martha Cox of Sullivan, IN, Pat Crane of Vincennes, IN, Clare Batchlor of Plainfield, IN, Mary Reed of Buddha, IN, and Carolyn Blake of Springville, IN; and three grandchildren.

She was a 1964 graduate of Alfordsville High School, a nursing assistant at Bloomington Hospital, Westview Manor and Essex in Orleans.  She was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Bedford for 34 years.

A Funeral Mass  for Louise Wheeler will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 2nd, with the Rev. Sylvia M. Milligan

Sylvia M. Milligan of Shoals, formerly of Huron, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 1998, at Martin County Health Care in Loogootee.  Born on April 24, 1904, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Enos and Rebecca (Smith) Pruett.  She first married Richmond Howerton, and he preceded her in death on January 13, 1977.  Her second marriage was to George Milligan, and he preceded her in death on July 10, 1988.

Surviving are one daughter, Jackie J. Holt of Shoals, IN; one step-daughter, Ruby Dillion of Vincennes, IN; one brother, Noble Pruett of Mitchell; and two grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husbands.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Mitchell and the Orleans Order of Eastern Star #352.

Marcella K. Harrell

Marcella K. Harrell of Bedford, formerly of Indianapolis, died Saturday, February 14, 1998, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born in Lawrence County, IN, on March 5, 1927, she was the daughter of Harry and Thelma (Link) Armstrong St.  She married Robert Harrell on September 27, 1944, and he died July 13, 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Harrell of Mulbery, IN, and Alan Harrell of Bedford; two brothers, Harry Armstrong Jr. of Bedford and Danny Armstrong of Loogootee, IN; three sisters, Peggy Humphrey of Springville, IN, Barbara Baker of Indianapolis, and Kay Taylor of Michigan; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, Dick, Jack, and Eddie Armstrong.

She was a homemaker.

Hollie Tolbert

Hollie Tolbert of Bedford died Friday at Vencor South Hospital in Greenwood, IN.  Born on October 29, 1917, in Huron, IN, he was the son of Walter and Leona (Wade) Tolbert. 

Surviving are one daughter, Ruth Marie Phillips of Bedford; two sons, Walter Dale Tolbert of Bedford and Hollie Eugene "Bud" Tolbert of Columbus, IN; two sisters, Maxine Reese of Nashville, IN, and Ruth Bex of Huron, IN; two brothers, Claude Tolbert of Loogootee, IN, and Johnny Tolbert of Washington, IN; twelve grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.   He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

He was retired from Hatfield Scrap Iron and Metal in Bedford.

Roscoe B. Harshaw

Roscoe B. Harshaw of Mitchell died Thursday, April 9, 1998, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.   Born on November 5, 1903, in Martin County, IN, he was the son of Joseph and Mollie (Bouseman) Harshaw.  He married Ruth E. White on October 16, 1930, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Waldo W. Harshaw of Loogootee, IN; one daughter, Phyllis Fox of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Ruth Jones of Bedford, IN; a daughter-in-law, Hildred Harshaw of Loogootee, IN; and four grandchildren, Kimberly Hopkins, Debbie Oliver, Matthew Harshaw, and Amy Hiott.

A 1923 graduate of Shoals High School, he also graduated from Central Normal College in Danville and attended Indiana State University, Indiana University, and Oakland City College. He was a member of National, State, and Lawrence County Retired Teacher Associations.  Of his 48 year teaching career, 27 years were spent in the Martin County Schools and 21 years at Burris School in Mitchell.  He retired in 1972.  He was a history conservator and compiled many scrapbooks of historical events.  He was a member of Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and was a 50 year member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge #338 F&AM.

Funeral services for Roscoe Harshaw will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 11th, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Mildred M. Wood

Mildred M. Wood of Bedford, formerly of Spencer, IN, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Bloomington Hospitality House.  Born on September 11, 1913, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of James and Minnie (Patton) Reynolds.   She married Paul "Gus" Wood, and he preceded her in death in 1984.

Surviving are four daughters:  Rosemary Franklin of Freedom, IN, Phyllis Coffey of Bloomington, IN, Janet Evans of Bedford, and Carole Gray of New Mexico; two sons, Jerry Wood of Ellettsville, IN, and Brad Wood of Bloomington, IN; four brothers:  Morris Reynolds and James E. Reynolds, both of Bedford, Thomas Reynolds o f Mitchell, IN, and Noble Reynolds of Oolitic, IN; five sisters, Josephine Farris and Dorothy Jean Philpot, both of Bedford, Lina Beth McPherson of Shoals, IN, Ruby Parenti of Cicero, IL, and Dolly Gaddy of Charlotte, N.C.; thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Donald Wood; one brother, Arlie Reynolds; two sisters, Jaunita Atteberry and Marie Boeck; and one granddaughter.

She was a homemaker and a member of Women of Moose in Bedford.  She was of Protestant faith.

Mabel C. Shaw

Mabel C. Shaw of Bedford died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on December 6, 1910, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Willis and Eliza (Lane) Bledsoe.  She married Napoleon Shaw on March 5, 1934, in Jasper, IN, and he survives.

Also surviving are one son, Samuel Lee Shaw of Bedford; one sister, Ardelle Bledsoe of Shoals; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by one son, William Shaw, five sisters, and two brothers.

She was a homemaker and a member of Englewood Baptist Church.

Kenneth M. Arthur of Oolitic, IN, formerly of Monroe County, IN, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.  Born on October 28, 1939, in Unionville, IN, he was the son of Marion and Helen (Purtlebaugh) Arthur.  He married Onnie Arms, and she survives.

Also surviving are four sons:  Kenny Arthur of Shoals, IN, Tony Arthur of Williams, IN, Rick Arthur of Seymour, IN, and Danny Arthur of Logansport, IN; three daughters:  Eva Salmon of Loogootee, IN, Lisa Graham of Oolitic, IN, and Sandy Byers of Bedford; three sisters:  Phyllis Sims, Delores Webber, and Sheila Robinson, all of Bloomington, IN; three brothers:  Melvin Arthur of Gosport, IN, Larry and Danny Arthur, both of Bloomington, IN; one step-brother, Jim Sumners; thirty-five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by five grandchildren.

He was a truck driver with Moon Freight Lines and was of Pentecostal faith.  He was a member of the Hoosier Hills CB Club and his handle was "Blue Goose".

James L. Carrico

James L. Carrico of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 24, 1998, at his residence.  Born on February 7, 1931, in Daviess County, IN, he was the son of James Leo and Freda (Kelly) Carrico.  He married Patricia A. Brown on April 28, 1956, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, James B. Carrico of Bedford; two daughters:  Michelle Johnson and Stephanie Lawson, both of Bedford; one brother, George Carrico of Carlsbad, N.M.; three sisters:  Monica Love of Espanola, N.M., Rosemary Love of Cannelburg, IN, and Suzanne Lents of Loogootee, IN; and nine grandchildren.

He was retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane and was a Korean War Army veteran.  He was a member of the Bedford Elks Lodge No. 826.

A private memorial service for James Carrico will be held at a later date.  The Day & Carter Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.   There will be no visitation at the mortuary.  Memorial contributions may be made to the White River Humane Society.


Claude Tolbert

Claude "Twig" Tolbert of Loogootee, IN, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in Jasper, IN.  Born on January 12, 1915, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Walter and Leona (Wade) Tolbert.  He married Martha L. Beavers in 1937, and she died October 20, 1984.

Surviving are five sons:  Kenny Tolbert of Mitchell, IN, Danny Tolbert of Port Charlotte, FL, Ronald Tolbert and Terry Tolbert, both of Punta Gorda, FL, and James Tolbert of Sarasota, FL; four daughters:  Norma Jackman of Washington, IN, Gail Tilbert of Punta Gorda, FL, Sheila Terry of Shertz, TX, and Patricia Bledsoe of Loogootee, IN; one brother, Johnny Tolbert of Loogootee, IN, two sisters:   Maxine Reece of Nashville, IN, and Ruth Bex of Mitchell, IN; twenty-one grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers:  Archie, Hollie, and Ray Tolbert; and two sisters:   Cornelia Richardson and Ida Johnson.

He was retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane in 1971 and was a member of Fairview Church of Christ.

Destinee Johnson

Destinee Elaine Johnson, five-month-old daughter of Lewis and Connie (Felton) Johnson of Loogootee, IN, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at the Daviess County Hospital in Washington, IN.   She was born on January 25, 1998, in Bedford, IN.

Surviving in addition to her parents are one sister, Latosha Johnson of Vincennes, IN; two brothers:  Aaron and Dylan Johnson, both at home; maternal grandparents:  Clyde and Phyllis Felon of Springville; paternal grandparents:  Danny and Janet Bishop of Orleans, IN; maternal great-grandfather, Clyde Felton, Sr. of Salt Lake City, Utah; paternal great-grandparents: the Rev Chester and Berniece Taylor of Falkville, AL; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by one uncle, Jason Felton.

There will be graveside services for Destinee Johnson at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 23rd, at the Owensburg Cemetery with the Rev. Harold Adams officiating.  Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 23rd, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford.


Jesse Jewell

Jesse Jewell of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on July 30, 1917, in Shoals, IN, he was the son of George W. and Rebecca J. (Crane) Jewell.  He married Esther Holtsclaw, and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are three sons:  Marion G. Jewell of Alburn, IL, Gordon M. Jewell of Wattsville, CA, and Marlin K. Jewell of Bedford, IN;  two daughters:  Jesselyn Pfleider and Nelva Salmon, both of Bedford, IN; one sister, Betty Stevens of Bedford, IN; twenty-three grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Ollie Hall

Ollie Clovis Hall of Bedford, IN, died Friday, August 14, 1998, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.  Born on February 6, 1919, in Taswell, IN, he was the son of Edd and Margaret (Morgan) Hall.   He first married Mabel Taylor on February 8, 1937.  He later married Phyllis A. Henderson on July 8, 1978, and she survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Kenneth Hall of Decatur, IL, Donald Hall of Loogootee, IN, and Terry Hall of Jasper, IN; one daughter, Janice Cossler of Jasper, IN; a step-daughter, Janet Basinger of Bedford, IN; two step-sons, Dale Rainey and Greg Rainey, both of Springville, IN; one brother, Ray Hall of Orleans, IN; thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, and a grandchildren.

Serving with the U.S. Army in World War II, he was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 for more than 50 years, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1868 of Oolitic, Bedford Eagles Lodge, and the Bedford Boat and Sportsman Club.   He was of Protestant faith.

Services for Ollie Hall will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 17th, at Day & Carter Mortuary.  Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.   Graveside military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.  Friends may call at Day & Carter Mortuary from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the service time on Monday.


Mary C. West

Mary Catherine West of Springville, IN, died Monday, August, 1998, at her residence.  Born on February 3, 1919, in Greene County, IN, she was the daughter of Ben and Ossie (Kinder) Ray.  She married Victor West on February 19, 1938, and he survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Vicky Whit of Springville, IN; two sons, Wendell and Lester West, both of Springville; one sister, Minnie Hovis of Shoals; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one son, Lonnie West, one brother, one sister, one half-brother, one half-sister, and one grandson.

She was retired from Sarkes-Tarzian and was a member of the Hobbieville Community Church.

Nadine V. Sanders

Nadine V. Sanders of Mitchell, IN, died on Saturday, August 22, 1998, at her residence.  Born on March 24, 1939, in Crawford County, IN, she was the daughter of Simon A. and Alice (Waddle) Wright.  She married John E. Sanders on Dec. 26, 1960, and he survives.

Also surviving are five sons:  Michael, Marty, Kenny, and Donald Sanders, all of Mitchell, IN, and Randy Sanders of Paoli, IN; one daughter, Tresa I. Kane of Mitchell, IN; four sisters:  Mary Howe and Starlyn Terrell, both of Orleans, IN, Geneva Slayten of Mitchell, IN, and Tanya Seitz of DePauw, IN; five brothers:   Philip Wright of Dubois, IN, Roy Wright of French Lick, IN, Jim Wright of Paoli, IN, Clois Wright of Georgia, and Lloyd Wright of Linton, IN; fourteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Oris Abel; and two brothers, Charles and Frank Wright.

She was a member of the Mitchell First Church of God and had been employed at Older American Services.

Carol S. Triplett

Carol S. Triplett of Huron, IN, died Sunday, August 16, 1998, at Bloomington Hospital.   Born on March 25, 1940, in Colson, KY, she was the daughter of Dewey and Alpha Gay (Diamond) Baker.  She married Ton Triplett on April 20, 1957, and he survives.

Also surviving are three sons:  Thomas Triplett of Paoli, IN, Dewey Triplett of Mitchell, IN, and Michael Triplett of Huron, IN; two daughters:  Brenda Gay Dotts and Linda Faye Wright, both of Bedford, IN; two brothers:  Delbert Baker of Shoals, IN, and Randall Baker of French Lick, IN; four sisters:  Jewel Miles of Detroit, MI, Dana Gammon of Shoals, Billie Jean Ball of Birdseye, IN, and Freda Hutchison of Oolitic, IN; and twelve grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of Wildwood Community Church of Jesus Christ.

Ottie M. Phillips

Ottie M. Phillips of Springville, IN, died Saturday, September 26, 1998, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on August 16, 1909, in Monticello, KY, she was the daughter of Charlie and Jane (Keith) Thompson.  She married Lee Wesley Phillips on December 23, 1924, and he died December 14, 1971.

Surviving are four sons:  the Rev. Wendell Phillips, William and Boyd Phillips, all of Springville, IN, and Danny Phillips of Shoals, IN; four daughters:  Loretta Keseric and Sue Keithley, both of Springville, IN, Evalee Phillips of Williams, IN, and Joyce Godsey of Bedford, IN; two brothers:  Arter Thompson of Springville, IN, and Robert Thompson of Bedford, IN; one sister, Alice Powell of Springville, IN; forty grandchildren, sixty-seven great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Goldie and Hobert Phillips; one daughter, Mossie Martin; three sisters: Lydia, Taylor, Pearlie Kidd, and Bessie Phillips; two brothers, Rathmiel and William Thompson; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Springville Pentecostal Mission.

Luther R. Baxter

Luther Ray Baxter of Shoals, IN, died Friday, September 25, 1998, at his residence.  Born on May 14, 1914, in Hardinsburg, IN, he was the son of Chester Grant and Erma (Masterson) Baxter.   He married Ova Christene Summers on July 25, 1934, in Bedford, IN, and she survives.

Also surviving are four sons:  Terry, Jim and Ray Allen Baxter, all of Williams, IN, and Larry Baxter of Sheboygan, WI; two daughters:   April Simmerman and Janice Williams, both of Williams, IN; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.   He was preceded in death by one son, Steve Baxter, in 1970.

He was a layout engineer and a member of the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Bedford.

Eva Mae Probasco

Eva Mae Probasco of Bedford, IN, died Friday, September 25, 1998, at her residence.  Born on April 3, 1923, in Shoals, IN, she was the daughter of Jordan and Frieda (Kendall) Riggle.   She married Kenneth Probasco on August 16, 1946, and he survives.

Also surviving are two daughters:  Linda Medaris of Bedford, IN, and Brenda Davidson of Coatsville, IN; three sons:  Alvin L. Probasco, Ronnie D. Probasco, and Kenny M. Probasco, all of Bedford, IN; a brother, Ralph Riggle of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; three children, George and Leslie Lee Needhamer, and Carolyn Probasco; two brothers, Shirley Riggle and Frank Riggle; and a sister, Mary Pedigo.

She was a homemaker and a member of Dive Christian Church.

Ralph E. Mitchell

Ralph E. Mitchell of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, September 13, 1998, at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center.  Born on June 16, 1914, in Avoca, IN, he was the son of Richard and Ethel (Nickless) Mitchell.  He married Lucy Pearl Perry on September 30, 1945, and she survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Tina Beyers of Oolitic, IN; one sister, Geneva Baugh of Bedford, IN; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one son, Robert L. Mitchell in 1990; two brothers, Richard "Jr." and Charles J. Mitchell; and two sisters, Edna Whitfield and Thelma Ricks.

He was a long-time painter at Bedford and Crane.  A World War II veteran of the Army and the Navy, he was a member of the American Legion Post No. 610 of Shoals, Veterans of the Foreign Wars Post No. 1686 of Oolitic, and AmVets.   He was also a member of A.F.G.E. (Crane) and the Painters Union Local No. 47 of Indianapolis.  He was of Pentecostal faith.

Catherine Spicer

Catherine "Cappie" Spicer, of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, September 8, 1998, at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center.  Born on March 22, 1904, in Jackson, KY, she was the daughter of James and Sarah Spicer.  She married Green Spicer in 1924, and he died in 1979.

Surviving are four daughters:  Sarah Wyatt of Bedford, IN, Nannie Tharp of Shoals, IN, Eliza Wagoner and Effie Mae Smith, both of Mitchell, IN; five sons:  Delbert and Raymond Cecil Spicer, both of Bedford, IN; Lonnie Spicer of Palmyra, IN, Asberry Spicer of Mississippi, and Green Spicer of Mitchell, IN; one brother, Roger Spicer of Jackson, KY; forty-six grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband; three sons, Jesse, Homer and Ollie Spicer; and one brother, Noah Spicer.

She was a homemaker and of Baptist faith.

Thomas E. Fox

Thomas E. Fox of Orleans, IN, died Monday, October 19, 1998, at Bloomington Hospital.  Born on April 3, 1941, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Allen "Boots" and Peggy (Mathis) Fox.  He married Deborah Staniszeski on October 26, 1979, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons:  James Fox of Mitchell, IN, and T.J. Fox of Orleans, IN; five daughters:  Peggy Gerkin and Cindy Fox, both of Mitchell, IN, Brenda Freeman of Shoals, IN, Vickie Gilstrap of Campbellsburg and Leslie Fox of Salem; two brothers:  Jerry Fox of Bedford, IN, and Rex Fox of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Shirley Keynon of Mitchell, IN; and twelve grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Fox; and three brothers.

He was an Army veteran, serving as a military policeman.   He was a retired employee of J.R. Fenton Construction Company and was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250.

Macel Mefford

Macel Mefford of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, October 10, 1998, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.   Born on January 8, 1920, she was the daughter of Mart and Della (Allen) Bough.   She married Wayne Mefford on December 6, 1945, and he died August 26, 1964.

Surviving are one son, Michael Mefford of St. Petersburg, FL; one sister, Dorothy Torphy of Bedford, IN; one brother, Dale Bough of Springville, IN; one grandson, Jon Mefford of Bedford, IN, who was raised in the home; and one great-granddaughter.  She was preceded in death by her husband and four sisters, Hazel Lanham, Lucille Miller, Ethel Haskett, and Mary Bough.

With more than thirty years of service, she retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane.  She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Shoals, and a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.   She was of Protestant faith.

Services for Macel Mefford will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 13th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Kathryn M. Baker

Kathryn M. Baker of Bedford died Monday, November 30, 1998, at Mitchell Manor Nursing Home in Mitchell.  Born July 9, 1905, she was the daughter of William and Anna (Fields) Davis.  She married John L. baker on September 8, 1923, and he died on December 21, 1974.

Surviving are 1 son, John "Jack" Baker of Mitchell; 2 daughters, Kathy Jo Steward of Sparks, Nevada, and Phyllis Ann Thompson of Powell, WY;  one sister, Lorene Conklin of Shoals, IN; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one sister, Ilene Edgar, and four brothers, Carl, Herman, Dewey, and Roy Davis.

She was a homemaker and a member of New Union Christian Church.

Naomi R. Robinson

Naomi R. Robinson of Oolitic, IN, died Thursday, November 12, 1998, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  Born on February 16, 1961, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Arnold and Agnes Jeanette (Johnson) Terry.   She married Robert Robinson in February, 1982, and he survives.

Also surviving are her mother, Agnes Terry of Williams, IN; her grandmother, Estel Johnson of Mitchell, IN; three sons, Joshua, Donald Wayne, and Matthew Todd Robinson, all at home; one brother, John Terry of Shoals, IN; three sisters, Rebecca O'Steen, Mary Hudson, and Doris Jean Terry, all of Williams, IN; two half brothers, Donald and Ronald Terry, both of Mitchell, IN; and two half sisters, Jean Bower and Doloris Tincher, both of Bedford, IN.  She ws preceded in death by her father.

She had been employed by Older Americans Services in Orleans.  She was a member of the Seventh Day Apostolic Church in Williams.

There will be a graveside service for Naomi Robinson at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 14th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Port Williams Cemetery with Brother Wimpy O'Steen officiating.  Friends may call from 8-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Haverly Mortuary.


Benjamin J. Fuesler

Benjamin J. Fuesler of Bedford, IN, formerly of Loogootee, IN, died Wednesday, November 4, 1998, at his residence.  Born on December 20, 1995, in Huntingburg, IN, he was the son of Christopher and Annetta (Wade) Fuesler.

Surviving are his mother of Bedford, IN; his father of Washington, IN; one brother, Travis Fuesler at home; one sister, Micah Parker of Springville, IN; the maternal grandparents, Marcia Wade of Loogootee and Jim Wade of Hope, IN; the paternal grandparents, Donald and Judy Fuesler of Washington, IN, the maternal great-grandmothers, Ruth Allen of Fortville, IN, and Mercedes Wade of Greencastle, IN; the paternal great-grandmother, Rosemary Wagner of Loogootee, IN; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandfather, Reason Wagner, and his maternal great-grandfather, Harry Allen.

Roy Heironimus

Roy Heironimus of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, December 15, 1998, at Westview Manor Nursing & Rehab Center.  Born on August 31, 1913, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Lee and Ada (Bruce) Heironimus.  He married Catherine Heironimus in 1943, and she died August 6, 1998.

Surviving are two sons, Roger Heironimus of Maryville, TN, and Tom Heironimus of Safety Harbor, FL; one brother, Walter Heironimus of Shoals, IN; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Rose Strosneider, and one brother, Clarence Heironimus.

A 1931 graduate of Bedford High School, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1980.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

There will be graveside services for Roy Heironimus at 11 a.m. Friday, December 18th at the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Garrett M. Gootee

Garrett M. Gootee of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, December 29, 1998, at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.  Born on August 5, 1993, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Greg A. Gootee and Beth (Vanatti) Gootee Walker.

Surviving are his father of Bedford, IN; his mother and step-father, Beth and Robert Walker of Bedford, IN; one sister, Amanda Gootee at home; one step-brother, Robert Walker, Jr., of Orleans, IN; one step-sister, Haley Walker of Orleans, IN; paternal grandparents, Jerry and Ruth Gootee of Bedford, IN; maternal grandparents, Tim and Sue Vanatti of Brazil, IN; four step-grandparents:  Robert and Suzanne Walker and David and Nancy Armstrong, all of Bedford, IN; paternal great-grandfather, James Gootee of Loogootee; maternal great-grandmother, Mary Knox of Brazil, IN; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church.

Homer Pridemore

Homer Pridemore of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, January 27th, 1999, at the Bloomington Hospital.  Boen on February 25, 1925, in Huron, IN, he was the sn of Thomas A. and Pearl (Pearson) Pridemore.

Surviving are one brother, Ernest Pridemore of Bedford, IN; three sisters:  Deloris Cannon of Shoals, IN, Alleen Recker of Mitchell, IN, and Lou Bush of Orleans, IN; nine nieces and eight nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Linza and Glenn Pridemore; and one sister, Lucille Pridemore.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Little Beaver Destroyer Squadron.  He retired from the B&O Railroad in St. Louis and was a member of the Liberty Christian Church in Orleans.

Services for Home Pridemore will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 30th, at Chastain Funeral Home with Brothers David R. Conley and Donald E. Conley officiating.  Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Virginia R. Bundy

Virginia Rose Bundy of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, February 15, 1999, at Mitchell Manor Living & Rehab Center.  Born on October 31, 1933, in Huron, IN, she was the daughter of Fred and Pearl (Hopper) Mundy.

Surviving are two sons, David Bundy of Kansas City, MO, and Richard Howell Jr. of Houston, IN; five daughters:  Sharon Bundy and Rita Mathew, both of Mitchell, Elaine King and Eileen Gerkin, both of Bedford, IN, and Debra Eastridge of Phoenix, AZ; one brother, Herschel Mundy of Mitchell; four sisters:  Dorothy Workman and Maxine Pridemore, both of Mitchell, IN, Frances Bossell of Shoals, IN, and Thelma Mason of Bedford, IN; seventeen grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

She was a member of the Mitchell Church of Christ.

Vernell T. Rainey

Vernell T. Rainey of Springville, IN, died on Tuesday, February 2, 1999, from injuries suffered in a traffic accident in Monroe County.  Born on April 9, 1920, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Fannie (Chastain) Taylor.  She married Vernor Rainey on May 29k 1937, and he died September 24, 1985.

Surviving are one son, Charles Rainey of Bloomington, IN; four sisters:  Annabell Fields of Bedford, IN, Imogene Crane and Hildred Taylor, both of Shoals, IN, and Opal Dale Mullis of Bloomington, IN; one brother, John Taylor of Bedford, IN; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Retired from RCA in Bloomington, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Stanford, the Farm Bureau Association, and a charter member of the Harrodsburg Lions Club.  She was active in the Harrodsburg Heritage Days Celebration.

Services for Vernell Rainey will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary.  Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.  Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.  Eastern Star services will be conducted at 7 p.m. by members of the Stanford Order of Eastern Star.


Lillian O. Gordon

Lillian O. Gordon of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital.   Born on August 3, 1940, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Elmer L. and Ida (Blake) Gilbert.  She married Robert E. Gordon on August 20, 1955, and he survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Vicki Cole of Freeport, IL, and Betty Robbins of Mitchell, IN; two sons, Richard and Gary Gordon, both of Mitchell, IN; four brothers:  John and Robert Gilbert, both of Loogootee, IN, Cletus and David Gilbert, both of Mitchell, IN; two sisters, Hazel Pemberton of Mitchell, IN, and Juanita Marshall of Paoli, IN; and five grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a set of sibling twins in infancy; one sister, Mary Jones, and one brother, Charlie Gilbert.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Salvation Army in Mitchell.

Sue J. Gammon

Sue J. Gammon of Mitchell, IN died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at her residence. Born on December 15, 1941, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Emery and Bessie (Harris) Baker.  She married Robert Gammon on Dec. 24, 1959, and he survives.

Also surviving are two sons: Robert Gammon Jr. and Donald Brent Gammon, both of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Renaudia White of Marengo, IN; four brothers: Roger McCoy and Ronnie Pridemore, both of Mitchell,IN,  Larry Dean Condiff of Georgia and Steve Baker of Bedford, IN; one sister, Kay Mallott of Bedford; and two grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Betty Deweese and Mary Bundy.

She was a housewife and a member of Fairview Community Church, Shoals.

Ruth Bex

Ruth Bex of Williams, IN, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at the Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center.   Born on July 31, 1920, in Lawrence County (Spice Valley South), IN, she was the daughter of Walter and Leona (Wade) Tolbert.  She married Elmer Bex on January 8, 1938, and he survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Arnold and Amel Bex, both of Mitchell, IN, and Roy Bex of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Dorothy Patton of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Maxine Reece of Nashville, IN; one brother, Johnny Tolbert of Loogootee, IN; nine grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by three sister, four brothers, and one grandson.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Fairview Church of Christ.

Carl B. Walker

Carl B. Walker, Jr. of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, August 26, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital.   Born on November 8, 1924, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Carl B. and Inez (Bryan) Walker, Sr.  He married Betty J. Chastain, and she died on April 29, 1997.

Surviving are one son, Dave Walker of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Paul Walker of Kokomo, IN, and Bryan Walker of Loogootee, IN; and two sisters, Ellen Williams of Mitchell, IN, and Sue Henderson of Orlando, FL.

He worked as a department manager at the IGA in Bedford and was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church.  An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9107 and the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250 in Mitchell.

Services for Carl Walker will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 30th, at Haverly Mortuary with the Rev Jack Shake officiating.  Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.  Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. until the service time Monday at the mortuary.


Jerry Dean Sorrells

Jerry Dean Sorrells of Williams, IN, died Tuesday, August 3, 1999, at his residence.   Born on August 26, 1949, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Lavern and Helen (Stroud) Sorrells.  He married Kathy Terrell on February 14, 1998, and she survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jami Sorrells of Loogootee, IN, and Joni Sorrells of Dubois, IN; one son, John Wayne Sorrells of Dubois, IN; four brothers:  Richard Sorrells of Florida, Ronnie Sorrells of Mitchell, IN; Mike Sorrells and twin brother, Terry Sorrells, both of Bedford, IN, and two grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a carpenter, a 1967 graduate of Mitchell High School, and a member of the Huron Baptist Church.

Carolyn Sue Bennett

Carolyn Sue Bennett of Mitchell, IN,died Monday, September 27, 1999, at her residence.  Born on July 29, 1950, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Victor Eugene and Edith Mildred (Green) Foster.  She married Larry D. Bennett on March 31, 1972, and he survives.   Also surviving are three daughters, Deanna Renee, Cheryl Diane, and Amber Leann Bennett, all of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Larry Foster of Bedford, IN, and Gerald Foster of Shoals, IN; three sisters, Sharon Benefiel of Indianapolis, Vivian Walsh of Ontario, Canada, and Gilda Snow of Bedford, IN.  She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Mike and Don Foster, and an infant sister.

She had been a secretary at Sarkes-Tarzian and Indiana University.  After eighteen years she retired from her own licensed day care.   She was a graduate of Bedford High School and Spencerian College.  She was a member of the Woodville Baptist Church and participated in the Bedford Camp Auxiliary of the Gideons International and Gideon Auxiliary Jail Ministry.

Services for Carolyn Bennett will be at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, September 30th, at the Woodville Baptist Church with the Revs. Glenn Hamer and Dwight Dunbar officiating.  Burial will follow in Talbott Cemetery.  Friends may call from 2-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon Thursday at Chastain Funeral Home, and from 2:30 p.m. until the service time at the church.  Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International.
