Lake Lemon was formed with the damming of Bean Blossom Creek in 1953 as a flood control project for Bean Blossom Creek, creating a recreation area as well a a new primary water source for the growing city of Bloomington.  After the initial flooding of the newly created lake, the high land where the cemetery and church had been was still visible and the locals began calling it Cemetery Island.  Lake Lemon has a surface area of approximately1650 acres and 24 miles of shoreline.  It was completed in 1956.
