Daniel T. Keeney was killed May 16, 1864 at Calhoun, GA having served Aug 12, 1862. A fellow-soldier and friend, who had known Keeney from boyhood, furnishes the following: he was born in Montgomery County, Indiana and he came to Iowa in 1847. He was possessed of great bodily strength, capable of enduring almost any hardships of cheerful disposition - always happy and contented; made friends of all who fell into his company; six feet high of fair complexion; his average weight 180 # his age when he enlisted, 22; enlisted at Des Moines, Aug 12, 1862; served his country faithfully through several hard campaigns; was with the regiment at Red Mound, Tenn; fought bravely was with it on garrison duty at Corinth and in the march to Tuscumbia, AL; and Lynnville, Tenn and thence to Athens, Al; on the 13th of April started on the Atlanta campaign; was with the regiment when it passed through Dalton and Tunnel Hill; but at Suger Valley on the 16th of May 1864, while we were engaged in a warm encounter with the enemy he was killed instantly by a musket-ball penetrating his forehead. He was buried in the usual manner of burying soldiers on the battlefield - wrapped in his blanket.

Note from kbz -- I'm not entirely positive as to who is his father, but Henry Keeney, one of the first doctors in our County is likely his father, brother or uncle.
