GEORGE W. DEWEY DIES ON SUNDAY IN HIS 80TH YEAR
GEORGE W. DEWEY, 80 years of age, one of the prominent
older residents of this city, died Sunday of heart
trouble at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. C. Breaks,
703 west Main street. He had been in ill health since
February.
Dr. Dewey, who for many years was one of the
well-known physicians of Montgomery County, was born near
New Richmond August 24, 1844, the son of Washington and
Elizabeth Dewey. He was married to Susan M. Alexander
March 4, 1871.
The deceased practiced medicine in this County for
over forty-five years. He was prominent in his profession
during the trying period when physicians traveled on
horseback or on foot. It was said of Dr. Dewey that he at
times walked as far as ten miles to attend a patient.
He was a member of the Christian Church and prominent
in the Masonic lodge. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. W.
C. Breaks of this city; three grandchildren, Bonnie
Beatrice Hall and Richard Dewey Breaks of Chicago and
Marshall Kenneth Breaks of Crawfordsville; one brother,
Solomon Dewey of New Richmond, and one sister, Josie
Stoddard of Chelsea, Ia., and six great
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the home of the
daughter, Mrs. W. C. Breaks, at 10 o'clock Tuesday
morning, in charge of Rev. C. L. Airhart assisted by Rev.
F. G. Howard. Interment will be made at New Richmond. It
is requested by the family that no flowers be sent.
