FRENCH, John S.

John S. French was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, July 13 (14), 1829, and was the son of Simon and Mary (Smock) French. He, with his parents came to Montgomery County, Indiana from Marion County in 1844. He spent four years at Wabash College and taught school for six years, then went to studying medicine under Dr. J.W. Straughan at Parkersburg. He completed his instruction at Rush Medical College, Chicago. He began practice at Waveland, then moved to Alamo before becoming assistant surgeon in the 120th Ind. Volunteers during the Civil War.  Returning from the Army, he again practiced at Alamo, but moved to Crawfordsville in February 1880;. His first wife was Jemima MANN of Parke County (she died leaving three children, Rebecca, David and Thomas), his second Mary STUBBINS (two children, Sarah J. and Frederick C). He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church. He died at Brownsburg, Indiana.
