Mary Holloway was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana in 1831 and died in 1923. She was the daughter of Washington and Elizabeth (King) Holloway, and was said to have been the first lady from Indiana to graduate in a medical school (Penn). On June 22, 1856, she nailed her sign up where it could be seen and thereafter had an excellent practice in obstetrics and children's diseases. She was the first to suggest and never ceased labors in the direction of the Montgomery County Orphans Home until it was established. She was also an advocate of women's rights, emphatically asserted that a woman could be a "wife, mother and have a career." The fruits of her marriage produced seven children, Edgar, Ella, Fred, Edwin, Mary E, Stanton and Bertha. The fruits of her practice produced many healthy youngsters.
