Samuel G. Irwin was born in Pennsylvania about 1825 and died at Danville, Illinois in 1907. In 1863, he graduated from Rush Medical College and held degrees from Indiana Medical College, Miami Medical College and Louisville Medical College. After his graduation in 1863, he came to Walnut Township (Mace) where he remained until the early 80's when he went to Crawfordsville. He did a large and extensive practice there for many years. He was a large man, tall and with military bearing. He always wore a cape and high hat. With his heavy head of white hair and beard, he made an impressive figure. He and his wife Mary had at least six children, and he helped several medical students, as well.
