JACKSON, W. M.
JACKSON, W. M., grocer, Waveland, was b. in Montgomery Co IN July 13, 1847 and is the son of Hugh Jackson, who was a native of SC and came to Indiana in 1835 and in 1850 removed to Iowa, where the subj. of this sketch was raised until Dec 1863 when he enlisted in Co K 33Rd Iowa, and faithfully served his country until Sept 5, 1865 when he was honorably discharged. He participated in the battles of Chickamauga, Helena, Jinkins' Ferry, Spanish Fort, and others to the amount of 14 engagements passing through them without being wounded or taken prisoner. In 1866 he marr. Miss Mary E. SMITH a native of Mont Co IN and the same year emigrated to KS where he remained 4 years, during the time when that state was infest with grasshoppers from which cause he lost what property he had and returned to Montgomery Co. a poor but wiser man. In 1878 he embarked in the grocery business in Waveland with a limited amount of means, but by a strict attention to business and honest dealings with his many customers, he has not only given general satisfaction but has increased his trade to the amount of $10,000 a year. He is a member of the Masonic and A.O.U.W (Ancient Order of United Workmen) fraternities and is a staunch Republican.
